After watching the Reid games where they were mic'd up, it was really hard going back to just commentary. I strongly feel that the game audio adds SO much to the presentation.
Yeah, I honestly really didn't like sphere in this matchup and idk why he didn't board it out. I don't like his sideboard plan at all. I like that he waited it out and dodged the path, but if you are playing the wait it out game, you are basically hoping u hit runner runner krosan grip, which he miraculously would have; had he not dredged, which was such a heart sinks moment for the lands player as he only has 3 in the main. I also hate how he runs out his tireless trackers just to get removed without at least waiting to play a land and get 1-2 clues be4 they get removed. Those extra clues could have made all the difference. Another thing, I know he probably doesn't have the sideboard slots for this, but a good board plan for back to basics would probably include boarding out my wastelands for more basics lands ironically. As you can see, the miracles player just has so many basic lands that the wastelands aren't doing much.
Convinced Lucien doesn’t know why he put Sphere of Resistance in his deck. Before doing anything, ask yourself “does sphere have an effect on this card?” Don’t lay down a card without first considering the sphere. Sphere creates a hard stop on about every action you take after it comes down. Back to basics is such a strong card. The amount of weight it carried here was insane.
Thank Jesus H. Christ Reid is back. If I have to listen to Eduardo say “deaf’s shadow” or “free cards” or “finking” one more time I’m gonna fucking lose it.
It means he doesn't care about ego, it doesn't matter which basic lands one play while they do what they're intended, actually I love to do that since it is so satisfying to see how some stupid ego players get angry after losing against a player who has a non-foil cheap basics deck.
miracles doing miracles ! winning a major event without top. I'm so happy for Andrew Cuneo. 40 years old kid, great brewer, inventor of so many archetypes during the years (last that I remember were UB control in standard at pro tour KTK, and sphinx tutelage UR mill at pro tour origins in 2016). one of those many brilliant minds that never won as much as they deserved during their career. So much respect !
That last game was ridiculous. Lucien constantly forgetting about his sphere, I definitely would have been calling a judge on him. At some point it makes me think that he was intentionally forgetting.
Guess you've never had to play a full 8 rounds plus a full top 8 in 1 day. Guy was probably mentally tired by the time it was the finals. Judges are also right at the table dumbass
The number of GRVs committed by Lucien in not paying extra for his own pimped up Sphere of Resistance's tax would have led to the upgraded path of having at least a Game Loss just from one game. (Edit: I'm an idiot for the next statement. Did not see him tap the Mox Diamond for it) Also, 54:51 - I didn't know Riftstone Portal combined with Wasteland also provided red mana to cast the Punishing Fire. AND "forgetting" to pay the Sphere's tax again.
Thespian stage has an ability thats 2c and tap to copy target land. when you copy dark depths the stage becomes a dark depths with no counters and you sac that to get the token.
I wondered the same thing. Second game ends with 3 wastelands on the field, and curiously enough during the 3rd game they show up again. You wouldn’t actually want them against miracles so what would have been the point of somehow cheating, I bring it up to suggest the shuffling wasn’t done all that well but you may be on to something.
It was kinda painful to see Lucien lose game 3 by mistiming the Sheltered Thicket cycle He wouldn't have been guaranteed to win with that Krosan Grip (Cuneo could still Swords the Marit Lage, keep a CMC 3 card on top for Counterbalance, counter Punishing Fire multiple times and then ultimate Jace, etc.), but it could have given Lucien a real shot to steal that game
Why does the lands deck not have ghost quarter? The ability to loam it and ruin land base seems broken Also why doesn’t lands run any of the gatewatch eldrazi
Am I missing something? Lucien game 2 kept tapping wasteland and dark depths to cast life from the loam when neither produce green, and depths doesn't even produce mana
I tend to always give people the benefit of the doubt... but is it coincidental that he all of a sudden continually forgot to pay for his own Sphere of Resistance only when back to basics was constructing his mana? He always remembered before it was advantageous to forget... just sayin
It's a mox diamond, not opal. Instead of having the artifact number requirement, it has the caster discard a land, which is how Lucien is able to get some of his lands into his graveyard for Life from the Loam
Lucien would have won the second game if he had had started aggressively cycling tranquil thicket to dig with Life From the Loam as soon as Jace came down, instead of waiting 2 turns to draw the second Thicket. I know he was trying to play around a potential extraction, but he was in a position where if Andrew had the extraction, it was going to be GG anyway. Pointless defensiveness. He would have hit that Dark Depths combo and the punishing fire 2 turns faster, 2 turns before Back to Basics was played.
How is Dark Depths able to activate so quickly every time I see it played? Don’t you need at most 30 mana total to get rid of all counters? Am I missing some card that he played?
He plays Thespian Stage, and use it to copy the depths: it becomes a second Dark Depths, whitout any counter (the original Depths is destroyed by legendary rule)
@@mothermary3796 No it is not, Thespian Stage makes it a basic land. That is why you can use it to protect your own stage from Wasteland. It becomes a copy of the land, except it also has the Thespian Stage effect.
Indeed strange. Based on this, it feels like he borrowed several of the actual cards from a friend and pulled some cards from various decks /binders just to play in the tournament. It seems as if he ran out of time and had to jump on the plane to go.. That said, what bothers me is that they're foiled, though.. I could understand grabbing the closest land pile on the shelf at the time..
Why doesn't the miracles player sideboard a couple dissipates.? Overall it's a very weak card for legacy sure but it would destroy the loom card and since hes running snaps its conceivable that he could exile multiple copies of it. I know hes running surgical but still being able to have another way to exile stuff seems strong here.
3 mana for a counterspell is not in the range of legacy playable cards. on top of that, miracles don't want to play cards that trade 1 for 1, unless they're extremely efficient and cheap (like swords to plowshares).
Kindo boring that a singe card won the entire game. It just becomes very lucky drawing one of your 2 BtB in you first 3 turns... Yeah sure you have a million brainstorm effects but still....zzzz....
yeah, formats like this and even modern are great when you get 2 interactive decks against each other but in games like this its almost a game of Russian roulette with a revolver loaded with a silver bullet, which frankly sucks. At least in these older formats you have cards like Force to keep stuff in check but Modern atm really does suck imo.
I watched this whole event and christ what a boring format. I mean the extra layers of strategy surrounding cards like brainstorm and ponder are neat, but jesus christ almost every turn a brainstorm or ponder effect is going off is just miserable to watch.
Afaik, the supertype of a card is a copiable value, which gets copied by Thespian Stage. You might be thinking about cards like sea's claim, which indeed does not change the enchanted land's supertype. Btw, nice pfp.

