Kenya: President Ruto Says “Friends” Helped Pay for Luxury Private Jet to US | Firstpost Africa
Kenyan President William Ruto defended his use of a luxury private plane for his landmark trip to the United States, saying it cost taxpayers less than $80,000 and that it was cheaper than using the national airline, which was initially planned to use. Last week, the Kenyan president made a State Visit to Washington in a luxury charter plane. The Kenyan media reported that the cost of renting the jet was estimated to be $1.5 million. However, Ruto says there was no way he could have spent that amount. Criticism has poured in as ordinary Kenyans struggle with a high cost of living and a raft of new tax hikes. Ever since becoming the president, Ruto has raised several taxes and imposed new ones and critics have alleged these taxes are being used to fund the government’s extravagance.
