    Literally made a channel JUST to comment this. In Japan they repair broken plates, mugs bowls etc with gold. Don’t know how (maybe gold resin..?) BUT it looks extraordinary and it’s meant to symbolise the beauty in putting broken things back together! Cute, poignant and v. functional: what’s not to love?

I really ALMOST never shop in retail stores as thrifting gives you way more enjoyment! I thank the gods that my mother raised me and my sisters right in that my fondest memories is of day long thrifting trips to "the big city." Thank you for bringing that joy back AND NOW i must try your tiramisu recipe!!!!

    I remember the time when my brother just moved to Berlin (where I live) and I said "hey, I just got this new sofa table, we just gotta pick it up, was a real steal, can you please help?" (which is never so much a question but a "you come help"). Of course it was marble and I still get serious side eye from my brother whenever we talk about this bonding, humbling (as you said) experience. Needless to say it was worth it and the table is a masterpiece. Never pass on a marble table.

    Try oiling and waxing with orange oil, it’ll expand the wood back to how it used to be, I had a checkerboard chopping board that did the same. It’s like magic 🪄

    To fix the bowl, just cut a wedge of wood to size, a bit bigger than the crack itself. Place into the open space either glueing it all together (make sure it’s a tight fit) or somehow slam a few nails in it (you could use wooden ‘nails’ to make it look better, just drill a hole where you want the nail to go, find a long round stick of wood ever so slightly thicker than the hole diameter and ram it in but with care). Afterwards just sand the impurities till it looks nice and round. Finish with a food safe something, like beeswax or boiled linseed oil (read instructions carefully, since it can combust spontaneously, never throw the rag you use to rub it in straight in the garbage).

    Drill small holes on both sides of the gap. Use metal wire or cooking twine to repair the gap. It will look very unique

    That pie dish at 0:25 has the same design as my parents' Dansk dinnerware. I think the pattern is called Maribo and it was only made in the 80's, so definitely vintage.

    Soak your teak bowl for a couple of days to swell the wood, add Elmer's glue and clamp it for 24 hours.

  • @thehumblefactory
    @thehumblefactory Год назад

    The cleanest way to fix the bowl, if you have access to a table saw or large band saw, is to cut the bowl in half in line with the grain of the bottom circles wood. Then break the small wedge all the way off, clean the surfaces, then glue it back on with a polyurethane glue (like gorilla glue brand in the US). This glue needs a humid wood, so wipe the joint with a wet paper towel about 1 mins before glueing. Once the two halves are solid again, use a large disk sander or a sheet of sand paper glued to a flat surface to sand the inner surfaces flat, and then glue the two halves of the bowl back together, again with polyurethane glue, and a nice clamping setup. This seems more complicated than cutting a wedge, but in reality, to cut a wedge that fits well, you'll need all these tools anyway. And you'll never get a sturdy glue joint trying to drive a wedge into the wood like that - it's likely to split the other side from the force of pushing the wedge in. Good luck, it's a beautiful bowl!

    Hi Carolina- You found some great stuff! I love to thrift too! It's a treasure hunt! I am so glad I found your channel because you make cooking so approachable and fun, I am looking for a food processor or a blender to make some of your recipes. Do you think I need both? Which one would you purchase first?

    • @gelen
      @gelen  2 года назад

      That makes me so happy! Thank you for being here, Janet! I would purchase a food processor first, I find myself using it much more often than my blender :)
