The fact is than you have just one culture and it's not possible to know perfectly the others so you can learn different things from another cultures BUT you never will be an expert. Maybe it wasn’t her intention to mock the culture but I think Hawaiians have every right to be upset to find their (dying) culture inaccurately represented. Because she’s not the only one. It’s just a party theme to a lot of people around the world and people forget it’s a real culture with real people. I’ve gone to parties in the mainland US and the whole time I got served on a silver platter. But they had no actual interest in the culture itself. And that’s what upsets people. I think she did great. All this negativity is sad. She was nervous which was probably why she did the dance so fast but her arms were at the right speed. Give her a break.
I've watched this video a few times and every time the comments depress me. If you're offended by this try and keep and open mind and realize all the factors that went into her dancing how she did and maybe don't go all out WWIII on her. Believe it or not but helping people by kindly guiding them in the right direction is more effective than screaming.

@@kianabm2268 I think they're talking about the dancing, not the song. Our kumu Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu composed, performed and choreographed the animated dance you see in Lilo and Stitch. It is wonderful to see how many young folks have learned it. It is a beautiful and very traditional chant to King Kalakaua in a new setting. Every halau has a different styling and I find it very interesting to see how they all preserve the important meaning in the words of the chant even if the interpretation is a bit different.

I love my Polynesian side. Hula is such a beautiful cultural dance. Living in Deep South Virginia I can't get to any real instructors. So RUclips is all I have to learn from. I wish more natural born Polynesians would be more accommodating to those of us not as close to the mother islands, but still want to connect to them through dance. I love how gracefully she danced the piece. It didn't look like she was in front of a panel of traditional judges for points. She was just sharing a cultural piece at a talent show.
I can only say that this is not a sensual song, and I felt a lot of sensuality here, she should've danced slower, she had grace, but at the same time she missed the point of the song, calmness, happiness, peace.
She's good but I think she should learn how to control herself with her motions, in hula you gotta know what you're doing and what you're trying to show in your story. If she could learn from a kumu hula I think she would be great! I think she should just learn control and more grace in her motions though :) -(coming from a hula dancer)
Nice dance I juss wish she was more gracefull like a real hula dancer is ;like a person who's been dancing hula for along time ! butt it's okay!too stiff for my eyes I've seen better movement !
This is the best video of He Mele No Lilo that I've seen so far. You dance gracefully and let your body and hand gestures go with flow of the song. I guess this is what my PE teacher talks about "letting your emotions flow through movements" and not just to "impress your audience with your dance skills." You should probably do a step by step tutorial. You're an awesome dancer. ;)
"just need a little better dancer" what???? were you not watching her dance???? this was amazing, idk how much better it could get...I really want to learn how to dance this though, please post a how to video!! you dance like a Hawaiian Goddess
That was amazing. Very accurate and well done. I'm not a dancer, but this is the one dance I'd like to be able to do. Could you please make a tutorial or how-to video?
this dance is supposed to be slower props for probably being from the main land and trying to dance it the best you can but you danced to bouncy and too quickly the song talks about the volcanoes/mountains and you missed the correct motions for that. good effort at least.
(I don't know anything about the culture, so this isn't meant to be insulting) Is there room for artistic license in hula, or is everything always uniform? I get that she's sloppy with her movements and needs to reflect the tone of the song, but can hula be stylized?
from what I've known, Hula is supposed to tell a story. People are not gonna understand a story you tell if you 'stylize' your words, otherwise it's just gibberish, right? Hula can work along those same lines sometimes.

"He Mele no Lilo" is the movie version of "He mele no Kalakaua", a song written for David Kalakaua, a very importan monarch. The hands have the meaning of the song, The song has beautiful meanigs and she doesn't respect them. The technique is very important, but the meaning is more importan than the technique, because is the reflect of an ancestral culture.

