Yeah, the asat sound was, cosidered to what he said himself, the sound he liked the most. Also, his playing was techniqually the best on the slightly smaller frets. An accident in 1964 did his part in this case, as the couldn't effectively use the pinky on the fretboard (left hand).
Carl's sure putting that Fender Jazzmaster through its paces. It's kind of funny but I seriously doubt that Leo Fender had any idea that his Jazzmaster guitar would wind up around the neck of the likes of country artist Carl Perkins playing Rockabilly. But that's the greatness of Leo Fender and his guitar designs, they get played for music they weren't intended for. Like the 'short scale student guitars': the Fender Jaguar & Mustang being used in the Surf Music of the 60s. (I have a Fender Jaguar (Blacktop HH) in my arsenal of guitars, it Rocks :-)
The majority of Leo Fender's early endorsers were hillbilly and western swing artists. He made steel guitars as well don't forget. He knew full well where those guitars would end up.

It became apparent very quickly that he was neither a country artist or a rock and roll Artist, he got lucky with " Blue suede shoes" as it had the early rockabilly kind of sound fused with country music, this gave him a huge hit, Follow up singles were fairly weak and aimed too much at an audience he didn't really have, if it weren't for Elvis covering his big hit and turning it into his own and thus ensuring many others would copy it, plus his connection to the king, Help from Cash and others, he'd have been long forgotten.
