  • NOTE: SPOILERS IN DESCRIPTION
BTW OWIA means "One to Win It All", a rough translation of the Chinese name, "一決雌雄"
    Background:
Sitting on the most southwest corner of the Glasgow City Council area is the Glasgow suburb of Parkhouse. However, even being at the corner of the Glasgow City area, Parkhouse is served by two main public transport modes to the city centre: Scotrail on the Glasgow Southwestern Line and First Bus Glasgow route 57. On the Scotrail side, trains operate from the closest station, Nitshill, every 30 minutes, with a quick 15-20 minute ride into the city centre. First Glasgow serves the area of Parkhouse with a more frequent service, route 57, which operates every 15 minutes. However, route 57 winds its way through many other communities and suburbs before heading reaching Glasgow City Centre, meaning its journey time is appalingly long. However, taking route 57 the other way reaches Silverburn, which provides a connection to First Glasgow route X8, an express bus route into the city centre. On the other end of the this particular race, the University of Glasgow is in the West End of Glasgow, not in the City Centre, which means an extra segment was needed for both modes of transport. The cheapest method from the city centre to the University is the Glasgow Subway, which was the second segement of the Scotrail route. Since a Firstday Bus Ticket would be needed anyway on the First Glasgow route, it would be natural to continue proceeding to the University of Glasgow with First Bus, of which in this case, was First Glasgow route 2, having the fastest and closest connection to route X8.
    Details:
    Date: 21/9/2020
    Starting Time: 14:10
Starting Point: Parkhouse Roundabout on Whitriggs Road
Finish Point: Outside of Boyd Orr Building, University of Glasgow on University Avenue
    Speed of Timelapse: x12
    Equipment:
First Glasgow: GoPro Hero 7 Black, 1080p60 (Whee)
    Scotrail/Glasgow Subway: Apeman A77, 1080p60 (The_Mediocre_Engineer)
    Results:
    First Glasgow: 1hrs 07min 48sec
    Scotrail/Glasgow Subway: 59min 10sec
This means Scotrail/Glasgow Subway was faster than First Glasgow by 8min 38sec
    Traffic and smoothness of journey:
    First Glasgow: Smooth
    Scotrail/Glasgow Subway: Smooth
Points to note on the First Glasgow portion:
-First Glasgow route 2 arrived very quickly, although it had to stop for an extended period at Elderslie Street as a timing point, and Kelvingrove Art Musuem because the ticket machine jammed. This would've added approximately 2 minutes to the total journey time
-Route 57 was a couple minutes late into Parkhouse, but since there would've been a wait for route X8 at Silverburn anyway, this wouldn't have affected the overall journey time
-At this time, the arrival time of route 57 at Silverburn is exactly the same as the departure time of route X8. This means passengers wanting to use this method would be forced to wait at Silverburn for 15 minutes. On this particular day, the bus running route 57 behind the bus in this test arrived at Silverburn at 1441, before of the departure time of 1442 of route X8 from Silverburn. However, with these schedules, that would be cutting it too close for comfort, meaning that during this test as well, the testing officer opted to take the earlier bus on route 57, and wait for 15 minutes at Silverburn.
Points to note on the Scotrail/Glasgow Subway portion:
-There were some hiccups during filming, which were blacked out during editing. However, the camera did not stop rolling.
-The_Mediocre_Engineer had to tie a shoelace at Glasgow Central. The duration of this was less than the average duration for the Glasgow Subway, meaning that this shouldn't have affected the total journey time.

Leaving later for a bus slightly better bus connections. Would make the bus quicker

This was not possible due to the schedules in place by First Bus. For the Silverburn Connection, the next 57 was due to arrive at the exact same time the X8 was due to leave, meaning if the 57 was late, or even on time, it would miss the connection for X8. This is why the decision was made to take the earlier 57, 15 minutes earlier, to secure a connection on the X8, which would be what a normal commuter would opt for.

On the subway journey I think you’d be a little quicker leaving Glasgow Central station from the Heilanman’s umbrella exit and walk up Argyle Street rather than walk through the station and down Union Street.

Walking through Heilanman's Umbrella would have definitely been quicker. However, I was not the testing officer for the train+subway portion, and the testing officer for this portion was instructed to take a route which they felt was most familiar to them and the safest, such why walking down Union Street was chosen. In this particular example, it's likely this would have made no effect on the final outcome, as the Subway train arrived right away, meaning even if a minute was saved on walking through Heilanman's Umbrella, it would have been spent on the platforms at St.Enoch
