I think that at least part of the reason all these OG champions used thin bag gloves Is that with less padding it’s easier to “feel”your own punches on the heavybag. Which in turn makes it easier to evaluate and correct your punching mechanics , while at the same time having enough protection to train with appropriate volume and frequency. I think a clear example would be knuckle allingment: big padded gloves make it difficoult to gage wether you are diong it right or not, thinner gloves will make it significantly easier.

      Thank you very much!
My first coach made me use small gloves for the heavybag work, sadly i did not keep the good habit after i changed gyn; i will make sure to correct that in the future.
I’m also hoping to get my hands on a speedbag soon , so that i can start practicing some of the training methods you showed on this Channel!

I was thinking about an old photo of Dieselnoi Chor Thanasukarn wearing thin bag mitts posing with his belt while watching this video. I asked my coach if I should punch with bag mitts and he said ABSOLUTELY! He says they teach you which part of the knuckle to hit with, strengthen your fist, and allow you to train all the parts of the hand needed to throw powerful punches consistently, safely, and with power. I'm gonna get me some today! Looks like I do know a bit of sh-poop about boxing now! Thanks Punch Professor!

People who run with their shoes on all the time, don't realize how weak their feet are until they try it barefoot. The less sole your shoes have, the better relationship you have with the CNS and foot mechanics. The thinner padding will make you be more mindful of proper hand contact. God bless!

I spent 30 years in the martial arts; I tell my kids... spend a lot of time dancing with that heavy bag... it will teach you a lot. Pivoting at the feet, torque at the hips...etc... thin gloves will condition your weapons... and teach you to properly land a punch. Great channel

The believed truth behind the Heavy bag gloves was designed for Punching accuracy and also help with technique. Not just throwing punches but rather the proper technique in Not only throwing a punch but knowing how to snap the wrist right while getting behind your punches and also helps with power punching aswel.
Understand with this type of glove is if you Punch the bag wrong you truly feel it in the wrist.
Hence why the fundamentals of the punching bag use less padding so you can improve wrist control aswel as getting the body behind the punches for more power.
All the greats named in this video were some of the greatest display of power punching in there time💯

I've used those bag gloves to hit the bag for a very long martial arts career. I like them because they make my hand feel secure, tight, and one strong unit as I squeeze the metal bar they have inside. I can also concentrate the striking force on my middle and first knuckles through the thin but sufficient layer of material. I think they also strengthen my wrist with use.

In my humble opinion, bag mitts teaches you to punch properly and develop important bio mechanical habits while punching for an extended period of time.
I always felt that you must take more responsibility and be more sensitive on how to time and grip your fists to protect your hands when using the traditional bag mitts. This also conditions your knuckles and wrists to meet the rigorous demands of the sport.

  • @toffeebear7133

Sparring gloves offer protection for the opponent, bag mitts protect your hand. You can go ham on the bag with bag mitts a lot more than with traditional gloves - better protection for knuckles. At least that is my experience

Particularly because Joe Louis is still regularly described as having the most perfect technique in boxing history by pretty much all highly experienced world class coaches.
But louis' technique doesn't seem to have been copied by anyone, despite the technique looking extremely efficient as Louis barely even moved during his fights.
And guys like Marciano never get described as having great technique to be imitated.

I love to hear the great old names come up Paul. Archie Moore I think he rates at the top. He was so knowledgeable dedicated and tough his fight against Yvon Durelle was extraordinary.
It's said by those who were around at the time, that Ray Robinson was at his very best as a light weight. I think though there is very little if any footage of Robinson to prove it, but he never fails to amaze me in any case.
One of Joe Louis' great fights was his first title defence against Tommy Farr. Farr brought his very best that night, they bruised each other up something terrible. At the end of every round they touched gloves out of mutual respect.
I think the most harrowing fight I ever saw was Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier Manilla 1975. Some things you can't forget.

