Let us know which club works best for your game! Important to remember (as always with these tests) that this wasn't meant to be a definite representation of which club will perform better for an individual. With the data in the video we've shown the differences in ball flight between the two clubs, which will apply at any ball speed. Whether it works for you...you'll have to go out and get fit to find out! 😉
This video came at the perfect time for me and is really quite interesting. I want a club for going into Par 5s in two and I've never been truly comfortable with the hybrids I've owned. For some reason I never considered a 5 wood, but perhaps I should. My UT is my non-driver club off the tee, so a high flying 5 wood might just be what I'm looking for. Thanks, fellas!
I have been using a Cobra 3-4 hybrid at 19 degrees for over a year now and love it both from the tee and in the fairway (to be honest mostly from the rough)
my 2 and 4 iron for sure (of the longer clubs). I don't now why but my misses with irons are usually just short, my woods and hybrids are all over the place. But I think this is just because when I first started playing golf I asked for the 2 hardest clubs to hit, got a 60 degree and a 4 iron, my buddy claimed "when you can hit these, then you can play golf" so I practiced with them until I could hit them OK. Have to say that it has served me good, my handicap was down to 17 at the end of that same summer :)
I have a 22 ° 7wood and a 22° hybrid (slow swinging lady here) and as you find in the video as well, they both go about the same distance, the wood with a bit more height. The reason I prefer to put the hybrid in the bag usually is that I am way more confident with it out of light rough or even a fairway bunker. I just can't get myself to hit a wood anywhere but on the fairway (or off the tee, of course). Also I find it easier with the hybrid to just hit a shorter lower punch shot out from out under trees and the like.
MissyLaMotte I’m hoping that works for me. I go from a 3 wood lofted as a 4, to a Heavenwood 7 lofted 20-22. The 3 goes straight and long off the deck, but I’m struggling with the 7. I just moved to senior Recoil shafts in all but the 7, so that might be my trouble, but I just bought a 3 hybrid based on my success with 4 and 5 hybrids. I also just ordered a senior Recoil shaft that I’ll cut to 7 wood length for a final comparison. I haven’t played in 18 years and my swing speed slowed. I went from firm to regular, then realized I needed a lighter flex in the middle of my purchase spree. Only cost me 3 shafts, so I’m not super bummed. Fitters always scared me, or at least the rolling eyes I expect to get. These guys seem like the ones I’d trust with my fragile golf confidence. I’m 65 and fit, with a 20 handicap these days.
Thanks. I was thinking the exact same thing in regards to my offline shots and ummmm errrr playing out of the rough. The hybrid will suit me better that way.
I made the switch from a 5wood to hybrid years ago and never looked back. It had nothing to do with distance/feel as I hit my 5wood extremely well (and loved it). It had to do with those crappy "in the sh*t" lies off the fairway, in a divot, or a bunker 200+ away from the green. I simply would want to hit down harder on the ball for those kind of lies while still getting my consistent distance, the hybrid allowed me to confidently do so knowing I would not break my 5wood shaft (which had happened a few times). The hybrid also allowed me to do a simple chip and run or even putt from off the green in certain odd situations. Off the tee or fairway a 5wood is fantastic, but for me there is just more utility all-round with a hybrid.
Just got back into golf after not playing for 15 or so years. Found your channel and the more I understand about golf, the more value I"m getting out of your channel. My god what a resource. Thank you gents. I've got a set of cheap beginners clubs and you're providing some amazing insights into what I need to do next with my game and also my equipment
This guy has 1 of the cleanest pure swings I see in reviews. OMG Just straight and high. Not really drawing or fading natural. Wow.... I bow down to you Sire... 250 with a 5 wood from the deck.
I bought my first hybrid ever. A 22 degree hybrid. Wow what I love that club. Works from both the ruff and fairway without any problems. It has quickly become my "go to" club.
Hybrids all the way for me. Being barely 5' 5'', I just feel so much more confident with hybrids. In fact, I have a 2,3 and 4 hybrid in my bag and I use them in all kinds of situations: from the fairway, as a driver, for approach shots, around the green. And I experiment a lot with them when ther's nobody around...