We also get to find out which players are poor sports
Sorry to bother on an old post, but can you point me in a general direction to the videos where he plays mic'd up???
Nevermind! I found em. wow those GP videos with him are great!
Both Reid Duke and Marshall Sutcliffe are incredible commentators. That was such a joy to watch.
Lachlan O'Donnell They’re awesome, tho I prefer Marshall and LSV for the puns heheh
Reid quoting flavor text at 38:35 🐐
Reid Duke is such a homie. I never watch the side boarding but i found myself entranced in how cool these two are
Reid's play is unparalleled.
“Generally.. in Magic getting your library exiled is a big problem” 😂😂😂
43:16 Cast Portent targeting an opponent, like Richard Garfield intended :)
Love that flavor text read at 38:33
The Back to Basics/Jace TMS/Counterbalance lock against the Lands deck at game 3 was pretty sweet!
Back to basics is so good. It really makes UW miracles worth running
Wonder how many times he had a one sided sphere during the tournament...
Yeah, I honestly really didn't like sphere in this matchup and idk why he didn't board it out. I don't like his sideboard plan at all. Back before Legacy got turned into Modern Horizons Block Constructed
I think we need to appreciate the fact that a Portent was cast targeting an opponent in a 2018 Legacy GP Finals.

Amon Santos hey you gotta do what you gotta do
They are so ugly. at least the Island is the least ugly one. but it doesn't even depict an Island.

Anyone notice 33:11 guy on the right possibly looks at his top card before drawing it.
It was his draw step so it doesn't really matter. Just checked before he put it into hand
Aw man I wanted lands to win
Why at 35:55 did Cuneo use counterbalance? Just to check the top of his deck? He doesn't have any zero cmc spells.
Lands.
22:36 Lucien taps two wastelands to cast Life from the Loam?
I believe he has a riftstone portal in his GY
38:35 paying only 2 mana for a 3 mana Life From Loam, due to Sphere. NOT GOOD
See what u did there
The last game of the round before this he had literally the exact same draw of 2 mox’s, grove, and loam... WTF

Why did he untap the land 41:38?
Copied an island
Oh, thx... I missed
I’m so confused as to how he’s tapping dark depths for green mana ...
He has Riftstone Portal in grave, which lets him tap any land for green or white.
theres a land in his graveyard that makes all his lands tap for green or white
Who's cares blue is the only playable color in magic. No force of will, no Jace no wins.

I know this videos old but is there anyway to fix the decklist of lucien's lands deck
Why does the lands deck not have ghost quarter?
The ability to loam it and ruin land base seems broken
Also why doesn’t lands run any of the gatewatch eldrazi
You do not need to. You win with lock/Marit lage. Don't need ghost quarter when you have wasteland.
He does have Ghost Quarter I believe. He played one in one of the earlier rounds, maybe the semifinals
Why would you play Eldrazi... Like wtf
Back to Basics fucked him up good X'D
Am I missing something? Lucien game 2 kept tapping wasteland and dark depths to cast life from the loam when neither produce green, and depths doesn't even produce mana
Pretty sure he had Riftstone portal in the grave, which would allow them to tap for G/W
I didn't know diving top got banned in legacy I had quit magic for a while
hye guys... which green mana did he use to cast loam
the one from riftstone portal
HOW DOES LANDS WIN THAT FAST

20:00 nervous alright
Why does lucien tap dark depths?
Card in his graveyard that allowed all lands he controlled to tap for a green mana
