Yes it is! When we first started getting into dapples, I thought it was a lot more simple. I figured if we bred a dapple buck on a dapple doe…. Presto. Not so much. 🫤 If you get a good doe that throws dapple babies, keep her around! 😎
The unpredictability is what i was hoping to figure out here. Same buck bred a doe and her daughters. Mom gave out 3 copies of herself, one daughter did too, but her sister have us one thats half the dads color and half one that neither really showed. Another mom made copies of her 2 prior kids, but her daughter gave us one with long ears. Its fun, but i wish i could predict it better.
Thanks for sharing! Color genetics can get so complex. I've been doing research into the genetics of chicken colors and seeing how it plays out in my flock. It's interesting that the dairy breeds stay so true, but then a lot of purebred traits tend to be homozygous and if those are dominant, they would overshadow a recessive gene from the dad. I wonder if you would have better luck getting dappling from the second generations (breeding these babies you showed us and see what happens)? Of course genetics are complicated and it's hard to predict what will happen when multiple loci are involved.
Very interesting! Thanks for the shot of Laverne! How do you market your Nigerian Dwarf, Boer crosses? Is there a demand for them? The most unusual colour pattern we ever had was a brown buckling with an entirely white hindleg all the way up to his hip. Both of his parents were solid red Boer.
You can’t beat a Nigerian dwarf cross with a boer for nice stocky, moderately sized goats with good milking ability. Hobby farmers love them. They are a very under appreciated cross breed. 👍🏻
@@LinessaFarms Although I can't say we have people knocking on our door for them, we have found the Mini Myotonic crosses nicely with the Boer for the same reasons you mentioned with your ND X Boer. They grow so well and seem hardy. Must be the hybrid vigor. They would make great market meat kids but they are just too darn cute.
We are breeding for some dapple goats and it's very interesting how this works.

What all types of goats do you have?
Nigerian dwarf, Alpine, Boer, Kiko, Oberhasli, and a bunch of crosses.

We’ve bred out about 3 generations. The odds appear to be about the same. It’s quite the interesting subject.

will i still have hybrid vigoe if i breed an f1 male with an F1 female?
It would depend on how far apart they are from the same bloodline.