Why are Great Performances like this rare to find on RUclips compared to the one we love the most in the movie, no seriously it's hard to find good performances based off the movie
I truly ❤️ your dance !!! Can I use it to dance this song ? Of course I will put the link of your video (this video) in the description !!! 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️☺️❤️🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
I give her credit for trying. But she needs to learn the value of the culture, know story that its telling, and the meaning behind it all. But good job for trying.
Torran Agpaoa how do you know she doesn't? The was she watches her hands as she dances, does her curtsies, etc. shows that she knows many of the most crucial aspects of a properly learned hula dance. She also lives in Washington State, so it wouldn't be a stretch to believe there is a legitimate hula school in the area.
HeartSongPony i understand where your coming from. I understand that many different halus tech differently why not you look on RUclips for our famous merri monarch festival. It is the biggest hula competition in the world. you can see how the dancers perform and it is very moving, very beautiful for the dresses, or Malo's they wear.
I give her props she did pretty good. She should definitely learn from a kumu. People who get offended by the people who are offended by this just don’t get it and are also themselves being insensitive. How would you feel if you sacred land is taken from your people and now your sacred traditions are being taken because it looks “cute”? Hula is sacred, almost like religion. The dance is an interpretation of the song and so its important to at least have an understanding of the song even if you don’t necessarily speak Hawaiian. Some of these songs are almost like prayers, it talks about their gods, the land, it’s people etc. I’m not going to hate on this person and give her the benefit of the doubt that she simply didn’t know any better. The fact that people are commenting that the people who are offended “shouldn’t take it so seriously” is just evidence of that colonial mentality ingrained in people. Imagine if someone took an American flag and used it as a bathroom rug, because it looked nice and has a smooth texture to rest your feet on while you shit. Wouldn’t people get offended? And how much more offended would they be if others tell them not to take it so seriously? No big deal, it’s just cloth right? No, it’s what it represents. What’s the big deal, it’s just a dance? NO, IT’S WHAT IT REPRESENTS.
ruclips.net/video/3OYkYFFIvHk/видео.html compare just remember she was by herself too. I think she did a good job by herself also maybe she had a time limit so she had to speed it up a bit. The speed of the song matches the dance she is doing.
hula is about what's on the inside, not the outside, say you're in love with a boy you tell a love story with your body, if you'd like to draw the attention of people watching tell them a story hula is about telling the story with your body no matter what your race
her steps are all wrong. she's doing a hella wrong, shes crossing her feet. thats not how u do a ka'o. dont move ur shoulders. bend more. dont take this the wrong way, but u really need to practice REAL hula. to me its insulting. but good job!
That could be the problem. Lilo and Stitch is not the most accurate depiction of Polynesian culture. It's a bit watered down and white washed. If you want to see what the dances are really like you should look up Merri Monarch. It's the biggest Hula competition and very traditional.
i mean they probably are hawaiians who dances so they would most likely do it better than her as shes not even doing the hula probably 🤷🏾♀️but ion rlly care if she did the dance wrong, since its not my culture and i dont really know anything about hawaiian culture
Yeet lmfao E ʻaʻole iā ʻoe ʻike i nā painu ma kō waha aku. This repetition was a joke, but her effort was commendable. Hula is a very sacred practice and people should look for authentic sources to learn from. It’s not just a dance, it’s a ritual, a way of worshipping and honoring gods and royalty-which this particular song, He Mele no Lilo “A song for Lilo” talks about 2 honorary royalty and is a commendation to them. Sorry if you’re ignorance blocks you from realizing that we aren’t being petty, but trying to educate people about our culture and to protect its reverence.
Connor_the_fag yeah, kinda sad everyones saying "the hawaiians are being so over sensitive." or something along the lines of that . like bro, yous have to understand they have a right to be mad after everything thats happen to them. personally it doesnt have that much effecttt on me since im maori not hawaiian and i dont really know anything about hawaiian culture.

Hey! You did an amazing job!! Just remeber to relax your arm movements and your hip sways make them like the ocean! But I'm so proud that you took up a new type of dance!!! You did great love!!! ♥️♥️♥️😃😃
she's my Idol now
Honestly, i love this version. It's fun to watch. It's beautiful in my eyes.
So beautiful, you did a great job!
...In all honesty, this is the best I've seen so far while browsing the web. It felt fluid, much like waves moving on the ocean. Which is, in my opinion, where the beauty of this dance shines the most.
I watched the lilo and stitch movies 🎥 but I also like watching people do the dancing 💃 from the movie 🎥
i love this dance! would it be ok if i used it for a heritage on stage performance? i would love to use it to exhibit some beautiful Hawaiian culture =)
Wow this is absolutely beautiful!
it's not the most accurate one but it is the most beautiful one
it was alright, but it's easy to tell she wasn't taught the proper form and hand gestures of hula
Nadie latino?
i hope you all know, that this dance was choreographed by mark ho’omalu, who is known to have a unique hula technique.
I like it very much. Very beautiful dance. Very beautiful culture. I would like to learn to dance this. Thanks for the video. Greetings from Chile :)
ehhhh shile :D
Why do you think she's white? she definitely doesn't look it. And why does it matter? Anyone can do hula.
Well all I need now is stitch and a hawaain dress thing and I should be good

