    Fire Pit, Fire Pit, Fire Pit..... But seriously, great advice as always. I mulch when the tempts start to drop in Winter to insulate all the plants and add a boost in spring. Then I will add chicken manure pellets about every 4-6 weeks throughout the growing season. I also occasionally top up with a liquid sea weed spray when I remember. It's really about finding a balance that you can afford and what your plants actually need. But I'm almost out of chicken manure pellets, so I think I'll give this product a go.

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Год назад +1

      Haha yes, if I wasn't so shattered today I would have loved to have spent a few hours on it but life is busy currently. Still aiming for the vids starting late May though so not long now! It sounds like you pretty much do the same as me then, now I've got most plants in the ground and they're settling in, I can definitely be more efficient and laid back with the feeding than when I had a huge collection of potted plants! I generally see these kind of products as interchangeable and if you see a good buy of any chicken manure pellets, 6X, Growmore etc it's worth getting it!

    Only have pots would love if you could include plants for pots

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Год назад +1

      Hi Maxine, you could definitely use it for pots too along with mulching the tops of larger pots with farmyard manure! For pots in summer I mainly use the soluble feeds, the main thing with pots though is that you have to be more consistent with the feeding, whereas in the ground, you can be more efficient (/lazy!). For palms in pots, I'd go with Palm Focus, for bananas, cannas and gingers etc, a strong cocktail of liquid seaweed / Tomorite / Chempak Number 2 / Miracle Gro etc, or any combination of those every couple of weeks from May-August will definitely get the most out of them!

    Thanks George, have ordered a bag, weirdly 2 bags are more than 2x£12.80 so they’re on to you 🤣 I did need to see you wafting the stuff around as otherwise I’d have been piling it high and digging it in #novice. I’ll pop a little bit around my Tetrapanax, it’s still a lifeless 5ft high chunky stick but hoping for some growth soon after this next cold spell early next week perhaps. Or maybe I should leave it to gently come round, not give it some planty red bull! My dogs are going to love the scent by the sounds of it 🤣 Take care, happy weekend to you and the family

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Год назад

      Hi Emma, yes I did notice that and mentioned it in one of my sections for this vid that I cut out - you have to add multiples of one bag rather than choosing 2, 3 etc and it gets round it. Funny! My Tetrapanax are the same too but looking at Facebook, other peoples are starting to move so hopefully not too long before we see some life (hopefully!). Planty red bull haha, that's definitely the video title I should have gone with! Remi loves the smell of it here, I have to keep him away from it when I'm putting it down otherwise he'd hoover it up, yuck... Thanks, I hope you have a great weekend too!

    Great video, great advice. I've been using 6x on my garden for over 20 years, especially fruit and veg, it's really good stuff. Ideal for use when planting out also. Worthwhile mentioning you're displaying the new packaging, the old one was always plain orange. It's very concentrated so less is more. If you're allergic to feathers as I am, you may find the odd chicken feather so gloves are a must and whilst the smell is good and organic you may want to use a face covering.

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Год назад +1

      Thanks Paul, yes, I’m not too precise as you can see but a bit of slow release organic matter will drip through and be ready for them in May when they want it. I don’t go too nitrogen heavy with palms but nothing wrong with a sprinkle to keep the soil rich and get them greening up!

    You mentioned you like to bury all your palm 🌴 roots. I accidentally buried one of my Jubaes leaf bases that was pointing downwards diagonally. I don’t think it will be a problem. A lot of gardeners do expose some roots. By the way, do you work in the nursery trade?

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Год назад +1

      I like to have the roots covered with soil, yes, I generally like to keep the soil level the same as what they were in the pots but I wouldn't worry about an odd leaf base as that'll fall off eventually anyway. I've not seen any gardeners expose roots but perhaps it's just not something done over here - what are the reasons for it? I don't, no, otherwise I could have probably saved money that way haha

    When you say a rich nitrogen feed for the bananas what do you recommend?

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Год назад

      Hi, pretty much anything works, this 6x works great along with farmyard manure to improve the soil. Then use miracle grow, chicken manure pellets, liquid seaweed etc through the summer to top up. Chempak 2 is also great but if using a high nitrogen grass feed then check it doesn't contain weed killer.

    I always thought the guidance was you mulched in April. Be interested to hear people's opinions on Autum or Spring mulching

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Год назад +1

      Any time from Autumn through to Spring is good with me. I always direct compost the old stems and leaves in Autumn but as for the manure, I personally just find it easier to do it when there's little growth in the garden, I'm not messing things up spreading it around and it's got plenty of time to settle in before I plant into it and plants are pushing up through it. I guess doing it at the back end of the year has the added benefit of protecting roots and rhizomes from prolonged freezes, doing it in spring helps to lock in the moisture and keep down weeds plus give the garden a neat look, so there's pros and cons really. Personally I'd say as long as you're using the right stuff and giving it a good thick layer, the 'how' is more important than the 'when' but whatever works for other people isn't necessarily wrong or the only way.

    Hi george is your Gunnera a true Manicata or a Tinctoria, be honest!!

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Год назад +1

      Hi Dec and I was waiting for the whole hybrid saga to develop this year haha! It's also been my go to comment whenever I've been asked for IDs as there's so many variations and carryovers between the two presumed sorts here prior to last year. Mine are definitely not tinctoria but as for the whole hybrid issue, without a specific test, who knows what makes each plant up. What I would say though, is that mine is a direct division from one of the oldest and biggest Gunnera 'manicata' clumps in the North of England so if it grows up to be like those, it will be the coolest plant in my garden - whatever it's called!

    Is there any danger of overfeeding?

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Год назад

      Hi Ted, potentially yes, if you put loads on and kept repeating it every week. Personally I go steady with the hardy exotics that have to grow tough and be in the ground all year (mainly evergreen), then you can get away with more for the bigger leaves like Musa basjoo and Ensete etc. I wouldn't suggest overfeeding but equally I don't have an issue with not being precise.
