- Rookie Drew Thorpe continued to demonstrate why he’s a highly rated prospect in tonight's game against the Colorado Rockies. Following a fantastic six-inning outing against the Tigers on June 22nd, in which he threw five strikeouts with no runs allowed, Thorpe made his first start as a White Sox at home. The right-hander pitched well with solid support from the bullpen and picked up his second career win.
The Sox struck first, scoring a run in the bottom of the 2nd as Andrew Vaughn hit his 15th double of the year, followed by Paul DeJong and Nicky Lopez (RBI) both smacking singles plating Vaughn. The Sox went up 1-0 into the top of the 3rd.
While Thorpe handled the mound, the defense stepped up, including a catch by Lenyn Sosa in foul territory to retire Michael Toglia in the top of the 5th.
Thorpe retired 16 straight batters before giving up a walk to Sam Hilliard. Colorado’s Brenton Doyle hit a 2-run home run, his 7th of the year, putting the Rockies ahead 2-0 in the 6th inning. Thorpe ended his night after 6 innings, tossing 4 strikeouts and allowing 2 hits and 2 earned runs.
In the bottom of the 6th, the White Sox offense came alive. Luis Robert Jr. started the half-inning off with a double, Eloy Jiménez walked, and Andrew Vaughn walked to load the bases. Paul DeJong singled, scoring Robert Jr. and tying the game, ending Rockies pitcher Dakota Hudson’s night.
With the bases loaded, Korey Lee hit a ground-out RBI, giving the White Sox a 3-2 lead. After an intentional walk to pinch hitter Gavin Sheets, who was then replaced by Danny Mendick on the bases, Tommy Pham knocked in two more runs, putting the White Sox up 5-2.
The Rockies tacked on another run with a home run by Michael Toglia, his 9th of the season, off Tanner Banks. Banks finished the 7th without letting up another run in the inning.
John Brebbia made his 35th appearance of the season, holding off the Rockies after a leadoff walk as the Sox led 5-3 heading into the 8th.
Michael Kopech came in to close things out, earning his 7th save of the season as the Sox took game one of a 3-game series.
The White Sox defeated the Colorado Rockies, 5-3, at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois on June 28, 2024.

Seems impossible to build a team around them. Ridiculous.
