      What does that specifically mean?

    • @Nah27Nah
      @Nah27Nah 3 года назад +109

      Dayan Bernal Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think it’s referring to the cost of sustainable clothing and products in general. Sustainable products are usually more expensive, therefore making it harder for those who make lower incomes to have access to them. In most cases, you have to be well off, live pretty comfortably, or earn a decent salary in order to afford the luxuries of sustainability. So, if you are able to afford the benefits of a sustainable lifestyle, then you can consider it a privilege.

    • @xchromos
      @xchromos 3 года назад +10

      @@Nah27Nah exactly right!

    • @xchromos
      @xchromos 3 года назад +38

      @@dayanela376 Sun. V explained it perfectly but let me elaborate! fast fashion is more often more accessible and more affordable to low-income people than most sustainable brands. there are some low-cost sustainable swaps out there, but for many low-income people, sustainability is more expensive.
      for example, the cost of a 5-piece set of 25 oz. glad brand plastic tupperware from my local target is $2.99 USD. at the same target, the lowest cost 25 oz glass container is $5 USD for one (1) item.
      if you want to take sustainability a step further, buying glassware to save leftover food in from target (a massive corporation that produces a lot of waste) isn't the same as buying glassware from a small specialty glassware company that is transparent about where they source materials from, how they treat their workers, whether their wages and benefits are fair, if they do community service outreach, and so on. there are so many levels to this!
      some sustainable alternatives, while pricier, *do* last longer than non-sustainable ones, but for many low-income people, the upfront cost can't be justified. i myself try to make as many green changes i can in my everyday life, but that's because i have a full-time, salaried job that allows me the privilege of doing so.

    I've found the best way to have sustainable fashion when you don't have the $$$ is a locally owned thrift store. Money goes directly back to the community (there is one in my town that is set up solely to buy school supplies for kids in need) plus everything you buy goes into a second use.

      I am guilty of retail therapy and over consumption but the truth is we only need a few pieces to live with. so buying a $100 dress is better than buying 5 dresses for $100. So I guess what I am trying to say is that yes its pricey but so are our iPhones, homes, cars, and ect. everything we buy should be investments.

    • @danielleshereese
      @danielleshereese 2 года назад +8

      sustainable/ethical practices aren’t one size fits all. even if fast fashion is whats accessible to you, we can limit shopping to what we need. only buy new when what we have is no longer useable. try getting things repaired instead of throwing away. and maybe once or twice a year, if possible invest in a higher cost staple item, coat, shoes, pants etc that will last years. i’ve started taking this approach & it’s reduced my consumption for sure.

    YES! thank you for sharing about Thousand Fell. My bf was looking to for white sneakers and Common Projects are definitely too expensive. Now I can get the TF sneakers for him as a birthday gift that are ethnically made and great for the environment :) - xoxo subbie from Toronto, Ontario

    I’m Canadian and I was afraid that you were gonna talk about brands that might not be accessible where I live since it’s the first time I see one of your videos. I was reassured as soon as I heard you say “about”.

    I completely agree with what you said in the beginning! I will rarely ever go shopping for anything new and if I do I thrift but even then I suck at shopping in general 🤣if I’m in line for more than two minutes I start to think “do I really like this piece” even if it’s super cheap
