I was given my first dachund when I was 5. Now I am 77 and have never been without one. They have been short haired brown and black but I definitely settled on wire haired when I was given one at age 45. They arefull of love and personality and have a mind of their own which is usual. When you give an order, they’ll think it over and eventually obey. However, beware; if not carefully watched they will become commanders of the household.

I adopted one and he’s the sweetest boy and very well behaved, hardly ever barks but definitely has a cheeky side.

My father was a US Army soldier. Our family spent nearly 13 years stationed in Germany. Dad was a fluent German speaker and an avid hunter in Germany. I would go hunting with my father both from deer stands and drive hunts. I've seen Dachshunds find badgers in their dens and drag them out. The word "Dachs" is German for badger, and these short-legged medium sized dogs were bred for hunting badgers and fighting them if necessary. Some dachshunds are actually medium sized dogs with short legs rather than small dogs. Their ferocity and fearlessness are something to see!

six months ago we adopted a standard wire hair that is black and tan, he is two years old now. He weights in at 30 lbs. is so affectionate and loyal. We have not seen a standard in a long, long time, let alone a wire hair, just not common where we live in Michigan. We also have a Cheweeny that the both of them have become best friends, and are inseparable. Their names are Fritz and Albert, I sometimes call them Duffus and Cleatus, their so goofy at times.

Wires are definitely the clowns of the 3 coat types and tend to be stronger and more robust health wise. I have a mini wire and would never be without him!

Our wire-haired is quite soft coated and a beautiful gold colour. A 4 year old with all the usual Daxie traits - funny, strong-willed, personable and people friendly - she is very tidy and her house training is very good. We re-homed her at 2 years and can't believe our luck. I am from a Dax family & think they're the best but my partner wasn't a dog person at all, however Daisy has won her heart and we both love her to bits.

Great video on the wire haired dauchand. We got one from the rescue center that looks like it’s part border terrier and wired haired Docksin. He’s a great pet. Very funny. It has the biggest front paws I’ve ever seen on a dog his size :-)

Our dachshund along with our doberman go for 10 kilometer hikes in the forest. He's a very active dog. He does get a bit tired at the end of the walk, while the doberman is on a never anding battery, but hey... the dachshund keeps up pretty well.

We have two mini-wirehaired - half siblings. Completely different temperaments but both adorable. They are chocolate brown. The younger one is my shadow (toilet, bathroom, dining room). He sleeps in a drawer under my bed where I keep my athletic clothes. Every night he just finds a nice dark place to burrow until he wants his morning walk. The girl she is more independent and intelligent (stubborn). She is slightly smaller and knows there are places she can get to where he half-brother is too big :-)
Both of them live to hunt deer (albeit on a leash), whilst they are sociable with other dogs, I know that they have always got half an eye on that next piece of prey. When they are close to the scent, they yelp (not bark), other dog owners sometimes think they are in pain, but it is just their way of telling me: "target within sight".
They love each other, knowing just how hard to nibble or bite on each other's ears or legs when playing. They make great family pets (we have four children). One or two dachshunds it doesn't matter - just make sure you give them plenty of love, exercise and hunting.

I have a wire hair dachshund. He is very smart and extremely stubborn. I call him the captain because when we go for a walk he leads the way. He won’t go somewhere if he doesn’t want to. He lives in the apartment with 2 cats, and although I see that all 3 love each other, I noticed that if my cats play in the tube type of thing, he will try to drag them out so I threw that toy out.

I have a red short hair mini, she is going on 16 and I know unfortunately her days are numbered. I have bonded and she with me, breaks my heart to look for a replacement but this is life and I would love to adopt a rescue wire hair as apposed to a newborn pup. A wirehair will be my next one

I just adopted a senior wire haired dog from my local shelter and he is the sweetest boy. He is so smart and active but is super stubborn at times. Even though he is going on 14 he is still super playful. I 100% recommend looking to adopt a wire haired pup!

@@abigailcatlos6945 Thank you Abigail, my dog Bailey didn't really get into mental decline till this year, she isn't the same dog she use to be but she is still a loving companion. She was never a licker! and showed affection by giving me a single lick on the tip of my nose! Usually after I had been kissing her ear flaps. I've heard this is considered to be an act of affection to dogs, it is with this one, she always responded with a single lick to my nose. Long story with this dog. I will do my best to keep her happy, she deserves it. I got Bailey from a breeder when she was 2 months old, she was purchased by me to be an emotional crutch. In October of 2005 I lost my youngest daughter in a car accident, she was 18. Bailey helped me tremendously to get through this, we have a strong bond. It is difficult for me to see her in decline but it is the way of life. She herself has been through a lot. She was accidentally poisoned with snail bait, looks like kibble to a dog, especially one low to the ground. Fortunately we caught the symptoms very early and she responded well and had a full recovery. In 2011 she ruptured a disc in her back leaving her a paraplegic, lost all use of her hind quarters. I took her to a surgeon, all within a week of it happening. I decided she deserved the chance with surgery, the vet was doubtful of the outcome. About a month after I noticed she was flexing low back muscles, trying to stand! Eventually she regained I would say 80 to 90% function and was able to walk again. The vet was amazed at her recovery and had me come back at one year, free visit. He took her to the back to his team to show them how well she had recovered! He and of course me, were very happy with this. Within this last year she can no longer stand. Her rear legs work but do not support standing. I use a sling and we go for a 20 minute walk daily, allows her to sniff, poop and be a dog. I apologize for this long reply, wasn't going to do it, but I felt a need to share her story and to show there is hope if this happens to a pet but you cannot wait too long to make a decision. She is my 7 thousand dollar companion, I would do it again. If you care to see pictures of Bailey I would love to share, if you want you can contact me def72158@gmail.com. If you are interested. I like to share pictures of my baby.

They are known to escape and go on solo adventures at EVERY given opportunity.
Opportunitys include: jumping out an open window, dashing out through the gap of a door not closed fast enough, digging under fences, jumping out of a moving car, a moving boat, and from a bicycle basket.
I love them to death, but they can be annoying like you wouldn’t believe it.
