I started watching Dr Peterson's lectures a couple of months ago and have already changed my daily behaviour quite a lot. The 2 ideas that I'm trying to apply -gradually, since the change is not easy at all- are telling the truth and everything you do (or don't do) matters. Still a long way to go for me but I have understood that's the way I need to go in life. Jordan Peterson is a gift to the world

How the fuck did you not figure that out yourself.. bollussa, what "speaking your truth" means is something Peterson goes over in several videos. It not what people normally mean by "telling the truth". its more about not staying silent when you have something to say and staying true to yourself as a being.

How am I procrastinating? Please explain. Procrastination is putting off doing what you know you must do. The assumption being, of course, that you already know what you should be doing. That you have the knowledge needed to accomplish the task. But learning, listening, at the feet of a master? Learning something that enlightens you? How is that procrastinating? You are wrong, sir.

I spent almost eight years in growing nihilism and the worst thing was I honestly thought there was no alternative since "the world's bad, life is meaningless" used to seem the only truth to me. I remember exactly how I got into Peterson's lectures and self-help. I woke up once in the morning and figured out the root cause of my problems were fear and lack of self esteem (that's aside from a lack of a compelling goal I used to think I was entitled to). So I googled self esteem on youtube and discovered the Actualized channel, and then Peterson's lectures. Thank God it didn't take me another eight years....

I've avoided doing the things I need. It clicked last year that I was not satisfied with my current job and where I am. I started working on videography to switch careers. But after coming across Dr. Peterson, I realized how I wasn't doing enough to hit my goal. I was slacking off, and doing things to satisfy me right now, rather then work for the future. I've since cut back on my video game playing dramatically, it frees up a lot of time. Now, I've built a website, have some video experience and references, got an internship in New York City, and am currently in talks with filming games for a Rugby league. Dr. Peterson helped me realize what I needed to do.

Start exercising and finding trouble. Then meaning won't become a question anymore. The only meaningful times in your life are the times in which you don't think about because you're having too much fun, or you do such good work that you create meaning. Meaning is to be created, not found. It's a good thing! Try it. Choose to live blissfully and you *will* quite quickly if you do it in earnest. Every moment is new. Embrace the suffering and find meaning beyond it.

I love Jordan but he has admitted on numerous occasions that he struggles with sitting down and doing nothing (stopping to smell the roses) and also that he struggles with finding a state of happiness. He is hyper-productive and always working, and this video reflects that mindset. I agree that doing nothing is bad, but measuring you time off in $'s and feeling bad for not working and making money constantly isnt imho a positive state either, and most people simply arent like that. I enjoy being productive, and I also enjoy doing nothing/playing video games/a siesta in the park etc etc. It is part of what makes life special. Doing nothing and just enjoying your existence is one of modern society's biggest luxuries and shouldnt be seen as "wasting time". It would make me miserable to constantly feel like I need to do something productive and make money, and Ill happily be a bit poorer to be able to do so. Moderation/balance is key.

Yeah, he's kind of a workaholic.
I mean, he had like 5 jobs at the same time for most of his life.
That's certainly a unique lifestyle, with a lot of work that has to be done basically *all* the time. I don't know when it was the last time he took a day off and did 'relaxation only'. Before he had his detox I mean, which was no 'free choice' either, more like an inevitable, necessary break.
He is hyperproductive and he is a genius (roughly speaking). But it still inspires me, even though I know I'll never work that much. That's ok. I'll do my best. And I'm a lot _less_ lazy now than I used to be, that's for sure.

I struggle with the same, but as Professor Peterson has mentioned in other lectures, a great way to motivate yourself is three fold. 1) Create for yourself a "hell" to run away from. Envision a version of yourself in the future where you fall prey to all of your weaknesses and vices. Having a crappy job for a while can instill this awareness and desire to avoid a future "hell". WRITE THESE THOUGHTS DOWN (don't concern yourself with spelling or grammar). 2) Create for yourself a "heaven" to pursue or run towards. Envision what your future could be like if you worked hard to fo what is right and act in a truthful manner and pursue your goals (in the next 6 mo. , 1 years, 5 years). Also WRITE THIS OUT! 3) Remind yourself that everything you do matters. By bearing responsibility you create purpose and meaning for yourself. If you are having trouble in fixing your whole life, try to create order by being conscientous about smaller problems that you can tangibly fix. And work up from the motivation of acconplishing smaller tasks from start to conpletion. Remind yourself that life is suffering. Everything meaningful is typically hard (because it requires responsibility). Sleep well, eat well, those are the first things to do to slay depression and lack of energy. Don't try to fix the world, fix yourself first and getting your own life in order. By doing so you will be on the best path to creating purpose and meaningfulness in your sphere of influence.
None the above are my own original ideas, all from Professor Peterson or other sources. I wish you well.

