  • damianbacci.com Carl Perkins is known around the world as the King of Rockabilly. Join me as I travel to Tennessee and visit Carl's boyhood home in Tiptonville. Then I'll make my way to the city of Jackson and visit Carl's home & final resting place. I'll also stop by the Carnegie Museum featuring The Legends of Tennessee Music. There's a Carl Perkins exhibit inside that I'd really like to see. Also in the museum is Carl's very first electric guitar.

68 here. I've played guitar about 50 years. If only I'd had Marty Schwartz, Brian Kelley, and people like Damien Bacci; I could go on and on. There's stuff by Brent Mason on Truefire and people like Tommy Emmanuel in videos on RUclips like this; again on and on... Mainly a blues guy; spent a month "getting" the double step bend with vibrato at the end that's the first note on the first Billy Gibbons solo in LaGrange. There's tab and expert help for anything ya wanna play; amazing really for a guy with no natural ability but who works at it. Rock on! 🤘

Absolutely fascinating little documentary Damien. 😊
    Well done!
As a musician myself, I KNOW that feeling of "reverance" you have for Carl, because I feel the same way about some of my departed "heroes"...Django, Wes, Peter Green, Joe Pass, Rory Gallagher, etc.
I made a similar pilgramage to "Rory Gallagher Street" in Rory's home town of Cork, in Ireland, and I spent a lot of time on Canvey Island, in Essex, U.K, where the iconic rock and roll band Dr. Feelgood came from, and visited many of the spots on the island featured in the documentary about them...
    "Oil City Confidential".
It's about the "brotherhood" of musicians.
We each "know"..."that FEELING"...which binds us all.
Thank you for that video Damien.
You are a good man, a kind human-being, and a great musician. 😎

Wonderful tribute to a great man. Carl was a great talent who didn't need a Memphis Mafia around him 25 hours a day. Love the concert video of Carl playing with Harrison, Clapton and others.
There is another video on YT where a man and his daughter stopped by and had a nice chat with Carl on his front lawn. 😊

One of the sadist things I read, was his autobiography where Sam Phillips at Sun "gave him" a cadi for record sales in front of the press. This was actually an advance on royalties. (He didn't want) so that x-mas he had to pick cotton to buy toys for his kids. What killed him was because he had a hit song on the radio and showed up to the fields in a Cadillac people thought he was doing it to crap on them working class folks as a joke. The last thing this nice guy would ever do!

@@vayabroder729 he may have, but Phillips and every other "Record Man" was known for buying their Stars Cadillacs ON THEIR OWN NICKEL!
They'd "give" the cars to those youngsters, but not tell them that they were in fact bought on future Royalties... Pretty crooked, if ya ask me😉

Carl definitely was the most influential guitarist of his generation if you ask me. It's not just his rockabilly classics, it sure is everything he's ever recorded. I appreciate this tour dedicated to his life and career, I wish I could've done it myself too. Way too little appreciation for probably the kindest and most important Tennessean in the history of rock and roll. If you ask me for my favorite songs, I'd have to give the following answer:
    Rockabilly: Pointed Toe shoes (59) + Honey Don't (55)
Ballad: It's You (68) + Power of my Soul (69)
Country: One more loser going home (73)
Fusion: State of confusion (70) + Lake County Cotton Country (68)
    Blues: CC Rider (69)
His later work deserves more respect and attention for sure. He absolutely had it all.

I played the guitar used on "Blue Suede" and "Pointed Toe Shoes," and Stan took me around to all the houses the family lived in from the 60s on. We knocked on doors and people let us right in. What a killer video Damian! Couldn’t believe those yellow jackets in the house! Those are vicious! I thought he was from Jackson TN but it looks like he was from an even smaller town. That Harmony was just like the Ritchie Valens’ first guitar. Carl has used Gibsons, Epiphones, Fender Strats, Peavey T-25 or 35 and T-60 and G&Ls. Carl has always been one of my favorites along with Elvis. He was a beautiful, talented and humble man with a huge heart. The real deal!

