you're right about the grease, when the temps get down to freezing or below i clean my reels of grease and switch to light oil. be aware though that baitrunner reels are a super pain in the ass to take apart. definitely takes some patience and knowledge if you haven't done it before. that's a big part of why i now prefer conventional reels with a clicker instead of the complex baitrunners, i just don't have the time to mess around with them so i end up not performing regular maintenance, its way worse when ice fishing and your drag can lock up solid!
Yeah, not sure I want to open up those reels, could be going down a time warp rabbit hole. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Wind blowing at you usually means the fish follow the bait so yeh I’m usually happy to have a bit of wind blowing towards me
That was a special day two mirror carp, never have caught one not sure if we even have them out here. It was your lucky day in more than just fishing, it could have been something else beside your pack bait that you step on. Thanks for the video and hope you have a few more carp catching days left this year.

I see you’ve converted to bells on the rods. I tried bells on the rod holders for a while and although that worked I like the sensitivity of bells right on the rod itself.
I see in the other comments that you figure the water temp is in the 40’s there now. That’s inspiring for me as I’d kind of put the carp rods away for the season since our water temps had gone below 50. I might take a break from the tree stand (the rut is happening here in WI) to wet a line for a while!

Where I put the bells depends on the day. If there's wind noise or waves crashing, I'll put on the rod so I can hear them better. Thanks Art.
That first one was a nice looking fish. Almost like what is called the Crucian Carp in the UK.

I've been using the Daiwa Emcast LT 5000 bait runners for 2 seasons now and they are quite an upgrade from the cheaper Kast king, sougayilangs, etc. Take some getting used to because they are small and compact but they would probably look good with those Ugly Stik elites 😉. Wonderful video, congrats on those fully scaled mirrors!

I fish for carp alot and have had those kast king reels and they don't hold up very well but they are cheap. I recommend penn, shimano or diawa. Carp are awesome fighting fish. Good videos!!!

You have made this new game of carp fishing so much fun and a producer for me this season. I dunno know bout those suspicious Kastkings...been acting up lately... lighter slicky needed ...Chainsaw bar oil. Heavy yet super sticky.and cold doesn't make it catch or bind up until sound 22F. 2 mirrors though awesome Tom. Beasties.

Here the law states all our bait must be connected to our hook. No chumming allowed at all. I'd much rather let my hook swing independently like you do but we are a bit backwards in my state.
Right on, best to keep it legal. What state are you in? Apologies if you've mentioned it in the past, I don't remember.
I'm from the "wet side" of Washington State.. 'Bout 40 miles north of Portland Oregon. Our fisheries are so micro managed its beyond belief. When covid started 49 states said fishing was an acceptable outdoor activity.. Fishing here was made illegal.
I can understand why Washington would have strict regs, because there are still existing natural resources to protect. In Iowa, 99% of the land has been altered for human use. I'm not exaggerating, 92% is crop land and 7% is cities and roads. The rivers and lakes are filthy and full of agricultural runoff and livestock sewage. The regs are lax here because the natural resources are already trashed.

Seems like those inexpensive generic reels don't hold up to well. I've heard other RUclips fishermen complain about them. Nice mirror carp. Man that was a great day fishing! Enjoyed watching! 🙂👍

What factors make you select the spots you do? In a lake specifically?
Time of year, time of day, air temp, water temp, water depth, water clarity, wind direction, wind speed, barometric pressure, sunny/cloudy, lake bed composition, submerged structure, submerged vegetation, food sources, snags, competing fish species, shoreline accessibility, presence of annoying insects, noise, or people.
