  • The Old Testament clearly teaches God is sovereign and has ruled since day one of creation. But the Bible also says that Satan is the god of this world. Has Jesus already deposed Satan as ruler of this world? Or do we await Satan's defeat at a future time? Let's look at what the Bible says about Satan's rule in this world and what it means for Christians.

    Peter G., THIS is fantastic. SO so often the Reformed/Calvinist/Post-millennialist reader HAS to presume a position about what Scripture says BEFORE they even get into God’s Word. How about we just read GOD’S Account of God, and how He interacts with the world in the light of what it ACTUALLY says, IN context, and IN the light of how God represents Himself and His attitude toward creation and mankind thru the cross which Christ bore BECAUSE God loves what HE has made. Like you noted, Hebrews 2:7-9 really should help the Reformed person out of their misconceptions. Thank you, very helpful, praise God.

    You have quickly become my favorite online bible teacher. Your approach is quite deliberate and thorough and your demeanor is Christian. I have been at a PCA church for a few years and the reasoning behind their eschatology is never taught- just assumed in things that are said. There seems to be a kind of 'wink-wink' understanding and in some places (not my church but it abounds online) even a condescending view of people who don't espouse their eschatology. I never thought I would see Christians do that to each other- especially publicly .
    It seems to me a difficult if not impossible case to make that Satan is currently bound. To those who say "Well, the world is better in ABC ways" (medicine, indoor plumbing, coffee houses), one can cite many more ways in which the world is getting worse. It does seem that the post-mil people NEED this to be true in order to validate their eschatology. The dispensational people don't 'need' anything to be true - we just observe the trajectory of things, which comports with the world becoming increasingly evil in the end times as Christ predicted they would. I believed the world was getting worse before I even knew what eschatology was.
    Your take seems to be both biblically sound and reasonable and I will have to be fully persuaded to believe otherwise before I change my mind.

    I know that this doesn’t really have anything to do with this episode, but as a posttrib guy myself, I would love to see you have a posttrib guest. By and large I agree with nearly everything pretrib guys say relating to eschatology being that was the soup I swam in for quite some time (MacArthur being my hero), but in time I came to not believe in a pretrib rapture (although I will gladly accept being wrong since I think the day of Christ’s return is extremely close). I appreciate the work you do on this podcast! Also, Waymeyer’s Amillennialism and the Age to Come is a great work!

      I love people who not only have changed their views, but also still searching knowing we might be wrong.
      Also love a Christian acting like a Christian in the comments instead of just arguing!
      Love MacArthur too prayers he gets healthy....I agree with lots he says but I'm not a calvinist.
      I bounce between pretrib and mid trib for rapture.... have lots of friends who are preterists and interesting and good conversations.
      Most of them are completely close minded to a fault but doesn't mean their wrong always.
      I try to always keep with Bible saying that it's to be used for correction and we should mature in our faith and understanding....so the door to having changing understanding is extremely important.
      Prayers to you! God bless!

    Great video as usual,. These issues show how serious the errors of preterism are. People can easily begin to downplay the significant role that Satan still plays. Yes, he's defeated but he's still dangerous.
    Is interesting how often preterists will say texts are not applicable to us anymore, like texts about the role of Satan or the sermon on the mount. One guy told me the wide and narrow gate was just for those ppl at that time who heard the sermon, not a general principle for all ppl of all time. I said wow, that's like even more "dispensational" sounding than the extreme hyper dispys out there.

      Yes! That is incredibly disturbing to me. I think you've hit it right on the head. I have not seen a justifiable standard for why some texts no longer apply. Ironically, many of these postmillennialists are theonomists saying the OT law still applies today... so it is a bit strange!

    Thank you for your gentle and gracious wisdom, Peter. I'm wondering if a distinction could be made regarding the nature of Satan's rule over "the world" and the authority he has in the lives of God's people. Luke 22:31-32 has been foundational in my understanding of how to practically engage the realities of the kingdom of darkness in this age. The power of the enemy is not to be taken lightly. At the same time, he can do nothing in the life of a believer apart from what serves God's purposes, as is clear for example in 2 Corinthians 12:7.
    Thus when I'm confronted with trials or temptations, my default response is not to think about the role of the enemy therein, but to seek to understand what God intends through what he has permitted. Do you consider that a valid approach?

