The big part of the deadlift that many might have not noticed that makes it more impressive is that he’s doing that weight double over hand with out chalk or straps . Good stuff man
this is awesome, but please god someone stop mike before he demolishes his back. trying to clean 165 on his first ever session? trying to deadlift 215 with a rounded back? made me cringe. Also holy hell Rude is strong.
I don't know Ritchies obviously a world class athlete, but I think Mike did pretty well holding 250w and then going up 20w each 10 seconds on a bike holy fuck that sounds brutal !
That's a great comment. It's important to remember that Mike does review bikes for a living, he's nowhere near a casual rider. This year he came 30th in the BC Bike Race, which is a Pro level field.
Such a cool series. This ones the best so far. Richie is a monster. I just nearly ate a whole tombstone while laying on couch watching a movie too....i feel humbled lol
I thought deadlift started as a leg press and switched to hinge as the bar passed the knee? That said, clean to front squat would have been a better choice. Oh and some basic cues for Mike would have helped. You can tell he doesnt even lift bro.
True, but compared to many pro athletes he is average. I've been saying explosive cycling like Enduro and DH need a more athletic/muscle frame than the traditional cyclist body
I liked his watt test one the erg (who calls it an "E. R. G." btw?) but what's up with the clean and press as one of, "the two most important power strength exercises"? I like the clean portion but a vertical pressing movement? How is that applicable to riding a bike? Also, how is some kind of a squatting movement not in his top two? Todd seems to be very successful and whatever he's doing seems to work but as a life long S&C coach, the stuff he did in the weight room seems a bit bizarre. Are there any more in depth interviews with Todd? I realize this might be lacking a lot of context.
Yeah I agree. No squat? Clean & Press is nonsense for a biker. Good for general conditioning and core as well as speed work, but it's a performance exercise, not a strength exercise, so it's little more than a novelty at the best of times. For a biker... odd choice. Just watched a video yesterday with Dr Isratel. He laid it out plain - main exercises for quads are high bar back squat, front squat, hack squat. The only thing I can think of might be if he gets his quad work from functional cycling and therefore he keeps squats as a secondary tier exercise. Might explain it, but I certainly wouldn't recommend that.
A vertical clean and press guarantees every muscle group in the kinetic chain under that bar will be firing and the coordination of getting a weight from floor to overhead in a powerful way is great for athletic development. The first third of the movement massive posterior chain contribtution from hip extensors, lats dorsi etc (very relevant to mtb.) Overhead the rotator-cuff is firing ++. How would that not benefit an EWS racer? If that isn't enough then consider how and over the bars situation develops. By doing this if Richie is adding a little insurance policy that if he does go over the bars it may be the difference between walking away and being laid up for a while.
Richie is obviously a beast, but kinda surprised he isn't lifting heavier than 355x4 on DL. Just looking at him I would figure he could do 455+ 1 rep max pretty easy. Not that lifting heavier would make him a better mtn bike racer by any means. His wattage on the C2 erg is good.
He didnt look like he was struggling too much, which makes sense because why risk injury fot a bragging rights video, so i wouldnt be suprised that if he pushed, he could get much higher.
You do bench press motions on the bike all the time. It's the whole row/anti-row concept. Doesn't mean you have to do a traditional bench press in order to get stronger there. Your feet up on a bench and your hands on an exercise ball. Those bodyweight push-ups will make you strong.
Good exercise, poor form. Also, bench press is a compound movement, not isolation. When done correctly it will work many different muscles that will in fact help you on a bike.
Same here, it's a good feeling, even though he's doing it at a far lower body fat percentage than I am! I'd be curious to see which pro DH or Enduro guy has the highest one rep max deadlift. I'm sure Richie is up there. Dude is pretty solid.
I love it, very good video! But Richie is starting to look more like a crossfit competitor than MTB racer.....please don't take it the wrong way guys! I am not a hater or trying to slag anyone off, just all that mass get's in the way (not as agile on the bike and can't keep high BPMs for long). I think that Richie is great racer and real champ!!! Can't wait to see more videos.
