  • I tried to count how many kills Joel has in the HBO show The Last of Us vs in the game The Last of Us Part I. I compare the two and bring up a few differences among their stories, which for the most part are pretty similar. What did you think of season 1 of this show?
I usually post video game challenge videos and have done a few for TLOU series as well as Uncharted and Call of Duty. Check out my most recent which was a TLOU2 no damage run: • Can You Beat The Last ...

and joel arguably isn't a villain in that ending... REMEMBER, TLOU1s ending and 'cure' was left ambiguous or your own interpretation but in TLOU2, Neil Cuckman wanted to paint joel as a whole evil villain when the cure was going to 100% work even though TLOU1 never suggested this... the fireflies from the 1st game where going to kill a 14 year old girl with no consent in that matter to give out a cure even though that would be impossible even if the cure did work but now in TLOU2 the cure wouldve 100% worked and how this genius of a scientist wouldve gotten a cure within HOURS even with barely any resources and knowledge on it.... abbys father is a d3mbf3ck and I love how the 2nd game wanted to picture him as a suck kind and caring person by saving a zebra even though he was going to kill a girl who gave no consent to it but even if she was awake and gave 'consent' she can't do that because she's just a 'child' and there could be more solutions to it with time but the 'fireflies' aren't good people
side note: I love how abbys father transformed his clothes from 'green' to 'blue' especially how his room went from 'dirty' to 'clean'... Neil Cuckman is a living form of a paragon

As I played the games in 2013, I didn't think much of him being in his 50s.. But as I'm now in my 30s, there's no way I would have Joels strenth and stamina in 20 years. I'm glad that the adaption didn't make him an unstopable old hulk. I was a bit concerned that they weren't going to make him brutal, but it makes sense that they were leading up to the bloodbath in episode 9.. If he was killing countless men each episode it wouldn't have that punch at the end.

    • @squirlmy
      @squirlmy Год назад +55

ha, as someone in his 50s, and not a gamer, I think of these in even more extreme terms. Anything anywhere close to the game would have been over-the-top cartoonish in the series. A handful of deadly encounters in wartime, irl, will get you a well-deserved medal. A videogame is an entirely different thing. I think during the game, many players got extra feels after adrenaline jolts during gaming phases, and will complain they don't get the same impact from the series. That's because while sitting on a couch passively watching, the video game action would just look laughable. As we old timers might say, like a Saturday morning cartoon.

Well if you were forced into hard labor, hikes for miles, ect, you would gain some strength and stamina. Definitely not nearly as much as in a game, but you'd be surprised with what the human body can adapt to. Plus it's important to note that he had a laborious job before.

    • @traviscue2099
      @traviscue2099 Год назад +31

Joel's likely taken a lot of damage over the years, as you age it catches up with you... and without access to medical assistance bruises and fractures/bumps ect would turn into a struggle and pain.. but he's a video game character..I gotta give Leeway to that..
But think crouching on your knees/climbing up objects/swimming.. the basics. The vast majority of 50 year old men aren't going to finish this journey 😅

I feel alot of people in the comments think that the show is more grounded because of this and that the game has a bunch of NPCs to kill just for gameplay but its also a plot point. Its remarked on many times in the game about how Joel kills an unusual amount of people and that he has remarkable skills that everyone else doesnt. NPCs are scared of him and confused by lines like "there better have been an army in that truck" "the others were slaughtered by a crazy man" and "your friend killed how many people?" Along with "The others are dead, some f*ckin tourist took them out" "how the hell did they manage to take them all out" and Ellies line of "at least theyre scared of us". I feel they could have easily incorporated Joels brutality and intimidation into the show by ackowledging how odd it is he's so skilled and having his actions back it up.

But the game, they actually pulled at the heartstrings constantly with all of the betrayal to the small lines thrown in here and there, throughout scenic views mostly.
One of my favorite parts being that they were walking through the museum and having a good father to daughter time within the game.
Another reason why I don’t like the show version is that they have protagonist health - OP view such as when Joel is straight back to fighting even with a deep internal wound unlike Joel from the game who takes a while to recover.

To add to that, game Ellie killed like four times more people than Joel did in the Firefly Lab. This makes their last exchange in the game and in the show leave a different impact.

Joel was so brutal in the game, and such a bigger badass. However, they can only do so much in the show. Albeit, I see more kills in Resident Evil and other apocalypse shows/media, then I do in this show. So compared to most, this shows action is incredibly tame

That’s kind of crazy cause on my latest play through, I finished with more or less a thousand kills but that’s cause I went on normal difficulty and did a kill everything play through. the body count gets crazy when you get multi kills on some segments that have infinite infected respawning. There’s one in bills town when you first meet him and another one right before you enter the high school basement.

