My nephew was diagnosed 3 years ago with testicular cancer that had spread to his liver, lungs, lymph nodes and 5 small spots on his brain. He played high school football and thought the pain was from training. He had chemo and a stem cell transplant that almost killed him but has bought him more time. He graduates high school this weekend and I couldn’t be more proud.

"If it doesn't get better in a couple days, come back." After years of dealing with my health problems and those of my Mom and other family members, I've learned that doctors know far less than we think they do. Don't hesitate to push, to advocate, for your health or that of a loved one. It is your body, your life.
The best doctors are the ones who know their limitations and listen to their patient's questions and concerns without getting defensive.
Otherwise, their ego is getting in the way of giving good care.

Less than 2 weeks later, he was gone. The only 'bright' spot was that he didn't have a chance to experience pain/not feeling well prior to his death. My most sincere condolences to Kyle's loved ones and friends. What a shock they're experiencing now. As tragic as it is for your family member, you literally have the indecency to come on this comment board and tell us a story about a person who lived to be 48. FORTY EIGHT!!!!!!!!! Versus a 16 yr old child. This was a kid whom I'm sure he wished to have lived to see 21 let alone 48. Your comment had nothing to do with the loss of this boy (who never graduated, got married, had kids) but it had everything to do with you. It's impossible that he was happy and healthy one day and gone the next from leukemia. Healthy organs don't shut down in a day. That's a gradual process and there would've been lots of signs and changes along the way. Fatigue, weight loss, swollen lymph nodes. He would've been stage 4 at that point. It would've needed to be caught in an early stage to help him. Even if the doctor at the emergency room visit for the back had diagnosed it, there still would've been nothing to be done at that point. Yearly checkups and bloodwork on your kids is critical.

As a cancer nurse I understand this. Let me explain. Acute leukemia can cause the white blood cells to double in 20 minutes. They are not strong cells and crowd out the red blood cells and platelets from the bone marrow. Therefore no cells to support life. No hemoglobin to carry oxygen to the organs
and no platelets to regulate clotting or bleeding. White cells are worthless at fighting bacteria fungi or viruses.

Not that it's necessary for me to note this, too, but... no vaccine nor treatment has a 100% success rate. NONE. As in zero. For thousands of years, too. The data doesn't support "panaceas". What the data DOES support is readily available for intelligent people to access, research, and start doing some math and statistics. But even ONE PERCENT of Earth's population is an absolutely ginormous number. This is something that very few ever consider.

He began treatment right away and he ended up dying from the amount of fluids in his body the nurses gave him. He was only in the hospital for 2 weeks. We lost my mom this past January to complications from esophageal cancer that went undetected until the last week of her life. She was hospitalized in December after a fall, and a routine scan revealed masses, only one of which was biopsied and turned out to be fatty liver disease. Then in January, she returned to the hospital where it was determined that she also had esophageal cancer that was already terminal. One week later, she was dead. On top of that, dementia had robbed her of her mind to the point where the Wednesday before her death she didn’t even know who I was! I freaking HATE cancer like that now-so many types are sneaky bastards that eat away at you until they’re already too advanced to treat by the time you get noticeable symptoms!

So, for those who are saying the title is misleading, Leukemia is a group of blood cancers that affect the body's blood cells, mainly the white blood cells. Leukemias are blood cancers where the cancer cells can be found in the blood. There are several types, but 4 main types. The term leukemia covers more than one cancer, and they're cancers affecting the blood-forming cells in bone marrow. Before you judge the title, don't hesitate to research.

That advice was likely from the urgent care when he went for the initial back pain. Then when he went back, being bumped up to the hospital is when they would have discovered the leukemia. I’m an oncology nurse, and sadly, I’ve had patients with this same presentation. The symptoms of leukemia are vague and non-specific that they are often ignored or mistaken for something else. Severe back pain is a symptom, though not common of ALL. Like this young man’s case, it often isn’t until they are in a full blast crisis that the disease is discovered. It’s awful. I feel for his poor parents going thru this right now.

My two year old grandson had a cold. Then came a fever. The doctor said it wasn’t high enough to be concerned…it was a 5 day fever. When the fever didn’t go away my son and his wife took him to the children’s hospital in our city. Within 3 hours he was diagnosed with ALL leukaemia and Strep A and began a cocktail of meds to fight the infection before they began chemo. A week later another high fever and heart racing and he had e-coli. Chemo was halted and another cocktail of meds to get rid of the infection and then started back on chemo. We almost lost him twice due to the infections and his near absent immunity. It’s been 3 years and he rings the bell in July. We don’t realize how something as simple as a cold could be the precursor to a serious disease. They’ve changed doctors. It wasn’t her fault but they don’t trust her any longer just the same. They needed someone to be less laid back about certain symptoms. 5 day fever? Come on.
