  • Dive into the heartwarming world of Dutch cuisine with this delightful cooking adventure as we recreate my Oma's Groentesoep - a soul-soothing vegetable soup brimming with rich flavors. Join me on a nostalgic journey through the winter warmth of my Oma's kitchen, where the aroma of groentesoep transcends generations. Learn the secrets behind the magic broth, simmering brisket to fall-apart tenderness, and discover the art of crafting perfect meatballs and flavorful vegetables. Whether you're a seasoned chef or a kitchen enthusiast, this recipe is a testament to the enduring tradition of Dutch comfort food.
As winter blankets our surroundings with glistening snow and frigid temperatures, the desire for a steaming bowl of soup becomes irresistible. While Snert would be a tempting choice, today, we embark on the journey of recreating my Oma's groentesoep. Groentesoep, translating to vegetable soup, holds a special place in my heart as a winter comfort food. Despite its name, this soup, prepared with a rich beef broth, tiny meatballs, and an assortment of vegetables, exudes warmth that goes beyond the season.
This dish holds a special place in my heart, reminiscent of the times spent with mijn Oma en Opa in Helmond, where the aroma of this soup would embrace the kitchen. The magic lies in the simplicity of a hearty broth, mingling with the flavors of tender vegetables, perfectly seasoned miniature meatballs, and the subtle elegance of vermicelli.
Growing up, my anticipation for Oma's groentesoep reached its peak whenever I knew we were going to visit Oma and Opa in Helmond. The joy of savoring each spoonful, brimming with familial warmth, is a memory etched in time. Strikingly, when my mom made the same recipe at home, in Utrecht, it never quite tasted the same as Oma's soup. However, when my parents moved to Helmond, mysteriously, mom's soup started tasting just like Oma's. We attribute this alchemy to the water, as if the very essence of Helmond flowed through every ladle, bringing to life the authentic taste of Oma's groentesoep.
Join me on this culinary journey, as we recreate the nostalgia of Oma's kitchen, embracing the comforting embrace of groentesoep that transcends generations. Get ready to infuse your home with the heartwarming essence of Dutch tradition, one spoonful at a time.

My siblings and I fought over who got the most the meatballs so mom had to count them out to keep the peace. I am from Helmond and this was a staple at our home and Oma’s Sondagse soup.

Hello Toine. Not only was my mouth watering while you were making this soup, it is the perfect time of year to cook it. I will definitely make it soon. I baked a Kerststol at Christmas using your recipe. It turned out wonderful and it was a huge hit with my family! They especially loved the almond paste. It was the first time I’ve ever made any Dutch recipe. Again, thank you for your commitment to promoting the fabulous Dutch cuisine and culture. Thank you for sharing.

My grandmother and mom came from Drenthe where instead of meatballs, they put verse worst in there, a herbed pork sausage. Basically same recipe, vegetables and beef broth, but instead of meatballs, we'd add the sausage raw and boil it until its done, then slice it up and add it to the soup. I feel like im absolutely spoiled rotten but because this is the version I grew up it, I probably am one or the few Dutch people that feel extremely dissapointed when I get groentesoep with meatballs 😂

@@ToinesKitchen No, it wasn't that one. It was definitely a stamppot recipe. It had a sausage that was curled into a 'n' on the left, with the tips touching, and mashed potatoes with kale (I think) mixed together on the right. Thank you, though. Maybe it was another youtube chef.

🇨🇦 I would help my mom mix the ground beef and she would always do a little taste test to make sure it had enough spices in it so I started doing that too and I ate way too much raw hamburger and she would stop me and say , just a little bit, just for a taste test😮 ewwwww