Awesome breakdown sir, it inspired me to do my own kill count where I went all out and got every kill I could in the game. Here's my breakdown.
Throughout the game my count is as follows.
    Joel: 193 Infected kills
    119 runners
    51 clickers
    17 stalkers
    6 bloaters
255 (insane numbers here) Human kills
    15 smugglers
    27 fedra soldiers
    123 Pittsburgh hunters
    28 bandits (tommy's dam chapters)
    33 cannibals
    26 fireflies (including Marlene)
    3 doctors (yep...)
Ellie: 68 infected kills (includes gameplay kills where she got a couple with takedowns)
    38 runners
    25 clickers
    4 stalkers
    1 bloater
    62 humans kills
3 Pittsburgh hunters (1 in the cutscene and 2 where she sniped them in the plaza)
    59 cannibals
I'm confident I got every kill I could here and even went out my way at some points like where Ellie's getting chased by the cannibals you can go back and shoot the two who come after her.
Also this was done on grounded. Safe to say the game went a bit overboard with the violence and I can understand why the show toned it back a bit for realisms sake.

Well, the answer to "who's more deadly" it's pretty obvious to me. In the videogame, when other groups or enemies encounter the aftermath of Joel's actions, they often assume that it was the result of a confrontation between two rival groups rather than the work of a single individual.
Joel in the game is literally a one man army.
P.S: I edited the comment to make my point clearer

I think that the taming down of the violence makes sense. It's better to only kill when you have to in scenarios where bullets and people might be limited. Also the show focuses a lot on the story, and doesn't have to include gameplay segments. While it is sad that the show had to cut some content, the new content it added much makes up for it.

Gameplay shows how brutal of a person Joel actually is. In the game there are moments where you fight where Ellie comments how brutal Joel is.
And the show cuts out the part of the game where Joel teaches Ellie how to shoot a rifle and Ellie protects Joel while he clears out an area. That moment was a personal moment of Joel teaching Ellie to defend herself and others and they totally cut it out.

  • @thecowboy9698
    @thecowboy9698 Год назад +6

I was surprised by how much they toned down the combat skills of Joel in the show. In the game, he was like Liam Neeson's character Bryan Mills from the movie Taken. Incidently, based on the Taken trilogy, I think Liam Neeson would've made an excellent Joel. And I'm frankly a little surprised that apparently nobody approached him for the role.
But I guess it makes sense they toned down Joel's character in the show, given that in the show he's 56 years old, and while he certainly isn't a pansy by any means, a 56 year old man isn't gonna have the same physical capability and resilience he did when younger. Age catches up with everyone.
What I did think was a mistake on the part of the show is it rushed through the first season. They should've stretched it over two seasons, I think.

I guess the main reason why in the show he isn’t as deadly is because it doesn’t make sense why a construction worker suddenly becomes John Wick. I think they should’ve hinted more at Tommy and Joel leaving special forces or navy seals or something before getting into construction work, I know they said Tommy done tours with the army but at least then they could’ve been more badass. It doesn’t make much sense in the show that Joel is shown being more vulnerable but still manages to wipe out all the fireflies at the end.

20 years of pure violence as he is well known by the fireflies and other groups, make it pretty obvious on why and how he is so good at killing. Especially since he wasnt and isn't a good guy.
that was pretty clear in the game.
Kinda like Rick or Daryl in the walking dead. They had some skills prior to the outbreak, but it's experience during the apocalypse that made them killing machines.
Just like negan or the little abused woman. Even Michonne.

You don’t need military training mandatorily in order to become deadly. Joel has gained experience over 20 years on top of having an innate ability towards surviving any situation. There’s a lot of criminals and war survivors out there that have developed these skills by simply doing it.

Well, in the show they showed in the ep. 1. In Joel's car, he has a fading sticker sticker that say's "Operation Desert Storm Combat Veteran". And it probably means that he has seen a combat during the Operation (he's probably in a tank, probably a driver or some sort). It can added that he knows how to handle a certain situation in combat. And it doesn't mean becoming a former navy seals or whatever, will not make you become John Wick or badass lol. Come on man, HE'S ONLY HUMAN with a 20 years of experience in the apocalypse. Choosing not to fight the other infected or human and just try to run away is one of the best idea. And if Joel is more badass, I don't think thay he will survive for 2 damn decades in the apocalypse.