This is really so true. Depending how well your swinging and the conditions, woods and irons get mixed up all over the place in my bag. Confirmed what I have found for a while. Good job
Just discovered you two, my goodness this was informative, thank you so much ... I too am a lefty and it is so wonderful to see Matt swing the club and Ian, so articulate my friend ... thank you both .... watched the blade vs cavity video too, again, amazingly informative for this 64 year old who after 30 plus years is still trying to improve ... cheers.
You just reminded me of how much I used to enjoy my 5 (and 7) wood. It has been replace with a 19 degree hybrid, which I also love, because of the greater versatility.
Matt hitting that Hybrid almost as far as I hit Driver! And also crushing that 5 Wood! I love watching his swing when you have him hitting in these videos. Especially as a lefty myself.
Thanks for the video. I’m a 4 handicap. I actually took the 3 wood out and carry the 5 wood and 3 hybrid. 5 wood for off the tee and 3 hybrid for the rough or par 5’s. I kept switching between the 2 for a while and noticed I quit going for the 3 wood. Giving up 10 yards was worth it. Enjoy watching your channel. Thanks
Yet another great video 👏🏾 I love the partnership you two have, Matt is always thinking of questions that subscribers/viewers will have and Ian breaks the answers down into great detail. Keep up the good work
I recently got rid of my 3 wood and 3 hybrid and replaced it with a 5 wood. Best choice I ever made. Easier to hit off the fairway, and easier to hit a more solid shot with a higher launch than a 3 wood. Feels more comfortable than a hybrid when I'm setting up to the ball. The extreme offset in the hybrids always bothered me.
I have 3 & 5 wood and 19* and 21* hybrid which I mix and match depending on where I’m playing and how windy it is. Excellent vid showing differing ball flight which confirmed my thoughts on what I see. Keep up the great work 👍🏌️
Ian, Matt, thanks again for another winner! You guys are the best. I just replaced a 5 wood and a 7 wood with a M3 4 hybrid. This hybrid is a rocket launcher! Before, I had too many clubs in my bag (has a 2 iron also) that all did about the same job. Much simpler now, no longer standing over the ball thinking "is this the right club?"
Guys that was great. I don’t like hybrids because I’m not good enough to hit them. I just took my 2 iron out of my bag and put in a 5 wood. I can hit it 220 and it is the cutest club you’ve ever seen.
Revisited this video as I've rebuilt my entire bag (3 wedges, PW-5iron, 22 & 18 Hybrids, 3W, D) and after fighting with my Epic #2 18 degree Hybrid for a while (loved it off the tee but too inconsistent and not enough hight off the fairway for a 230 club), I decided to go with an 18 degree Rogue Subzero 5 wood - and I love it. Every single thing about the club is a better fit for me: ease of consistent shot shape, ease of launch off fairway, & peak height for carries into Par 5s. After making the switch, I adjusted the loft on my 4 hybrid to 21 degrees from 22 for a gapping tweak and as a byproduct have hit it off of tees on short or tight Par 4s for a 220 accurate shot off the tee - something I never did before.
I don’t understand how anyone could give a thumbs down to any of your videos. The knowledge you guys share is priceless, you gel extremely well together, the camera work and editing is top notch - so what’s not to like? On a side note, I’m getting a complete bag fitting later this week here locally by a Golf Digest Top 100 fitter and one of the issues I’ve been considering is the 5W vs Hybrid scenario so this video helped my decide which way I “want” to go but I’ll see what my fitter has to say before I make the final decision.
Really interesting differences to see between the two clubs. I remember my Dad in the late 90s has a huge set of woods from Driver, through, 3, 5, 7, 9 and down to 11. I used to have a 27 degree 7 wood when i was a junior and didn't have the club speed to properly launch a 4 iron. At the top end of my bag now I have a 3 wood, 19 degree hybrid, and a 2 and 3 MP-H4 iron. I mix and match depending on wind conditions and how confident I've been hitting the hybrid and wood. I find they can snap hook way more than the irons, and because I don't struggle with height, if it's windy, I want to keep the ball lower.
I am definitely a 5 wood guy. I will use it both off the tee and into greens. If my life depended on me hitting one club, my 5 wood is what I’m pulling. It’s an older Callaway X Hot. As for pros, on the LPGA, Michelle Wie carries 3,5,7, and 9 woods.