But my thoughts on pad work is that it is highly useful for the pad holder, much more so than the boxer even. It trains someone to be able to read body movement and time blocks and counters to incoming shots, the perfect balance and position to do so and confidence to keep eyes wide open and in opponent Instead of flinching and looking away.
The pad holding and the concept of light technical sparring are two things that Thai boxing get right but western boxing does not.

There’s more than one reason! Have you ever seen a season pro’s fist? Hand conditioning. Teaching fighters to make a proper fist, instinctually is another reason. Though I’ve seen some use weighted gloves. It depends on what you are trying to do. Better make sure your wraps or under gloves are on point though when using thin gloves or your hands and wrists will pay the price. Little fractures can hurt your training for a while, but mess up enough and your hands will tell you when it’s going to rain!

People think that the more weight you have on you the more it encourages you to try to increase your speed so that you can become faster but actually the less weight that holds you back is actually what encourages your body to maximise and increase your speed. Hence why fighters used lighter gloves for the bag. With more speed comes more power and snap.

IMO bag mitts are to not necessarily build power but to force you to make a proper first and have proper punching technique. Its easy to lose technique when you only hit the heavy bag with 16-18oz because the padding in the wrist allows you to get away with throwing a punch where you had your wrist bent or allowing you to keep your hand open a little when you hit the bag because the sound of the padding of the 16oz gloves hitting the bag makes it seem like it was a solid punch but when you get into your pro or amateur fight the 10oz or 8oz gloves wont allow you to makes those mistakes or else you could break or hurt your hands. The mitts are a great addition to add into the routine if you feel that maybe you're not throwing correctly and want to sharpen up and to condition your knuckles so that they're ready for when you have to wear the small competition gloves.

The gloves were much better in those Old School Days. On the hands, not the opponents eyes !

Wraps protect the assets (hands) !
Precision Punching protects the assets (hands)*

Hello Punch Professor. Whats your opinion on jogging? Is it really a must in boxing or was it just an old school tradition that just got carried down? Are boxers better off using the time for jogging doing something else such as more specific training or more recovery time? Thank you

      Trollstation123 * * * * * A little off topic but a very good question *
Jogging/running is very valuable, but if a fighter jogs or runs too much they become a distant runner and no longer a boxer !
Implementation is wise, but to give up on the proven benefits of running/Jogging is unwise*
Sprints, stairs and other cardio exercises are a welcomed addition to the mix. Can I say how much mix should be mixed = no because it depends on the athlete, and his team, and their plans ...
I record times over distance, but not always, in order to
measure where the fighter is at in terms of endurance..
I compare their time against their time in past fight preparations?
      I hope you follow me.
I will have to keep it short. but will add that long distance 3 miles maybe 5 once in a while 10 is where a fighter will find his second wind ..
It also gives the boxer faith in his conditioning, which when push comes to shove, and they have to dig very deep, they know they can find what they are looking for*
Hope you know what I am talking about?

Thanks to smaller bag gloves you get greater feedback on your punches, you can make a correct fist while punching, it promotes correct punching form especially landing with the index & middle finger knuckles. It also helps with hand conditioning, when you can punch correctly in those small bag gloves and not hurt your hand, fight gloves will feel so protective in comparison; remember these fighters fought every month, sometimes multiple times a month and did you hear of many of the greats having hand injuries? Nope. All of these things add up to that, this is why they're so beneficial when utilised correctly.

With thinner gloves you just can't, you must have a proper form when punching, otherwise you'll injure yourself. • @richardsmith70
      @richardsmith70 4 года назад +2

So I find the answer is to toughen your fist followed by correct form as I use a 72kg bag to increase power also use resistant bands on heavy bag so power and speed increases

In MMA his movement is countered by leg kicks so it seems to me that in the sport of boxing it would gain a huge advantage.

Their main focus/study, was punching with precision...
It was about precision/accuracy more than anything.
Pin Pointing a knuckle on a pimple, rather than a 16 ounce sparring glove on 100 pound punching bag.
The study of precision is so important in Punching.
