Coppicing and pollarding do encourage suckering on the black locust. So maybe worse on the honey. I may try the black locust but I want to pollard it for firewood. Concerned about the sucker growth. One can dig the young suckers up from the root and replant or burn. My issue is that, while I can deal with a tree like this, I’m only going to be around and kicking for maybe 25 years if I’m lucky… 35 if I quit my bad habits and adopt better ones. I like to think about future value vs future nightmare for whoever gets my homestead after I’m gone. Which I hope my grandchildren will be able to enjoy.
I was originally looking for just tree removal estimates, but then came accross your video. Your thumbnail was what made me click, because this is EXACTLY the demon tree that we have in our backyard. And it's enormous. I've never seen anything like it before moving to our house. Thanks for the information. I'm going to start researching this a bit more.
Good luck! These trees are insane! Just an update, the leaves on the tree and the smaller ones are turning completely yellow. So this stuff is working. I am still not sure what I'm going to do with the big tree once I cut it down - it's going to be very tricky to handle! haha. Thanks for watching
You have one in your backyard? I'm surrounded by thousands of those satanic tire eaters. The state occasionally pays for herbicide and it takes a month with a tractor to put it all out.
I used tordon rtu on some very invasive bamboo in my yard, i got back a strip 30 foot wide by 80 foot or so, planted watermelons in that spot just 2 years later... still have stragglers 5 years later..i just keep cutting out to kill it, but the tordon got the bulk of it. I just saturated the stumps as soon as i cut it... still pulling dead roots out.. bamboo hardly rots, and cant burn it because each node explodes like a tiny grenade...
How about smashing each node with a hammer before tossing it into the fire? I assume the explosion happens because air is trapped between any two nodes… Just an idea, haven’t tried it yet.
I HATE these trees!! The thorns can go right through tires, animal feet, and shoes. I have been trying to eradicate these trees on our property for years now. The only way I have found is crossbow, but it is not available in all states and you have to be VERY careful not to get it close to other desirable trees. In that case you just have to keep pulling and chopping all of the root suckers that keep trying to come up and it takes years.
I’m enjoying watching the progress yall are making on the farm. Looking good and keep it up!
Thanks! It’s been a journey and we’re just getting started!

Or as an alternative you could hire me to care for and nurture these trees.
I have a brown thumb and they wouldn't stand a chance.
if you can figure out a way to harvest their branching thorns than you can use them as fishing hooks and arrow heads
Sick, I have one on my property and want more for the wood. I wonder if taking that one down will sprout more.

Wow hope you can get rid of the nasty trees!
Those thorns could be repurposed as nails.
The honey badger of trees!

They are truly a nightmare!
I love honey locust
Yeah I have a ton of these trees but in the right place they are exceptional security
Had one go through my boot and foot all the way
Yikes! These things are nasty. Did you get rid of the tree yet?
That hurts. Can you still walk?