I have just finished replacing my older Titleist Club setup. (983 E Driver, 980 3W, 975 5W; 4-PW DCI 990 B; 50, 54, 58 Spin Mill Vokeys.) Last fall I got 917 D2, 15* & 18* F2; Vokey SM6 - 46, 50, 54 V, 58-06 K. A month ago, looking to replace 4-9 Irons, I ordered 5-9 718 AP2, AND chose a 21* F2 to replace the 4 Iron. Playing 45 years and Never liked Hybrids. I have also been changing my swing from a very long 2 Plane Swing into a more compact 1 Plane, with my PGA PRO since late last Summer. Recently found TXG on RUclips and very much like what you present. Matt is your "Iron Byron" and seeing the other players you present is also informative. Thanks, Guys!
Great demo to show flight character of these two clubs. I game a 4 hybrid and 5 wood for the option of low flight and shot shaping of the 4h and the 5w for better height and a bit more distance. While these two are somewhat redundant in terms of distance, I think having the options in long approach shots worth carrying both.
In all seriousness though, this is why I carry the old RBZ stage 2 19*. The bigger headed hybrid gives me the best of both worlds in that I can hit it higher/lower and even off the tee occasionally on short par 4’s. I know it’s not the most forgiving model but it was a very affordable option that covers what I need.
I was feeling good about myself for finishing 2nd in an amateur event and then seeing Matt hit a 3 hybrid as far as I hit driver brought me back down a notch or two.
3 years ago and I've watched this plenty of times over the 3 years. The gap between 3 wood and 4 iron has been up for grabs more times than any other club in my bag. Have played 5 wood, 3 hybrid and 2 iron on and off and never seem to settle. Finally settled on an Epic Flash Sub Zero 5 wood with heavy weight forward. Gives me great height but not crazy high spin. Is great because it matches my 3 wood which I love. Always have the 2 iron available for linksy courses or windy days. Reintroduction of a 5 wood as my main gamer has been a game changer
I have an ancient 5 wood at 21 degrees that I bought off ebay when I first started golfing, and I've never worked up the nerve to get rid of it. Always flies high, draws perfectly. I don't even know the brand, it's so old and cheap, but I would cry if I lost it.
Like what you guys said, Callaway pioneered the 7 and 9 woods. I think more people should try them. I put in a 7w head at a hybrid shaft length. Feel that I'm getting the forgiveness & sharper descent of a fairway wood and the usability of a hybrid length. I can't quite get used to the offset look of a hybrid. Maybe I should get a 2nd hand model to try out.
I think the discussion here is: what club (or clubs) is/are going to fit the gap between your 3-wood and your longest iron. I went from a 5-wood which I hardly used, to an 18-degree hybrid to a 2 driving iron (16.5). Now, they all go about the same distance but they all have their pro's and cons and each person is going to have to chose which one suits the shots they like to make, which they are better at, and whether they are going to use the club enough for it to be worth carrying.
You guys are brilliant. Been looking for this advice for a while. I struggle with a hybrid and now I understand what I need... I always thought that the hybrid should always launch higher than an fwood... just thought I couldnt swing with a hybrid. Thank you for giving me clarity.
Once again an excellent video. Describes exactly what I've been debating back and forth on my bag the last couple of years. I always seem to go back to the 5 wood because it's so easy to hit more consistently...
Once again, this helps a lot. My bag is not yet complete so I was deciding between a hybrid or 5 wood and I'm now going for the 5 wood. I personally don't like the ball to roll much and for some reason, I think 5 wood could offer more forgiveness and I like the looks when it sits behind the ball. Thanks for yet another great video.
Interesting stuff - especially on what's happening with the PGA tour winners carrying 5 woods. I had already picked up on that because it seemed that may amateur golfers appeared to be moving from hybrids to driving irons in their bags. Let's bring on a driving iron comparison now. Thanks!
I use a five wood as my second shot on a par five. I play for 70-80 yards out. It’s more consistent for me than a 3 wood and puts me in my wheel house.
I used to play a 5 wood but most the courses in my area stay a bit wet so it would either plug or not move. So I ended up going with a 2 iron a lot less height so I would get the lower flight and enjoy it
Another great video it’s funny I feel way more confident with my hybrid than any 5 wood I have tested and I feel I can manipulate the flight better with a hybrid. It’s so interesting to see how 2 clubs with the same loft can go the same distance via different routes. It again hammers home the importance of going to a place like TXG to a all through your game to help discern what might be the best club for your game. I really want to see Matt hit a 1 iron for fun lol.
