That cart limitation reminds me of the launch of Shell Petrol Station POS system (currently in use Globally on all Company own site) back in 2010.
One of the branch I was working on was part of the pilot launch and the Point of sale (POS) use to get stuck after scanning 12 items!
Some programmer thought "no one buys more then 12 items at a petrol station" and "desk jockeys" at Shell HQ didn't bother checking with the branches.
Took them another 6 months to sort that mess out on an application at that time was ready for launch globally to replace the old POS and back office systems.

I kind of had a similar bot in my apartment building in the US. There was an app you could load money onto and then buy the food from the app then it would give you a qr code you scan at the machine and it'd dispense the order.
But the bot in the conbini has way more options than the bot in my building. It'd be kind of nice for like if you're getting ready in the morning and you know you just want to grab a drink for your commute but not have to go through the hassle of going through the aisles, then bringing it to the cashier and paying. It definitely helped save time but yeah, some times the app would display food that it either was out of or not display some items that were recently stocked. There needs to be a better way for the bot to know what it has for it to be 100% convenient.
Super fun though, I remember having that 'the future is now' feeling when I first used it :D

  • @PhilXavierSierraJones
    @PhilXavierSierraJones 3 года назад

If they iron out the issues, I think this could be quite fun to use.
If anyone at MOPU team is reading this:
    - Increase the amount of items that can be added per order
    - Simplify the process of purchasing the items and paying for it (for example: tap-and-go or pay at the store)
    - Remove the debug items or out of stock items from the list, or fade them out so it's clear that item cannot be purchased

I think the only way that those machines could succeed especially with being attached to a convenience store is to do something like what Kyde had said. Basically focusing on more grocery style items and quick essentials. For example things like bread, rice, simple toiletries and meds. Because right now why would you go through the trouble of putting another app on your phone when you could just go right to that main store?
Also side note Japan’s actually pretty on with the trend of oat milk it’s only just started to show up on shelves here in the US within 2020 and the cafe I work in only just now added it to the menu for drinks same with the Starbucks in town too.

I somehow imagine they just placed multiple normal vending machines behind that wall and a poor little robot just goes around feeding them with coins, then delivering everything to the front.
As for the alcohol, if that not-so-multi MOPU is open 24/7, I doubt a real person will have to stay awake through the night just to check customers through the cam. Maybe the age verification already happened with the credit card, because only adults usually have one?
I hope adding the e-sheep doesn't require age verification.

Australia is very backward when it comes to shopping experiences. We introduced self checkout years ago and there has been very limited testing of mobile apps to scan products on our phone and self checkout.
Shops are introducing click and collect however that relies on a germ bag picking up your goods and delivering them to your car.
So if you want to avoid covid germ backs here in Australia then you are out of luck.

Hmmmm ok…. Well the ability to pick up that’s essentially “contact free”… is a new thing with covid here in Canada so I see the benefit to it… BUT if the selection is very limited and you need to go in the store to get the rest of what you want then it kinda defeats the purpose. This would make total sense if everything in the store was available to pre order on the app. A delivery option for the store would be cool, saving you actually going to the store. This is becoming a big thing here with many stores delivering via apps like “skip the dishes” and “Instacart” and such… Interesting
Edit to add: 6 items max is kinda a bummer… and again defeats the purpose of the whole thing 🤷‍♀️
Wow also the 3rd party pay thing… just annoying!

Here in the U.S., our local Walmart’s have a giant vending machine in a tube neat the entrance. If you order something on line, to be picked up in store, you flash your QR code at the machine it makes vending machine sounds, the door slides open and voila, your package. I also think if you got to see some of the robot action it would help in the allure of it. Like if the back wall was a window and the arm was arranging the green trays of orders or selecting some items to put in an order... that sort of thing. It's basically a giant vending machine so it should let you see the package of pretzels slide into the slot after you press the button... you know... it's part of the experience.

I'm surprised the MOPU has lasted so long. It's clearly not going to take enough to pay it's way and make a profit for the operator. And limiting each order to 6 items makes that even more certain.
