  • Check out the total makeover I did on this really beat up, trashed out thrift store dresser I bought a couple of weeks back! I smoothed it back out, painted the body "UFO" gray and the drawers white, and I left some wood details for contrast. It turned out pretty cool!

    Really sweet of you to acknowledge the people who would rather keep pieces like this in original finish but to be honest we have gotten to the point where everyone thinks they have a right to critique you and almost like shaming you into doing what they want. I do not agree with that. You can do what you want with your time, money and skills and you shouldnt have to justify it. That rant finished, I really loved the project and I definitily enjoy seeing your transformations. I wish i had your skills. 😊

      I think most furniture enthusiasts are fine with destroying pieces that have no value but if the goal is to make money then you have to do some basic research and when you stumble onto a piece with potential it probably should be saved or sold to someone who will. There's more than enough crap furniture out there to play with.

    Hi. Your dresser came out fantastic. Really pretty. As far as the knobs, they look really good the way the have an antique touch to them, it looks better with the dark in them. Thank you for your inspirational videos. I want to make an island from a dresser😳.

    • @MrDiyDork
      @MrDiyDork  6 лет назад

      Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I agree on the knobs. If they ended up all shiny and new, they might have looked a little out of place.

      Hey! I recently turned a craigslist dresser into a kitchen Island. I think it turned out pretty cute. I kind of did a similar paint/stain finish to it as this video. Outside I did in white paint and stained the drawer fronts. Added a custom counter top from Home Depot. Not too pricey.

    • @MrDiyDork
      @MrDiyDork  6 лет назад

      Well, the original idea was to keep it simple with wood drawers and a white body. But after sanding the drawer faces too much, I had to fix the screw up, so my wife suggested doing a matching pattern on the drawer edges to cover it up. I did that on another dresser for the same reason, so I figured it would work well on this one too.

    Salt and vinegar ( + flour to make a paste) works to clean brass as well. I refinished a mid century dresser with brass feet and it was a pain to get the tarnish and dirt off. Some I was able to clean with Brasso, some cleaned up better with the salt vinegar mixture. I just soaked them in a bowl with the S/V mix. Your dresser turned out nice! Sometimes when its too beat up, bondo and paint is the way to go...Adding color on an old piece gives it a new life!

    • @MrDiyDork
      @MrDiyDork  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the salt/vinegar tip! I'll have to try that next time. The Brasso seemed to take forever this time.

    Nice job but I'm just wondering have you ever wood plane and see how long it takes for you to finish instead of sanding I believe it would cut down on the time because you wouldn't have to switch grits and so on also you said this project was the heaviest you had how do you move you're projects since ur the only one moving them

    • @MrDiyDork
      @MrDiyDork  6 лет назад

      I don't have a planer, but it's one of those tools I've been considering. Most dressers I can wrangle around with the right grip after taking the drawers out. On this one, it was still too heavy even without the drawers, so I had to use some rollers I built to move it around and slide it out the door to work on it. Then, when it was time to bring it in, I had my wife help me carry it back in. We're not looking forward to carrying it upstairs though!

    Wow I have just found you and had to subsribe. I have an old veneer dresser with only draws and the base ok but on the sliding door front the veneer fallen off. So I am thinking to paint only the draws and the top leave the wood as is. Not sure what kind of wood is so I guess I have to try and error see what is sticking to it but for design you gave me some pretty good ideas. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to learning from you. My only drawback is here in Australia the paints are different so I have to find and match somehow the brands.