I sport both a 5 wood and a 4 hybrid. Would say I carry and hit them about the same yardages on average. I don't know if it's shaft length or if my hybrid has a bit of offset to it, but I choose between the clubs more or less based on where the trouble is. My bad 5 wood shots tend to fly right and my bad hybrid shots to the left. This probably comes down to swing flaws but it feels safe to know that I can effectively close out on side of the track.
Got my first eagle last year with a 5-wood. Had about 220 into the front portion of the green, left me with a 15-20 ft putt. Feels like butter when you catch it right 👍🏻
I didn't expect a hybrid to travel as far as a fairway wood. I use a 5 wood and hit it well; I can't say the same for a 4 hybrid, and I've tried 3 of them. Thanks for putting this comparison out there.
Late to the show here. I was carrying 5 wedges and had a lesson Saturday. My pro pulled one of the wedges. I have an opening for another club. I don't hit it as long as you guys but I carry my drives about 225. My 20.5 hybrid about 200 - 210. I don't have a FW in my bag. I think another hybrid might not be right. If I put a FW in I'd use it exclusive off the tee. I have a Callaway GBB Epic 3W and a Cobra 5W. Decisions... decisions. It's not to fill a gap, it's for tight fairways.
Great vid thanks guys. I struggle to carry my 3 hybrid further than my 4 hybrid, I think a 5 Wood could help me get the ball up in the air for the extra carry instead of my 3 hybrid.
As a 17 handicapper I have 5wood, 3hybrid and 4hybrid in the bag at the same time. They each give me different carry distance to complement my driver and irons. I mostly use the 5W from the tee and fairway but if I end up in the rough I prefer my hybrids.
Another excellent video guys! I love the way you present the information, then leave it to us to consider for our own games. High fiber food for mental digestion!
I love my 5 wood since it's so easy to hit and I use it like three different clubs. I choke down on it an inch for every 15 yard I need to take off of it. I hit it 220 yards with a full grip,205 gripping down one inch and 190 gripping it all the way down to the bottom of the grip.
With all of the options today for hybrids, driving irons, woods, wedges and putters, at last count my bag now has 27 clubs. I need to get a bigger bag soon.
Really enjoyed this analysis...... 3 years ago I bought a Titleist Driver; 3; 5 wood plus Hybrid, 5 irons down to 9 to add to my existing Taylormade 7 wood (old favourite) plus my Mizuno PW; 52 and 56 wedges. This was all accidental in some ways but I love this combination. I get the same or similar distance with my 5 wood and hybrid I do get that additional height with the 5 wood, which you need at time.. I’m an old guy so don’t get the distances but, I can agree that the results are very similar
Mentioned already by others, but I too would love to see an in-depth hybrid vs. driving/utility/cross-over iron comparison. I have a 23 deg. hybrid and a well-behaved 18 deg. 3-wood, but I'm looking for a club to use when the lie conditions prevent me from using the 3-wood but I still need all the distance I can find.
As someone who just doesn't get along with hybrids, this definitely opened my eyes to bagging a 5w, or maybe even something in the 22* loft area to cover the distance between my 3w and 4i. Currently playing a more forgiving 3i, and while it is great off the tee, the forgiveness isn't as great off of the fairway.
I use both hybrids and a 5 wood. I bought the X2Hot 1-3-5 a couple of years ago because that's what I always had but I'm re-evaluating my bag and at the point where I'm into carrying different bags for different courses. I'm going to try out a 17 degree 3 wood, basically a 4 wood, and maybe eliminate the 3 and 5 wood altogether. Plenty of options to try out.
Personally I'm big fan of the 4 wood, find it a bit easier to hit than the 3 wood and goes about as far. We should be doing my fairway wood fitting on the channel pretty soon and I'll be asking Ian to try the 4 wood option so stay tuned for that.
I play on a championship links with very tight lies so I have found that the hybrid is really fantastic. It is also great in the semi rough. I wish that I had one years ago.
Just a quick note that while I have tried now two or three 5 woods even through fittings, in the end I am better with, more comfortable with a hybrid as it’s more like an iron stroke wise so as I use it (or them as I deploy two hybrids) often instead of irons - hence I only use 7-wedges in irons, the hybrids have been a life saver and I seem to get more accuracy with them (different makes but both tweaked for length and swingweight and loft - one Mizuno, one cobra). Matt just a point where you were more confident with the larger head I find I am less confident - maybe a factor because the one area that I still struggle with especially is my driver. Goes back to fit for the specific individual and their needs.
