OMG, cannot believe it actually worked. I was just about to give up and start looking for a new wireless mouse because opening up the mouse and cleaning all the lint inside did not fix the problem. Had some plumber's tape on hand and used it as in the video, and now the scroll wheel works. Thanks a lot!

Brilliant! I repaired my Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500 using PTFE plumber's tape. The center mouse wheel lost its scrolling grip years ago and now it works! I was so close to shopping for a new one! Gotta love YT for these brilliant hacks! Thanks!

    Thanks man, it works!
In my case, I've used micropore as I didn't have the thread type. The key is, you need to make the shaft thicker to reduce the gap between the shaft and rotating wheel in my opinion.

Thanks because your video encouraged me to try and fix my mouse insted of discard it. In my case, a wireless Genius, the encoder was rolling smooth, nothing seemed to be malfunctioning, so I decided to use a Wahl oil (yes, the electric hair clipper) on it, and it started working again from almost being unusable. Afterwards, I removed the excesss of oil and got back to work :)

Thank you so much for the solution! I've been struggling with the mouse wheel for a while and couldn't find a fix. I guess, at least in my case, the plastic must have worn down over time, which is why it became too thin to make proper contact.

  • @waburden

Thank you Sir! The cogwheel not moving was the issue and the critical clue to my fix! Yaaay! I found it easier to layer a small square over the cogwheel hole and push the shaft through rather than trying to attached the tape to the shaft (not much shaft to work with).

I had a slightly more extreme problem. The shaft of the wheel had snapped where it enters the encoder. I was able to retrieve the tiny nub that was still in the encoder. I then pushed a hot needle down the centre of the nub and into the shaft of the wheel. I then dusted the joint with bicarbonate of soda and put a few drips of superglue onto it. After allowing it to set completely (about 10 minutes) I then cut off the excess needle (that was still sticking out), reassembled and it works.

my days of trying to fix my Razer Viper mini leads to cleaning dust from the wheel, to noticing the lack of resistant of the scroll wheel and ended w/ the same treatment. it seems like the wheel shaft being dislodged case the wheel to slip and lose contact why the scroll jumps back and forth. cool!

Went to try this on an Onn. mouse, but there are no visible screws on the bottom. The feet are plastic, and peeling back the corner damages the plastic, so I'm not sure if there are screws to remove underneath, meaning this fix might not be possible on models like this. Granted, the mouse itself costs about $12 these days, but I'm more annoyed by the disposal requirements of electronics than the costs of a new one.

When you click on the wheel, it should have unrestricted movement up and down. So I suppose, a flexible (silicone-type) glue may work. But not the super glue.
