I used the product you recommended (as Amazon reviews tend to contradict each other) and this saved my guitar. I switched over to a tube amp recently and my guitar was picking up radio stations and tons of interference. While my results were not as drastic as yours, there is a noticeable reduction in the noise and it's playable now. Going to borrow a multimeter to see if there are any spots I can improve. Thank you for the great video!
Shielding works wonders, so glad I did it on my Tele. The only thing that I did different was I didn’t solder wires to each cavity to connect them, instead I ran one continues small wire and removed the insulation where it ran into each cavity and placed the copper tape over it. To me it was cleaner and as long as the tape has conductive adhesive then everything will joined together and grounded (as it were).
I just did this to a Fender classic 50's player 50's Strat MIM. I was amazed at how little shielding there was in this guitar (vintage spec?)! After fully shielding there is a noticeable reduction in noise. Fairly simple upgrade. It has now become my "project" strat. New P/Us and any other mods I can think of.
Amazing video. Just one question, once you’ve created a faraday cage, you still need the ground wire that touches bridge and is soldered to pot? Many thanks
Great video...beautiful playing. Are your wires from pickups to control cavity shielded cables? If not what do you think about covering the with a top layer of copper tape.many have said unshielded hookup wire over an inch is a source for RF interference. From what I have reade is fender uses unshielded wire. Thoughts?
The cheapest copper tape I've found is slug tape, with conductive adhesive, from the garden centre. It's identical to more expensive tape. That said, I prefer to shield with aluminium foil, because to me, copper seems to alter the guitar's tone.
did something silimilar *(first time) and getting buzzing when touching the pickup poles. *(i know don't touch the pickups) is this a ground loop? all wires are correct. *double checked.
Real nice job shielded all the routed areas and bonding them all together. Quick question. Doesn’t the bridge plate have to be bonded to the shielding also? Or does that get bonded to the controls?
Yes my bridge plate is touching the copper tape, so yes the bridge-plate is grounded. You can see in the video when Don touches the control plate and the bridge-plate there is a connection.
All of the active guitar and bass pickups EMG makes require a battery; the Select models are passive and don't need one. The active pre-amp, located in the pickup housing, is powered by this battery.
I got a EMG pick up from a friend I want to put it in the guitar I'm working on, he said it had a battery hooked up to it, do I need to hook a battery up to it also?????
@@rainypath96 Noise gate? No chance! Properly shielded guitars, decent quality cables, and get rid of any pedals that raise the noise floor unacceptably. You'll sound better, and people will see you as a better musician.
@notexpatjoe It doesn't matter what they call it as long as it works, and everyone understands the intent. Like the tremolo arm on your guitar, for instance.
It’s actually not a faraday cage. I only know that because I just watched a whole video about how it isn’t 😁. One of the reasons is that the pickups protrude from the guitar body and aren’t shielded. A faraday cage has to encapsulate all the electronics. There’s more to it than that, though.
For those that don’t know it- Dale Clark makes the very best telecaster hardware in the world- his saddles, neck plates, and bridges are the absolute best - so are the milled jack cups .killer player too

I never thought to solder the separate cavities together straight onto the copper tape! Brilliant :) Can't wait to shield my noisy guitars!

Lovely guitarist!

This way works great for me no need to change anything.

The correct way? That would be much easier to be clear about if there had been explanatory dialog.
I will try to make it more clear next time.
You making a Faraday cage.
lmao for real. just use a noise gate?