Late reply but I totally agree. You can't help think that his size has resulted in a lot more mechanicals (mainly punctures) than his competitors. A lighter rider is lighter on his gear which is super important in 2 days enduro events.
That's ok, life is more nuanced than an over-simplistic and frankly childish binary division between haters and fan boys. You make an important point. Could Richie be more successful as a lighter rider?
ok thats kinda interesting, not meant in a negative way, rich is still one of the strongest MTB pros out there, but a 160 kg deadlift for 4 is not that much at all, I can do that for 2-3 (depends on how im feeling, during a training week of course) and I'm a 18 year old who's been training weights for 6 months, and ill be able to do that in a month or two, not a seasoned pro in their prime (and on steroids even, sorry but that does play a part). Rowing too, though I don't know how long I can hold my max, I do know I can produce 500w for 1.5 min, so similar to him. idk about the biking though
Yeah, didn't he get banned for performance enhancing drugs? Having said that he was probably doing what 90% of the competitors do. Let's be honest about it.
Richie is great, he's so quite and composed, motivated, dedicated and such a lovely guy.
The big part of the deadlift that many might have not noticed that makes it more impressive is that he’s doing that weight double over hand with out chalk or straps . Good stuff man
He's a beast for sure!
Hook grip not double overhand
Also, no belt!
Should Mike really have attempted the heavy dead with shit form? Good way to mess yourself up bad. Herniated disc anyone?
I witnessed Eric Kuperstein deadlift 529 at 132lb.. double overhand grip. Ive pulled 573 at 165 bw ,but could only hold 350 overhand.
Richie chasin' the gym babes at 2:28
Remi is a babe for sure
i thought the same thing lmao
Humbled for a second time
I request more, Mike's still pretty arrogant 😉 he needs more therapy and we need more episodes of this! I love it!
Not sure how much good that would do...
There's only one way to find out... 😄
this is awesome, but please god someone stop mike before he demolishes his back. trying to clean 165 on his first ever session? trying to deadlift 215 with a rounded back? made me cringe. Also holy hell Rude is strong.
That trainer sucks so much
"I'm good at failure" me too...
Love this series...
Cheers Steve - there's more in the works. The next one we are particularly excited about...
I don't know Ritchies obviously a world class athlete, but I think Mike did pretty well holding 250w and then going up 20w each 10 seconds on a bike holy fuck that sounds brutal !

Would be interesting to know what his w/kg ratio is. Would put things in better relation ;)
Oh man, it's like the name of my channel is perfect for this video.
More Pinkbike videos please!!! these are great!.
On it!
Riche seems like a nice dude. Thanks for the episode.
I am curious to know about PED In men’s and women’s cycling/cross country/EWS/DH/Cyclocross, etc.
How much does Richie weigh? (Serious question - he's got tons of muscle mass)
95kgs is the word on the street.
It has been far too long since I have seen Mike Levy get embarrassed by professional athletes, where is episode 3 of Humbled?! These are great!
It is like the Hulk vs mortals. Pros vs Joes.
Such a cool series. This ones the best so far. Richie is a monster. I just nearly ate a whole tombstone while laying on couch watching a movie too....i feel humbled lol
There were 2 choices of movement and both were a hinge, I’d suggest a balanced approach to add a squat.
I thought deadlift started as a leg press and switched to hinge as the bar passed the knee? That said, clean to front squat would have been a better choice. Oh and some basic cues for Mike would have helped. You can tell he doesnt even lift bro.
Do they test at world and ews pro events? If not they should! Betcha we all would be surprised!
Glad I’m watching this before college begins for me.
At 4:09 on the left you can see what matter the most.
Sharp eyes.
