- In this video we head to Tombstone, AZ the home of the famous OK Corral shootout for our bikepacking adventure. This was the mid March, 2021, and we did NOT expect to encounter a freak snowstorm during our trip. I sure appreciate my crazy buddies who are willing to explore this great state and adventure with me. Have you ever been bikepacking? What's holding you back from going on your first bikepacking trip?

Wow. I’m a competitive xc & enduro racer that’s been riding Mtb for 3 decades…and some of the stuff I just watched you guys clean on LOADED bikes humbles me! Utmost respect brothers! Don’t know if the whole bike world can even fully appreciate you, but wow…❤
Thanks for the kind words. We like to goof around and challenge each other when we go bikepacking too.
Obviously Cody isn't human... he slathers the ketchup all over his french fries instead of dipping them like a normal human!
I missed seeing your bike packing adventures! Thanks for sharing this amazing journey, you guys are so positive and upbeat (as always), really well done all of you!
I enjoyed your laughs just like if I was there having fun with y'all, lol! I loved it how it went dark on you guys while putting up the tent, 😂
100% agree with both "plus tires are great for bikepacking" and "get a beater". My bikepacking bike is a 2013 Surly Pugsley that I converted to 29+ and it is *perfect*. I splurged on wheels and am glad I did, but everything on the bike is indestructible and it'll roll through nearly anything I hit when bikepacking.
What wheels did you get?
@@BrentonCollas had my friend (and best wheelbuilder I know) lace up a pair of Rabbit Holes, with a White Industries rear hub and a Schmidt dynamo front. Tied & soldered, natch :) Totally transformed the bike.
@@MoisheLettvin lol, I was looking for a lighter weight set of wheels to get away from my stock rabbit holes. Not sure if I'll use 3"tyres for the Krampus when they wear out...
Dude you have the best attitude
This area was home to me in the late '90s. It is just as majestic as it looks. I really appreciate the video. I am 79, and there is no way I could do something like this. So, it is great to see you guys do it.
Love your bike packing trips. Great content! I’m very jealous of your trails.
I've always felt like it's not an adventure unless you're pushing your bike at some point haha. Looks like it was a fun trip!
Really cool episode! Looked like a fun adventure
Look at them big ol' bars.
A good PT will do wonders. Sorry about the knee issues. I had to have mine sorted out last year. I went 30 miles to 2 over night and it took 3-4 months to get it all sorted. Definitely get into a good PT sooner than later.
Cody is a hero of mine. I love his riding style and attitude 👌🏾
He's a great guy
Glad you all survived looks like a semi hard route you do such a great job on recording your adventures LOVE it. THNX
What a great trip!! Thanks for sharing it with us!
This was fun to watch!!! Your adventure/bike packing trips are some some of your best content!!! Thanks Steve really enjoyed it!!
Thanks Shaun. Unfortunately they don't get many views and end up hurting my channel, but I love documenting this style of adventure.
Cody is a monster!!... Awesome trip guys!!... Good mix of torture/adventure/party!! 😎👍🏾
Steve, I appreciate the content as always. I'm sure you have a long queue of videos to do, but one I think folks might be interested in is your reasons for liking 29+ tires.
I talk about it quite a bit in my Maniak videos
Epic! loving this
Wow, memories galore! I've been on Gleeson road many times and had an IT customer over in Sunsites/Pearce. I was surprised to see that Gleeson road was paved now. Of course it's been over 20 years since I was there. But ghost town trail looked like it was frozen in time. And the Stronghold looked pretty much the same too. I was more of a hiker back then but I never hiked that trail. I wish now that I had. Awesome vid!

What an adventure!!! Love it!!
Outdoor Research Versaliner Sensor Gloves - great gloves for this kind of weather. I live in the PNW and these are my main pair during winter season
Thanks for the tip
Great trip!
That was fun. More of these types of videos!
it's too bad these are my least-popular videos, because I love making them.
Looks like so much fun. Maybe I'll be able to get out for a trip like this one day.
Do it! Highly recommended.
fuaaaa Cody no es humano es una maquina del pedal!! great video, thx Hardtail Party
Love these bike packing vids but ain't no way I would go in that sort of weather. Give me summer over icy winter snow any day of the week.
Literally had this route planned for this upcoming weekend. Thanks for the beta!
Glad it helps!
Camping with the Top Gear crew.
When I go to a new bike my knees will generally hurt do to bike fit . It can take me as much as 12 rides to sort it out making adjustments. Sometimes those adjustments are small in nature . With you riding so many bikes for review I guess it can be a challenge to get that fit for your body type and riding
Recommend icing down your knees after every ride with ice packs . Hopefully you can get it figured out
Thanks for taking us along on your adventure! One day I hope to give bikepacking a shot.
That's great to hear. I was hoping this would inspire people to get out and try it.
Haha, you guys are nuts, but I want to do this now 🤣
Looks like silca allen keys... I have a set and they are amazing. Its the only 2.5mm hex i trust. Great video!
Wow, atleast you should've brought a tarp, i always bring that and was able to have cover backpacking on Mt Graham and the catalinas, rincons, Huachucas and santa ritas.
You need a rocket ratchet. They're so much faster than using regular alen keys. Especially in tight spaces
I love the ratchet rocket, it's my main multitool, but it ratchet doesn't have a 2.5mm bit. You have to use the end of the chain breaker, which is a major pain
From my touring experience, the best rack is always one that bolts directly to the frame. Rack mounts are much less common than the used to be and I think the should be included on more steal and aluminum hardtails. Especially hardtails marketed towards bike packing
great video, I'm a fair weather biker, think I would have turned around on this ride before getting to the dirt.