19 hybrid also goes about the same distance for me - too far to gap between 4i and hyb. I play a 21* and get that 230ish carry. I also play a 4 wood over a 3w for the same reason. If you can play more loft do it - makes it easier off the deck. Holds green better.
My 5 wood is one of the most useful clubs in my bag; I use it for anything from 260-230, and it is a steel-shafted (X100 @42.5") monster^^ I went to steel since I couldn't find a graphite shaft heavy enough that I liked. As for hybrids, I like them, but since I started carrying a 64* wedge I have to decide between the hybrid and 4 iron...the 4 iron usually wins out. Before the 64 came along, I used to carry two 5 woods (one for tee shots and another smaller one for the fairway), which was no problem since I don't carrying a 3 wood. So, it is nice to see that at least one of my clubs can keep up with Matt ;~)
Thanks again for this tiny video. Great stuff. To be honest I switched to hybrids quite a long time ago and forgot my 5 wood completely. After this video I surely will take the 5 wood again into consideration during my fitting process. I also forgot how much confidence I felt at address position over the 5 wood though the longer shaft makes it a little more difficult to hit. I remembered immediately when you mentioned😊. Well done.
I actually got rid of my 3&5 woods and replaced with 2&3 hybrids. After watching this video, I think I've made the right decision. Where I play, 2 of the 4 par 5's are up hill, 1 is flat and the other is downhill. Over the past few years, wind has become a factor more than ever. I'm not a high ball hitter so by putting in hybrids I find I have better control and at the same time haven't really lost any distance. Your thoughts?
So... i tend to hook hybrids spectacularly... Then i sinned... :) & took 2" off my epic 5wood (rogue max in x-flex) The club shoots bullets, don't think it missed a fairway yet & is just as effective off the deck. Ball flight is more penetrating but it stops and goes just as far as it used to. Only thing i do not like is how light the club head feels now, but will gladly live with the results. Thanks for a great show as always.
Great video been thinking of getting a 5 wood as i play a 21 degree hybrid and never been 100% happy with it too much of a gap between 3 wood and 3 iron i want more height and a bit more distance and this video has convinced me.
I’m a 0.6 handicap with moderate swing speed and carry a 9 wood. I just find that the turf interaction and ability to launch the ball out of the rough works better for my relatively shallow angle of attack.
Great Video Guys. I’ve always debated this topic with myself. Nice to see it presented in such a good way. Always liked my 5 wood. But good to know that a hybrid on a windy day would work as well. Will be in soon!
An.other great comparison. I am almost 70. I carry driver, 5 metal, 7 metal, and 4 hybrid. I don't hit the ball that far any more so I find the combination works for me. I'll tee off with the 5 metal on short par 4's or tight par 4's or very long par 3's and carries between 185 to 190.
Looking forward to the driving iron to be thrown into the mix. I almost think a person needs to rotate in/out clubs (driving iron, hybrid, or fairway wood) depending on the course and weather conditions
Good point Clayton. I have 18 clubs that I choose from depending on which courses I am playing. I will pull out my 2 and 3 hybrid and put in a 5 wood and 64 wedge when I play municipal courses with hard traps. I will also pull out my 4 and 5 iron and put in the 4 and 5 hybrid if I play courses with deep rough. I can hit the 5 hybrid out of the gnarliest lies and get it out of almost any fairway bunker, but it's tricky to keep the flight down if needed. If I don't know the course I will carry 2-4 hybrids and the rest irons with no woods. If I had to choose, I'd pick hybrids over woods because I find them more versatile and easier to control trajectory. It would take a much better player than me to flight down a 7 or 9 wood. Great content guys!
Another great video guys. Playing down here in Texas in windy conditions with a fast swing speed a 5 wood would balloon up on me big time! Love my cobra F7 hybrid.
Just going off many of the responses here and from what I read in golf forums and club reviews, a lot of people find the hybrids have a draw bias and many don't play them because they either hook them or can't fade them or work the ball the way they want. Sounds like this could be a video/challenge for you guys. Explaining why hybrids tend to draw so often and testing for or finding a line of hybrids that doesn't have this inherent draw bias or maybe some fitting/tuning possibilities to remove the draw bias in the hybrids.