😏🍑
Top level EWS is one of the most physically demanding sports there is. MAD respect
The trainer just says full body for everything 😂😂
His explanation of the “clean-press” was the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. Embarrassing
Compared to the average DH/Enduro racer Richie is still pretty muscular.
True, but compared to many pro athletes he is average. I've been saying explosive cycling like Enduro and DH need a more athletic/muscle frame than the traditional cyclist body
We need more of this when Mike comes back from his long ass vacation
Is that Remi Gauvin on the left in 3:00 ??
Yes it is.

@@vinniemmmm dude, you have no fucking clue what you’re talking about.
Rude is strong as an ox, I used to lift and that's a lot of weight.
4:58 richie looks like he bout to kill the cameraman

How does one find max watts on a rower? Not super clear. Thanks!
switch the PM to show watts instead of split time - make a note of the highest you can get it to
Is Richie Rude even his real name or did he make it up for shredding?
It's his real name! Also his dad's name, but he goes by Rich Rude instead thus why Richie is...err....Richie.
Ha! I beat Richie on the bike erg test. Not even close though when it comes to strength. That guy is a machine.
Was he tired, just rude, or does he really have the personality of a lamp post?
You definitely are one of them.
Good to know
Mike is hilarious! I love these!
This is a bit silly. Why would you let Mike even try to deadlift at Richies best? You want to injure him?
Herniated Disc Studios located somewhere in downtown Squamish?
how much does richi weight ?
Funny how Richie is such a shy guy.
great video!
Richie is a man of few words
Damn son...
Todd, it is so sad that you are letting this guy to hurt himself.
You do bench press motions on the bike all the time. It's the whole row/anti-row concept.

BEAST!
Richi Damm Smile some!!!!!
Shouldn't have eaten all those doughnuts mate
iron man vs cyclist
@10:27 Omg the classic American dap and pound hahahahaha. Typical as well, is going way too hard on the pound.
Good exercise, poor form. Also, bench press is a compound movement, not isolation. When done correctly it will work many different muscles that will in fact help you on a bike.
This guys about as funny as a kick in the balls.
Richie's deadlift form is lacking i must confess
At least I’ll always have a stronger raw deadlift than richie rude, being so fast on a mtb is overrated 😂😔😭
Same here, it's a good feeling, even though he's doing it at a far lower body fat percentage than I am! I'd be curious to see which pro DH or Enduro guy has the highest one rep max deadlift. I'm sure Richie is up there. Dude is pretty solid.
Mike needs to be a bit more humble
Who knows, maybe after 15 episodes we'll get there :)
I love it, very good video! But Richie is starting to look more like a crossfit competitor than MTB racer.....please don't take it the wrong way guys! ozkozaoz I guess youre wrong considering he just won the overall this weekend!!!
Late reply but I totally agree. You can't help think that his size has resulted in a lot more mechanicals (mainly punctures) than his competitors. A lighter rider is lighter on his gear which is super important in 2 days enduro events.
What about his line choice and how much inertia he generates on the trail?
That's ok, life is more nuanced than an over-simplistic and frankly childish binary division between haters and fan boys. You make an important point. Could Richie be more successful as a lighter rider?
Dead-Lift. Lol. Deaddashlift....
ok thats kinda interesting, not meant in a negative way, rich is still one of the strongest MTB pros out there, but a 160 kg deadlift for 4 is not that much at all, I can do that for 2-3 (depends on how im feeling, during a training week of course) and I'm a 18 year old who's been training weights for 6 months, and ill be able to do that in a month or two, not a seasoned pro in their prime (and on steroids even, sorry but that does play a part). 34% more watts and 100% less personality!
Alvaro Nim he is representing a brand and the sport. Least he could do is string a few words together.
for me I feel as if all the proving and representation he needs to do is on his bike and he without a doubt does that
Richie is a cheat, though.
Surprised this is the only comment saying this.
Yeah, didn't he get banned for performance enhancing drugs? Having said that he was probably doing what 90% of the competitors do. Let's be honest about it.