Is... Is this what love feels like?!
IN LOVE WITH THIS DANCE FORM
Looks more like an Indian Bollywood dance... Just a costume and song change, then she's perfect.. XD Thumbs upped.
Her movements are so soft, it is really comforting to watch this dance❤️
well at last she knows the hand movements for ka mauna kapu much better than those who hula dance they just god zapped
Mia Marley Rangel Flores You just said almost exactly what a top comment said lol. I'm guessing that motion is important? Which part is it please~?
Yass girl!!! that was amazing 😍
Why are Great Performances like this rare to find on RUclips compared to the one we love the most in the movie, no seriously it's hard to find good performances based off the movie
OMG That's So Beautiful, I Love you!!!
Well I like this dances
It looks like from the movie
From Disney lilo and stitch
Hermosa Danza....Saludos desde Venezuela...
Beautiful Dance .... Greetings from Venezuela ...
Este video me encanto !!! Desearía poder bailar como ella !!! :D .. Muy bueno .. Te felicito !! :D
I truly ❤️ your dance !!! Can I use it to dance this song ? Of course I will put the link of your video (this video) in the description !!! 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️☺️❤️🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
¡Super bonito!, me quedé con muchas ganas de bailar esta canción, algún día volveré a bailar. Polinesio y belly dance rifan ♡
Torran Agpaoa fuvk up u horse eater
2017 why not you shut the fuck up
Torran Agpaoa oh okay I'd like to see you do it better than her
I watched this video few times; very graceful and smooth. Excellent performance.
Watching From The Philippines!! 🇵🇭
Mahalo ❤❤❤
Love this sooo much!!!
I love ! It's beautiful !!!
ruclips.net/video/3OYkYFFIvHk/видео.html compare just remember she was by herself too. I think she did a good job by herself also maybe she had a time limit so she had to speed it up a bit. The speed of the song matches the dance she is doing.
Hula is such an elegant dance style.
me gusta la cancion y la forma en que la bailan
hula is about what's on the inside, not the outside, say you're in love with a boy you tell a love story with your body, if you'd like to draw the attention of people watching tell them a story hula is about telling the story with your body no matter what your race
Hermoso baile 🥰❤
I fucking love this!!!! Watch it every day!
She dances so beautiful I love this
She is very elegant and moves with confidence and grace. She did a wonderful job.
Beautiful song, beautiful dancer, beautiful dance!!
SWAY DEM HIPS
she's so beautiful
omg literally crying while watching this... its so beautiful!! and so graceful ! :''''''''D
her steps are all wrong. she's doing a hella wrong, shes crossing her feet. thats not how u do a ka'o. dont move ur shoulders. bend more. dont take this the wrong way, but u really need to practice REAL hula. to me its insulting. but good job!
She was imitating the dance from the movie, it wasn't meant to be exact Hula.
That could be the problem. Lilo and Stitch is not the most accurate depiction of Polynesian culture. It's a bit watered down and white washed. If you want to see what the dances are really like you should look up Merri Monarch. It's the biggest Hula competition and very traditional.
"to me it's insulting. but good job". disingenuous much?
Sicka Um, you're insulting me.
ITS FROM A FUCKING DISNEY MOVIE CHILL THE fuckk OUT EVERYONE
So great!
Definitely going to do this dance for my senior project!
I like how people are criticizing her when they know damn well that they can't do it as good as her
Yeet bet lol
i mean they probably are hawaiians who dances so they would most likely do it better than her as shes not even doing the hula probably 🤷🏾♀️but ion rlly care if she did the dance wrong, since its not my culture and i dont really know anything about hawaiian culture
but they have a right to be upset when theyre whole culture is americanised and taken from them so
Yeet lmfao E ʻaʻole iā ʻoe ʻike i nā painu ma kō waha aku.
Really beautiful!