I haven’t hit my 3 wood in 2 yrs. Club pro suggested I go to strong 3H (17* TSi 2). Then I gap down with 4H and 5H. 5H replaces my 4i. With my long game set up like this, it allows me to carry an extra wedge. I have a little bit of a gap between my driver and 3H but I am ok with that.
This is the part of my bag i really want to get dialed in. I've had a 5 wood in the past and loved it, currently use a 3 hybrid and it's a little love/hate. I've played around with 3 irons also but there is times where it just lacks a little hight compared to others. Hybrid is a great option to be the middle of the lot and versatility but not sold on it
I know I absolutely love my Ping G 400 # 5 Wood. Its an awesome weapon. Woods and hybrids both have their uses. I love both of those worlds. I carry a full set of woods in my bag. 3,5,7, 9 and 11. :) Also a full set of hybrids. :)
I ended up going with the ping g400 5 wood and 7 wood. Even though I have plenty of speed (126 mph driver) and no issue elevating a hybrid. But I can loft the 5 wood and 7 woods down 1 degree and slightly open the face. And if much rather have a club that initially is high launch and I use technique to flight it down, vs having a club that launches low and I have to work to launch it high. For me it’s always easier to flight it lower with technique vs adding height.
I have a 5 wood (18 degree 42 inch) and a 3 hybrid (19 degree, 40.5 inch) i find i get very similar distances with both. I use the wood off the fairway and t, and i use the hybrid out of the rough. I could probably get away with keeping 1 but i have no idea which to keep. Its killing me
Hi Ace: here's two pennies of commen cents to stop you from killing yourself: Just keep the 5 wood and always put yoiur drives in the fairway. LOL Seriously, Given that you can probably hit the hybrid well out of the fairway, keep the hybrid and then you can choose if you want to drive into the rough or fairway, which is an option; with the extra club spot go with a gap wedge or ??????????
I carry a Ping G 400 5 Wood in my bag. Love that club. Matter of fact I have the Ping G 400 3, 5, 7, 9 Woods and also added a Callaway Rogue 11 Wood. :) Love the Woods. But I also have to say that I have a complete set of really nice hybrids too. I have a 3,4, 5, 6 and 8 in hybrids and they are split between Callaway Rogue X and Ping G 400's. Love the way I am set up with the woods and hybrids now. Lots of great choices. Spider Dubiel
Enjoyed the vid. I've always gone with a 3/5 wd combo althought the 3 lately has been a 16.5 degree wood. Because hybrids are typically easier out of heavier rough, I am going with a slightly larger hybrid for confidence and believe that I will not lose yardage. Even though the shaft difference 42 v 40, is great, I may obtain better contact with the shorter shaft. We will see.
I now have 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 woods in my bag. They get the ball higher and it stops on a dime. I'm 70 years old and my iron play was getting worse. This was a great cure!!
Any chance you guys can speak to iron lofts on PGA tour pro clubs. I had heard they are possibly cranked down loft wise compared to stock sets?!
Can you guys do a video about graphite vs steel in your woods, kinda an old concept brought back to life or get into graphite vs steel irons?
2020, 2+ years later and this video is fantastic!
Good points and thanks for sharing your experiences!
Well Said !!!!
I think I have watched this 3 times now. Great to watch again when I'm thinking about changing my 18 hybrid for a 5 wood.
I’m 5’6 and totally get this. I’m a big woods player. Starting to experiment replacing my 4-5 irons w/ hybrids.
This is really so true. Depending how well your swinging and the conditions, woods and irons get mixed up all over the place in my bag. Confirmed what I have found for a while. Good job
Just discovered you two, my goodness this was informative, thank you so much ... I too am a lefty and it is so wonderful to see Matt swing the club and Ian, so articulate my friend ... thank you both .... watched the blade vs cavity video too, again, amazingly informative for this 64 year old who after 30 plus years is still trying to improve ... cheers.
Welcome to the channel Dave!
Totally!!! He is awesome! I’m a lefty too. I’ve learned so much from them.
