Like Tariq Ali I read the I newspaper to confirm and remind myself just how appalling 'the West' has become, though I am finding it more difficult as time passes(once every few weeks now). The new generation of investigative journalists like Matt Kennard and Kit Klarenberg are a breath of fresh air.

The trickle of news in the MSM is more sinister than they said -- it is how they get the public used to accepting genocide. In the meantime, dissenting youth find themselves tens of thousands in education debt and their job offers withdrawn. You know why that has the public's attention.

In 1964, the U.S. Under Secretary of State visited Cyprus, accompanied by Major Martin Packard on a fact-finding mission. Packard recounts, "When we returned to Nicosia, Mr. Ball complimented me on what had been achieved. He then said, sympathetically, 'But you’ve got it all wrong, son. Hasn’t anyone told you that our target here is partition?'"
In June 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson made a blunt statement to Greek Ambassador Alexander Matsas regarding the Cyprus issue. Johnson said, "Forget your parliament and your constitution. America is an elephant, and Cyprus is a flea. Greece is also a flea. If these two fleas continue to irritate the elephant, they may just get whacked hard. We pay a lot of good American dollars to the Greeks, Mr. Ambassador. If your Prime Minister talks to me about democracy, parliament, and constitution, then he, his parliament, and his constitution may not last long." True to his words, in 1967, the CIA supported the installation of the Greek military junta, and in 1974, the U.S. gave the green light for the Turkish invasion.

This underscores the fact that the US deep state has no interest in other countries' freedom and democracy. This goes far back to the First and Second World War where they were playing a geopolitical chess game rather than a valiant stand against the threat to democracy, freedom etc. Didn't the post-war dependence on the US in Europe keep Europe just where the US wanted it, under its thumb, constantly subject to US interference and dominance, so that an independent stance on issues such as Gaza is rare among European countries?

As a Southamerican and a leftist, i am familiarized and somewhat sympathetic to the idea of an informal empire that determines the internal politics of other states. However, this idea is often interpreted in a way that presents weak countries as victims and underestimates internal class contradictions. In such framework, countries like Argentina or Chile, etc, would suffer coups mainly because of external pressure. Neoliberal candidates would be elected for the same reason. The sovereignty of these states would be violated in this sense. However, this is far from the truth if we focus our analysis on the interests of the local ruling classes, that are the main drivers of regressive political change, and they happen to coincide broadly with the world order. This and the influence of economic cycles should be at the center of the analysis of local policy, while external influence should be understood as a factor of support to willing class allies, rather than of violation of their will. In this setup, the working class is the victim rather than the country as such.
I think this interpretation is more accurate and is also more conducive to independent class politics. The opposite would be thirdwoldist politics that always lead to see the main contradictions in terms of countries and therefore lead to class collaboration.

At the end of 2017, there were approximately 41 000 listed companies in the world. Their combined market value was about USD 84 trillion. (OECD) This is probably now about USD 100 trillion.
Institutional investors, that’s pension funds, life companies and insurers, hold 41% of global market capitalisation, i.e. ordinary people with private pensions, life, motor and fire policies. A further 14% is held by the public sector, i.e. sovereign wealth funds, public and municipal employee pension funds. This compares with the total wealth of all billionaires of USD 14 trillion (Forbes 2024).

I agree about the empire, exploitation of the global south, the genocide. I feel the same pain. But I couldn't agree less on Ukraine. I think you really do not read the room ( by which I mean the Ukrainians and other East and Central Europeans), there is no way they are willing to concede anything to Russia unless they are crushed. But ignoring that, which you shouldn't, ever, a strategy of handing your potential enemy countries you don't much care about is short sighted, just remember Munich. Putin's regime had made it very clear they had considered all old eastern block their territory. They should never have been allowed to even think that.

    • @HAMISHEASTONMACKAYDAWSON

They will be crushed and are being crushed by the Russians. Ukrainians are being decimated and demoralised as they know they can't win and that it's either lose or stalemate. That is the room that needs to be read. They are fighting to be a lapdog of the US, NATO and the EU with the freedom to continue bullying ethnic Russians in Donbass and elsewhere. Ukraine is a 'regime' too which shuts off the opposition, and imprisons critics of Zelenski. Zelenski has halted the democratic process by not allowing elections, which could possibly lead to a resolution.
