That ship would've been a perfect floating hotel and restaurant of Miami Florida. I can see her being painted back to her original colors and renamed her original name. Miami should've bought her when they had the chance. They would've had one of the best tourist attractions. Like if you agree
god how i loved this ship, ive never sailed on her but saw her 2 times and it really felt like a breakup when i heard that shes going to the scrapyard. i couldnt imagine that, i thought that such an icon would be save for hotel use or something. she wouldve loked great in manhattan in her old colors, and i bet tourists would enjoy her. now its to late.. unbelievable
I know the new liners are spectacular, but the older liners were truely graceful and magnificent. I'm a Marine Engineer and I remember having a book on this ship when I was a kid. I lived on the Texas Clipper during my maritime academy days, so maybe that's why I have a soft spot for this big iron boats. (Search "Texas Clipper Reefing & History" here on youtube.)
With 1:55 one can see as frightfully nastily the modern cuise ships are! Besides, has received on this photo the Norway already the additional superstructures were also not nice.
@FTOFB I completly agree. She should have sunk proudly, her stern back to France which first forsook her 32 years ago... you people in England maintain your ships, you are brilliant. I guess SS France wasborn the wrong place... greetings from France,
I want to apologise for the way I treated everyone with my comments of darkness and revenge. France was a beautiful Liner and when I read she was getting scrapped, I chose darkness in order to get revenge on the people who were destroying history. I am happy to tell you that I am a lot better now and I had help. Now, I am on a new and much better path. I am now working are PRESERVING the memories of the great Ocean Liners.
Mr Frederick, Are you OK? This super-crazy revenge thing isn't exactly helpful... ships get scrapped, loved ones die, bad things happen to good people... pretending you're a revenge obsessed anime character isn't going to bring the Norway back....unless you can travel in time, nothing is. You have to be grateful for what you've got... the QM2, QE2, QM1, Rotterdam and yes, even the SS US. Granted, she isn't the best ocean liner... QM and QE were nicer... but she still deserves to be saved!
Star Cruises wanted nothing but to scrap SS Norway since 1998, They let her fall into dis-repair and in 2003 Norway blew up from dis-repair. They were going to repair her due to popularity but they were lazy and sold her for scrap. She was the fastest ocean liner built but didn't challenge the SS United States due to airplanes. SS Norway was indeed great but nobody wants a steamship.
The upper deck added to France III reminds me of the blasphemous modifications made to original Yankee Stadium in 1975! Only in that case the upper deck extensions were necessary to balance the forward grandstand once the support columns were removed. In the case of the France, the only "structural" purpose they served was to ruin her ocean greyhound lines! RIP France III in any form. It's hard to see you disappear - 3:32 onward...
@backpackerable They should have both been saved. It's a shame not that many French people cared to save their last great liner. The British have the Queen Mary. The Dutch have the Rotterdam. And we Americans have the SS United States. It's a horrible tragedy that the France couldn't have been saved. She deserved a better fate.
@SuperTitanicfreak Why do you hate the Big U so much? She's a lovely ship. Maybe not as beautiful as the France but she is still a great ship that deserves to be saved. She deserves a better fate than to be left to rot or go to the scrap heap. They all deserved better fates. We must do each and everything we can to save as many of the great liners as we can for future generations to enjoy. Nationality doesn't matter, as many should be saved as possible.
@SuperTitanicfreak SS FRANCE was a beauty and so is your SS UNITED STATES. She is still alive, in bad shape but alive. You have to save her, exept the queen in California, they are all gone. NCL big boss shouldbe hung up tigh, that guy killed SS NORWAY. Greetings from France
France. Norway. I swore to avenge you & I'll get it done. I am a avenger. To follow my path, I must have power, at any price. Even if it means being consume by evil. Yes, I will avenge you France Norway even if I have to sold my flesh to the devil!
I don't help from anyone! I have made my decision. And if I die Avenging the Ocean Liners & France Norway, so be it. I will get the power anyway I can.
HA HA HA HA! I have never felt so good in my life! Imagine, my best friend is trying to save me from darkness. Well, I told him "You can try to save me from darkness, but NEVER my ships. Even if they are the source of my darkness". The demise of France Norway made me who I am today. It's too late for me to be save. I can't go back to who I was before. I won't. And save you breath about me getting help. Because I refuse to get help. (tongue slithers for effect). I love darkness.
Heh, heh, heh, heh. I'm fine. I have never felt better! So, you have indeed heard of Sasuke Uchiha. You should read my other comments when I was SuperTitanicfreak. So it's doesn't bring her back. But Norway needs a PROPER CLOSURE! So what if I snap. I made it perfectly clear, to my best friend, that I am willing to go to Hell for my Liners. I AM NOT AFRAID TO DIE FOR MY LINERS! The fool is actually trying to save me from darkness. You know what? I don't want to be save. I LOVE THE DARKNESS!
SS FRANCE NORWAY will be avenge! I promised her. I made that promise when I said this: I am an avenger. To follow my path, I must have power, at any price. Even if it means being consume by evil.
It's heresy to allow such a magnificent ship go down like that. I wonder what happened to all of her fine art? and fixtures? This business of sending great vessels such as this off to Asian yards should be illegal. I think a ship should have to be scrapped in the country where it was built. If the SS United States ever has to be scrapped, I hope they do it in Newport News, not India. At least there will be some dignity left in the process, much like an owner putting down his own dog.

I've sailed on this ship twice and both times were magical. It broke my heart when I heard they scrapped her.
I use to play with a band on the SS Norway ... it was docked in Miami. I had some great times on her.

What a beautiful ship. Wonder why they didn't fixed the broken waterboiler in the machine room.

greetings from France,
If I owned NCL I would convert the SS Norway into a floating hotel and than create the SS Norway II
@SuperTitanicfreak are u referring to the SS United States?

AMG! THIS SONG IS HAUNTING!
God,why did you scrapped a beauty ship like this?!WHY?!
Um belo navio, que deixou saudades

Someone used this same song in a video about the Lusitania sinking

Sad to see a ship get destroyed.
Since her name was SS France she should have been brought back to somewhere like Louisiana where there is French influence and turned into a hotel.
It would be nice but the company that built her. CGT or the French Line, no longer exists. If only a successor could be made.
Does any body know why the ss norway get dismantled.

My eyes.... See the darkness quite well.

On the outside at least, she was roughly 25% more beautiful than the Normandie.
I know this ship is lost off memories in my shipping life

@SuperTitanicfreak Why do u hate her u make no sence? u said u like all ocean liners and American ones but why not the SS United States???
Le France défiguré…!
I am willing to Go there for France.

@phoenix1985 Hes a troll. He wants people to rant and screech. Its how he gets off.

Terrible end...
Reinhard W. Mummert Yes it was, but NCL did the right thing.