    • @thebiblesojourner
      @thebiblesojourner  2 месяца назад

      I think this is a valid approach. Satan certainly does not have the same authority over us as believers that he has over unbelievers. We have been transferred from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light. So there is a marked difference now. Satan still affects us, but it is definitely within what God allows. Good thoughts.

    Follow up question for you: if it is basic common sense and a standard hermeneutical principle to see that earlier usage in a book guides later usage, would it be appropriate and consistent to apply that same hermeneutical principle to the use of the word generation in Matthew?

    • @thebiblesojourner
      @thebiblesojourner  2 месяца назад

      I do think that is a strong approach to that issue, yes. However, with that word, we need to be careful because there are other factors going on that people need to account for in each context.

    • @snibbornairb
      @snibbornairb 2 месяца назад +1

      @thebiblesojourner would you say that is unique to the word generation, or could it apply to the end of the age as well? In my opinion, I think you could take the whole segment of this current video where you talk about the usage of this age and replace the word generation in there and it would be just as strong of an argument. To be consistent, I would think that you would have to say that you have to take each usage and consider the context to whether or not it is the same referent as a usage before, or after it. Otherwise, this generation would be the same generation mention numerous times previous and would lead you to having alternate understandings of this age in the other passages.

    • @thebiblesojourner
      @thebiblesojourner  2 месяца назад

      @@snibbornairb Yes, you raise a good point. There are differences, not the least of which the word generation is much more generic in its use overall than the phrase, "end of the age," which functions pretty much like a technical designation. However, near context is always most important consideration. If you exegete Matthew 23-24 there are some standout differences from prior uses of the term generation. Matt 13 and Matt 24 are both talking about eschatological matters, so there is a major tie-in for the term end of the age. I really appreciate the main point though, no rule exists without additional considerations and complexities.

    • @snibbornairb
      @snibbornairb 2 месяца назад

      @@thebiblesojourner thank you for the second response. I appreciate our agreement on the matter. One last follow-up to the quality of generation versus end of the age, I think that parables would be the least desirable place to draw a technical meaning, given their literary nature. Also, I do believe there is quite the literary technical usage of generation which is meant to associate the wilderness generation (that was given the law and rejected God) Hope to the generation to which the new covenant was given in Christ, so that they would not be like the generation from the wilderness. But nevertheless, those in that generation who reject God will suffer the same fate. This fits well with the other usage of generation in Matthew as well as in 24.
      God bless.

    For me, it turns on what "the world" is. If it is the earth -- terra firma -- Satan is not the god of this earth. However, if the "world" is something else -- the fallen realm of mankind -- Satan is its god. I fine that my amil and postmil brethren make no such distinction.

    Satan's greatest trick is NOT, "convincing the world he doesn't exist"; rather, it's to turn the ministry of the Gospel into a ministry of the devil.
    "... to [the sea beast/Antichrist] the DRAGON (Satan) gave his power and his THRONE and great authority." [Rev. 13:2].
    The Antichrist ("man of sin, son of perdition") will continue in power all the way up until the 2nd COMING of Christ (the 2nd Advent):
    "...the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his COMING.." [2 Thes. 2:8].
    Problem with Futurism and Preterism? They can't properly identify the Antichrist.
    They both abandon the Reformation and Scripture and History on this vital issue.
    Questions?
    Let me know..

      I am not sure why it is a problem for futurism not to be able to identify the Antichrist before he comes? I mean, same thing happened with the Messiah right? It is just a replay of that scenario with a false Messiah figure.

      @@thebiblesojourner It's important because how are you going to avoid taking its "mark" if you don't know what it is, and can't identify the "earth beast" (Rev. 13:11-17) that enforces it, or the "sea beast" (Rev. 13:1-10) that comes up with it?
      That's a HUGE problem for Futurists and all who promulgate it to my Christian brethren.
      The Futurist teaching of a single, solitary, individual human being who only arrives during the last 3.5 years of earth's history before the 2nd Advent, has caused many Bible-believing Christians to stumble.
      Francisco Ribera (1537-1591) was a Spanish Jesuit theologian, identified with the Futurist Christian eschatological view.