While trying to figure the same thing out for myself I came across some theories that claimed being highly intelligent and having high potential can actually work against us in terms of laziness and procrastination. Being smart enough to not have to do as much work and at the last minute becomes a destructive habit.

I have come to realize, maybe because of Dr. Peterson, maybe because of introspective thinking which may or may not have been aided by psychedelics and meditation, that the key to be successful in whatever you're doing is to really do it. I think I am at a turning point in my life where I realize that I have been living my life just to "get by", not taking my job or school seriously while hoping that I will be successful in life somehow. I realize that being fully committed to things, and doing them to the best of my abilities would offer greater fulfillment and results.

@@mbradford1206 because Mother Nature follows the "just good enough" rule in its creation. It also follows the minimum effort(resources), maximum gain rule. Maybe people should stop mistaking taking a rest for being lazy. If you overrun your systems early, you`re done. If you listen to people who lived over 100 years, they always say that they took things easy, had a lough and enjoyed their lives. People just need to stop making things worse and that`s already good enough. We do not need to be super efficient robots on tight schedules, we need to be allowed to make mistakes, as a large number of great inventions came to existence just because of mistakes. Maybe procrastination can be seen as one of those mistakes? Maybe procrastination is just an extra reflection time? Just pace yourself if you`re here for a marathon rather than a sprint.

Even though I feel like I did not work hard enough since I made a decision to turn my dreams into reality, I am still seeing a huge difference between where I am and where I would have been without working on my dreams.
I have been wondering about what my full potential is for a while and then decided to just work on making it real every single day. I don't want to give up. Tomorrow I will do an hour and a half. I plan on slowly rising the amount of time spent on my dreams to avoid a fast burnout. Maybe I can go even to 20 or so hours a week. More means no free time. If I wouldn't be able to manage that much, I can also go with a lot less and still accomplish a lot. Just imagine how much can you accomplish with just 6 or 7 hours a week of work for 5 years! @@zoopla710The change 'you' require to become the person you want to be. I'm afraid of it too, but it's time... I'll start to write down an action plan where I face all my responsibility-related nightmares

I was feeling awful, trying to motivate myself, kind of depressed...then I opened this video and part of the way in, I was like, “I’m getting up and doing the dishes and laundry.” I looked at the timestamp of the video: I was only about 5 minutes in. I am just amazed.

He made a comment at 6:50 about us peeking at 9 billion and then having a quick decline. Does anyone know why he said this or have any of his other videos on maybe him answering this thought?

As societies advance birth rates decline, a good sign for a well developed country is a declining or at least stable population. So I suppose he would assert that as we approach 9 billion people, enough of the world would be advanced that the massive population growth we see from developing countries like China and India would rapidly slow down and maybe even reverse.

There has been a consensus for about two decades that will be the case, but it is difficult to estimate and projections vary between 6 and 12 billion depending on the assumptions made. Certainly birth rates have dropped dramatically in places as they become more developed (e.g. Iran and Bangladesh), but others remain high (e.g. Africa) though could drop as similar development occurs there. It raises some interesting social issues to have a declining population and a shrinking economy. We haven't seen that since after the Black Death in Europe. While it was devastating it changed the whole social landscape. Housing became plentiful and labour was in short supply so commanded more power. Feudalism became untenable and the development of modern societies became possible in Europe. Future population decline is rarely talked about but is a fascinating area, especially if you are young enough to likely see it take place.

Boaty McBoatface There is a common belief, in Western society, at least, that the world can only hold so many people before we see a collapse. This idea dates back centuries, and the estimated number is always being moved. The biggest problem with this thinking is that the defining characteristic of humans is innovation. We are always becoming more efficient in the industries of agriculture and energy production.

We underestimate the old. Many are actually very functional until quite late in their lives. Plus increasing robotisation enables greater production with minimal human input of any sort. There is however a disturbing growth in ageism; blaming older generations for all sorts of things, and we're not far from them being depicted as 'oppressors of the young'. Given the right (wrong) social conditions that could lead to people suggesting a 'final solution' for the elderly. Ironically by about 2050 the elderly would be today's 20 somethings.

And sometimes people lack the ability to change, therefore they can not to fix their chaos. We all know that people got great potentials, how to utilize it is the big problem.