    Hiya Damian!
Thanks for doing Carl a real solid.
    He truly was THEE Cat.
Years ago on a road trip, some buddies and me ran through there and were going to eat at Suede's... But we effed up and got there too early, to an ALMOST empty parking lot... So we figured we'd just sit there until the joint opened.
The only other vehicle in the lot was a white Town Car. Before too long, it slid up next to us and who was driving it?
Yep... None other than Mister Carl Perkins! He was sitting there, waiting on his staff to come and open the place up.
He invited the four of us to come on over and sit in his car to wait!
We Bee Essed for about a half hour, mostly about "how are you" and just regular HUMAN stuff... Not too much about music and that.
After the staff got there and opened up, he took us in and fed the four of us and then just disappeared.
It's one of my best memories... And what a Human Being that man was!
By the way... "Her Love Rubbed Off" was probably Carl's koolest tune😜
    Cheers!

This is wonderful, Mr. Bacci; thank you so much for sharing your pilgrimage with all of us. Your love of Carl and his music is palpable and your enthusiasm and excitement are contagious. I visited Jackson, TN back in 1999 and was lucky enough to dine at Suede's restaurant with my Dad. I tried Carl's favorite meal, fried catfish with hush puppies and collard greens and had the pleasure of meeting Carl's son-in-law, Bart Swift, who was a cordial and amiable man. A lot of Carl's memorabilia that is currently in the Carnegie Museum had been housed at the restaurant. I also was able to visit The Bandstand, where Carl shopped for music equipment. It was clear from everyone I met that day how much they loved, appreciated and missed Carl. He not only demonstrated what it meant to be a great guitarist, singer and songwriter, but also a friend, father, husband, brother, son and giving, caring human being. He brought so much beauty into the world and the afterglow remains.

Thanks Damien for posting this awesome video! Like you said, it is difficult to select a favorite Carl Perkins song, but Honey Don't, Boppin the blues, Put your catclothes on, Matchbox, and Blue suede shoes are defo on my list!
When you came into Casey Jones Village, it was a trip down memory Lane for me. I was there in September of 2002. Was the Carl Perkins sign allready there back then? I remember eating at the same place as you, and I have a picture of myself sitting on the bench outside of that store you were in.
I hope you make more trips like this, I really enjoyed it. How about Buddy Holly and Lubbock, Texas, or the Louisiana Hayride, wouldbe great. The closest I ever got to rock and roll history was visiting Sun in Memphis, Tenn, and Graceland, and Elvis' birthplace in Tupelo.
I really like both versions of Blue Suede Shoes BTW, I'm in the middle, sometimes I prefer Carl' Sometimes I prefer Elvis' . They're both good for sure. Did you also read Disciple in Blue Suede Shoes, the biography of Carl?
Thanks man for showing all these places. And I also enjoy your guitar lessons. Keep it up, and keep on rockin' !

Great job Damien!! Must have been a drag to watch Elvis do Blue suede shoes on TV, while he laid in the hospital after a car accident he got into on the way to doing a TV show himself. You wouldn't know it to hear Careeinfl tell the story he sounded grateful and humble...Got my hands on a Peavey T60 after seeing Carl and friends, love it ! Elvis, Scotty, and Bill visited Carl in hospital. Probably all good mates. Then Elvis made it big and was to weak to look after his mates. Had his old band in Hollywood and payed them peanuts. Giving cars to strangers and freeloaders but not looking after Scotty, Bill, and DJ. Sad. But then Scotty and DJ probably had a happier life than Elvis.

Thank you for this video. I've already seen your lesson on how to play the solo from (I need your love tonight), and it always revolves around Elvis, directly or indirectly! I'm even an Elvis fan. I saw on the video that Mr. Carl Perkins influenced many artists such as Elvis,...That's not true, it was Elvis who opened the way for everyone, Mr. Perkins. admits himself, he took up titles already revived by the King (That's all right Mama and the others) without managing to come up with anything. He played "in the style of Mr. Scotty Moore" who for me is the true King of Rockabilly even if he doesn't sing: All your solos, you rockabilly musicians, come from the style of Scotty Moore. Go listen to his Rock'n Roll solos again (Hound Dog, Long Tall Sally, Lawdy Miss Clawdy, etc...).

Carl’s Nextdoor neighbor is a close friend of mine. 25 years ago we were traveling back to Michigan and stopped to see our friend’s Gary and Marilyn . He explained how so many famous people in their big bus’s would park in Carl’s circle driveway. Jackson was midway between Memphis and Nashville. Carl had a recording studio almost in Gary’s back yard. Music might go on very late. I must admit I had to ask my friend who Carl Perkins was. It did not take too
    long for Gary to explain!
