    The only thing holding up the roof is the bales. That means that if the straw starts to rot this house becomes a death trap.
    Although, from an engineering standpoint it probably already is.

    • @jonaaal
      @jonaaal  4 года назад +2

      Hi Rudy, the walls are constructed above a air porous but capillary impermeable later so there is no dampness to allow rotting.

  • @mandypowell8793
    @mandypowell8793 5 лет назад +2

    Over time the straw or hay will shrink from the weight that is on it and you don't have enough support from the wood to hold the walls up. I'm afraid that over a 2 years period that you will begin to have structural problems and the building eventually falling causing someone to get hurt.

    • @jonaaal
      @jonaaal  4 года назад +2

      Hi Mandy, the walls were pre compressed with straps to mean there was very little shrinkage.
      The building was put up over 5 years ago now and it is still performing very nicely!

    Нужно было каждый тюк окунать в известковое молоко и между рядами проливать жидким глиняным раствором. А стены оббить дранкой и штукатурить глиняным раствором.

    why didn’t you use foam glass gravel for the bottom insulation?

    • @jonaaal
      @jonaaal  3 года назад +1

      I actually looked into the embodied energy of the glass vs the insulation value and compared it to polystyrene. We would have needed over 300mm of glass vs 100mm poly and the embodied energy of glass is a lot more than poly. FOr the base of the walls we used the glass as there was greater load bearing on a small area and we also wanted breathability/rodent resistance there so we went with the material with the extra energy content as it had the perfect properties.

    I dont understand... why would someone build a house with walls made of... wait...what? Straw?! With floors built so steadily and so firm...And a flat roof that is way to heavy for the straw walls to support... and what about the rain? And snow? Oh geez...do you have aspirin???

    • @jonaaal
      @jonaaal  6 лет назад +1

      aries, the floor is concrete to support heavy machine tools, a lathe, milling machine, radial drill etc. The roof is not too heavy for the walls, it is enough to take the snow load and it is covered in turf which mitigates a lot of rain run-off provides good sound and heat insulation and is blending in with the surroundings. Th straw walls are very strong in compression and are very good at insulating sound and heat.

    I just gotta ask ??? Why use Hay Bales ?? Why not just build regular Wood Walls ?? All the money and time invested seems like it would go to waste in a couple years !!????. Or sooner if a Spark catches the straw ?????. Please explain why you used the Straw Instead of Wood Walls ???. Other than, Very cool job !!

    • @jonaaal
      @jonaaal  4 года назад +2

      The straw and tender was actually cheaper than timber and insulation separately. With bales you have structure and insulation in one building block. It is low carbon, a waste product and when it is plastered with clay it is much more fire resistant than timber and cladding

    • @quip59
      @quip59 6 лет назад +1

      Andrea Sidnell rodents dont go in there if you have your details right...
      When the walls are plastered its closed and has a very good fire resistance.
      Strawbuilding is far beyond these simple problems

    • @jonaaal

      There are alternatives but this is a workshop with large metalwork tools, a milling machine and a lathe both weigh about a tonne so the floor has to be strong and flat

    • @jonaaal
      @jonaaal  6 лет назад +1

      The detail at the floor is the tyres. They are filled with foamed glass to insulate and also stop rodents. The walls are also plastered with clay and sand which rodents dont much like to eat.

    I'm sorry, but I tried to keep an open mind on this. There are some basic structural integrity issues with this concept and that's simply a lot of effort to construct something that simply won't last in many climate conditions. Not sure if the goal was to just show a viable alternative building option or if someone is just trying to prove they can build a building out of straw based on a bar room bet. I don't know that I would waste my time on building a structure like this. More power to those who do this and have no issues, but sorry, I'm out!
