  • So... my horn has some mechanical things that need addressing and it's going to take a couple of weeks to get them sorted. My repairman has a few VIs for me to try out and keep one while he fixes my horn. Can I survive without my ol' faithful? Will I end up buying another Mark VI? Will it be a back up or while my horn become the back up? Come with me on the journey to parts unknown lol.

    Your silver horn is still my favorite. Don't think you can find one as nice as yours no matter how many you try. Some of the really early mark six horns were very nice. You can feel the difference in the body shape when you play them. It's like a fatter feel in your hands. I think those early mark six horns used a different mold. The metal was probably a different blend also. I over hauled one that my friend owned and loved the dark rich tone when I played it. Never found one or played one since. Did the overhaul in the 80's when I was teaching school.

    • @StantawnKendrick
      @StantawnKendrick  Год назад

      Yeah man VIs vary depending on a lot of things. I’ve played early ones mid ones and later ones. I guess it comes down to the metal, the care over the years too. Some the more they were played the better. So that can vary too. My silver horn has been through some things before I got it. But it still us a beast of a horn and has stood up to any horn I’ve tested. So I know it’s the horn for me

    Loved watching this- I’m nowhere near where you are at because I’m a beginner but I did spend 2 months researching which horn I wanted to upgrade to from an old horn that I was given, and I then picked 6 horns to blind test with my tutor. It was an amazing experience trying to decide, but in the end a horn picked me I think 🤔 loved your Vlog. Waving from the other side of the pond 🇬🇧 🙏

      @@StantawnKendrick Really appreciate how careful you are about considering all the angles and not jumping for the first WOW horn or mouthpiece. That’s sound advice. If you eventually want a backup VI or SBA and have the time and/or money, a trip to NYC (like KIm Bock’s shop) is a real eye opener! He probably has 15 tenors at any time ranging from BAs, SBAs, and 5-6 digit MK VIs - he makes amazing necks too!

    New subscriber.. this is fun. I watched your first video just finished your second and looking forward to your third. My ear goes to the unlacquered tenor. The lows on that horn are awesome and you bring the out very well. Also it has the vintage tenor sound. When you were playing through the harmonics of the horn, fantastic. So my vote goes to the unlaquered horn. BTW you got a great sound and play that sax very well.

    Not to muddy the waters of your decision, but the 121k sounds better on this side of the camera. The low end is more lush, but it's up to you. Which one makes you want to play more?

    I like this mouthpiece better than the one in the first Mark VI video. Seems to bring out more of the complexity and character of the vintage horns. The other mouthpiece has a purer, cleaner sound, if that makes any sense. That 140K sounds a lot better in this video with that piece! I think a 1960s Otto Link would really sound great on those horns. But those cost as much as some horns.

    The funny thing is that I think your backup soloist sort of smooths out the 121k. It seems as if your two mouthpieces have opposite effects on the two horns. I couldn't really tell you which horn I prefer, overall, but I think you sound more "you" on the 121k.

    • @StantawnKendrick

    • @StantawnKendrick
      @StantawnKendrick  3 года назад

      well... Selmer changed a few things that people seem to not enjoy. I can speak for myself. I have played a MK7 and I didn't like it very much. Mostly because of the neck. They changed the angle of it and it's uncomfortable to me. Never could get the strap high or low enough to feel right. Not to mention the key work change on them.