Great trip. I'd hate to try riding some of the more technical stuff on a fully loaded bike.
I'd have walked many of those gnarly climbing sections; smoother and probably faster progress. Super-technical riding is not my cup of tea.
That’s a mountain bell machine!
Awesome video Steve! Bikepacking has been on my radar for quite some time. Thanks for the motivation! Hope your knee gets well and btw, what gloves were you wearing?
I want to setup a steel hardtail for bikepacking, looks killer!
Do It! I'm right there with you on that.
It's a good way to go. Bikepacking on a FS is a bit of a pain.
Check out the Surly Karate Monkey; versatile persona. It's essentially a trail-bike that can fit 29+ or 27.5+ rims and bikepack nicely; just ditch the stock Dirt Wizards and run Vittorias or Schwalbes. The stockers suck; heavy/dead feel and not tubeless-ready. Vittoria Martello 27.5 x 2.8 on the front & an Agarro 27.5 x 2.6 out back or Agarros front and rear. The Vittoria Mezcals are also good for Bikepacking and a shade lighter/faster rolling (a XC tire technically). Consider a Selle Atómica saddle (get the Saddle Sauce and waterproof cover if you did get said saddle); super comfy and will last near forever if properly taken care of. You just change the skin if it wears out. It might just be the Last saddle you'll ever need to buy. Consider the Moloko bars too, great for long rides or Bikepacking; also, they're steel and dampen the trail-shock. Tape the horns; comfy and better grip there. Consider downsizing the front to a 28t oval; smoother cadence and more torque/gear range when combined with the stock group-set.
Lastly, before I start to write a novel, consider running traditional front and rear racks. What the fashionistas would have you run barely holds anything(!). You can run mini paniers up front, stuff on top of the front rack, mid-sized paniers/top box in the rear, and stuff on the forks via the Salsa Anything Racks/EXP Anything Sacks (or bags; forget exact name).
Cody still on the ss- he's committed!
Awesome, but you should have went to North Dakota, the weather was nicer:)
Comparing the effect of weight distribution on handling while bikepacking could make an interesting video, like what kind of trails you can clear with different setups. The weight on the rack seems to be relatively far back, is that awkward on slow tech? I tend to put the heavier things in a frame bag, big water bottle under the down tube like you, a not too big seat pack and a firmly packed 8or 10 liter drybag on the bars, no accessory bag on top of it but might have stem bags. This doesn't change the handling that much, just heavier than a bike with no gear on it, but there's also less space than what you have there.
You must have kicked the Covid! Yay! Also, you and your friends are serious hardmen riding in the snow. I made it riding road for 8 years without being hit by a car. Then I moved to Texas. Took less than a year to get hit. I have shifted enphasis to gravel roads and now to mountain biking!
Oh, and the Tumbleweed T Rack is the best I have ever used!
This was filmed over a year and a half ago sadly.
Also, I told my wife that Hardtail Party is such a serious baller on a bike, AND about the nicest guy in cycling. I wrote to 5Dev and told them that I am going to put their crankset on my new bike because of your review. They wrote back and said that they love you at 5Dev!
@@randallsmith7885 Thanks Randall. The guys at 5DEV are awesome. I really appreciate you writing that in to them, that helps so much.
Your knee pain sounds like when I was having IT band issues. Definitely don’t wait on talking to someone, but go get a foam roller if you don’t already have one.
I've got all sorts of torture devices. :) This one isn't it band, but I'm still working to track it down.
Did you ride the loop clockwise or CCW? Great stuff, inspiring me to make some plans...
CCW
I thought that you were going to take the Sherpa ti.
This was filmed long before I got the Sherpa ti+
Is that a Stages computer?
Yes, it was awful on this trip. VERY buggy.
People always say panniers bad for singletrack. Seems you have proven them wrong on some tight stuff. I've found the same, no issues.
I LOVE panniers. I think they're one of the best ways to carry stuff on a bike.
would love to know what bar ends and rear hub cody uses....anyone know?
cody has ergon bar ends (they're OLD and came with some grips that he no longer has). He normally rides nukeproof hzn v2 wheels, but he has a stans arch laced to a hope pro 4 on this bike.
@@hardtailparty thanks so much. great channel
Have you checked out a company here in the UK called Pace cycles.......part of UK mtb history and I think you might like them
@@johnw2318 yes, I've reached out to them a handful of times. No luck getting a pace in for review.
@@hardtailparty thats a shame
No pogies?
Not in arizona
Great Trip! We need to have another crazy adventure in the desert. 🚵♂🚵♂🚵♂
Agreed!
Thanks for the content, really enjoyed it 👍 Curious if you would take the Sherpa TI + on the next bike packing trip as it would be a fantastic long term review of the bike if so. Also im absolutely loving Arizona, the more i see of the place the more i want to go there one day. Beautiful place, it really is. 🚵♂👍
Great question. I go into more detail on this with me patrons. Regarding the Sherpa ti +, it depends on the trail. For gravel roads and less technical terrain, the Sherpa ti+ would be great. For most of this route it would be great, but the technical stuff would be a handful on that bike.
@@hardtailparty I wonder if Stanton plan on making the Sherpa + in steel too, would be great to see the difference between the two bikes if so!!............... Thx again for the content ✌
@@johnster187 see my Sherpa steel vs Sherpa ti video, I'm sure they'd be quite similar to that.