Thanks
Yet another great video 👏🏾
I love the partnership you two have, Matt is always thinking of questions that subscribers/viewers will have and Ian breaks the answers down into great detail. Keep up the good work
👍👍👍
I recently got rid of my 3 wood and 3 hybrid and replaced it with a 5 wood.
Best choice I ever made.
Easier to hit off the fairway, and easier to hit a more solid shot with a higher launch than a 3 wood.
Feels more comfortable than a hybrid when I'm setting up to the ball. The extreme offset in the hybrids always bothered me.
Thanks for demystifying hybrids versus fairway woods! And watching Matt's swing is a lesson in and of itself.
Another fantastic video, guys. I spent an hour yesterday in exactly this dilemma. Settled on 18 degree Apex. Toughest spot in the bag
👍👍👍
Matt plays a game with which I’m not familiar.
is this golf?
Guys that was great. I don’t like hybrids because I’m not good enough to hit them. I just took my 2 iron out of my bag and put in a 5 wood. I can hit it 220 and it is the cutest club you’ve ever seen.
Best golf channel new or old on RUclips. Well done guys.
Thanks and good luck at the fitting! Let us know how it goes.
I love my xhot 5wood totally agree
Same, best club in my bag
I have just finished replacing my older Titleist Club setup. (983 E Driver, 980 3W, 975 5W; 4-PW DCI 990 B; 50, 54, 58 Spin Mill Vokeys.)
Last fall I got 917 D2, 15* & 18* F2; Vokey SM6 - 46, 50, 54 V, 58-06 K.
This is the kind of video you watch over & over!
I have the 4 & 5. Hard to get the grass and dirt out of the speed pocket. LOL
I got a 5-wood last year, and I love it! But I keep the 3-hybrid around to swap out on days where it's windy. Also carry a 4 hybrid always.
I was feeling good about myself for finishing 2nd in an amateur event and then seeing Matt hit a 3 hybrid as far as I hit driver brought me back down a notch or two.
Watching me hit it into opposite fairways at my course opener over the weekend would've brought you back up those notches 😆😆😆
Ian n Matt,
watching your videos are akin to updating our golf software.
Keep posting updates more regularly.
I’m sure you guys are in my head. Every video is something I’m thinking about
I have an ancient 5 wood at 21 degrees that I bought off ebay when I first started golfing, and I've never worked up the nerve to get rid of it. Always flies high, draws perfectly. I don't even know the brand, it's so old and cheap, but I would cry if I lost it.
I recently switched out my 4 iron in favor of a 22 degree hybrid, but carry a 18 degree 5 wood as well.
Still making up my mind on what I like better.
Great stuff again guys. The most knowledgable and objective channel around right now
Like what you guys said, Callaway pioneered the 7 and 9 woods.
Excellent technical videos. You're both very polished presenters and the whole packaging is highly professional.
Damn how accurate was Matt today!
Could you make a 2 HY vs 3 Wood?
I would love this video. I have both right now and debating on which to game.
This video made me remember why I used to love hitting my 5 wood -- although I am not willing to give up my 3 hybrid just yet. Great video.
Keep kicking ass guys. I still love my 5 wood compared to a hybrid.
Hi Simon: My perception is that 3 woods are usually 15 degrees and that 18 degrees is between a 4 and 5 wood

Well done.
You guys ever try an 11 Wood ? I bought a Callaway Rogue 11 Wood last season. Love it.
Another fascinating and amazingly informational video from Ian and Matt. Thanks for sharing your amazing wisdom.
Thanks for a great show as always.
hotmelt to your desired swingweight, it'll go farther.
Txg can u guys do a video on hybrid vs driving and test some different driving irons
We will for sure!
Hi guys great work. I've just taken my 5 wood out and put a ping 400 3hybrid in play, works a treat as it's more versatile. Cheers
This was an awesome demonstration! I have always played a 5 & 7 wood. Never hit the hybrid as well. Thanks!
I wish I could hit any club as well as Matt does!
How about a 2 iron driving iron such as the P790 UDI
I too have a love affair with my F7 hybrid. Probably my fav club to hit
Absolutely, tons of comments to that effect and would make a great video.
We keep hearing about the descen t angle and rollout difference between hybrid and fwy. Test after test I see very little.
LOL
Seriously, Given that you can probably hit the hybrid well out of the fairway, keep the hybrid and then you can choose if you want to drive into the rough or fairway, which is an option; with the extra club spot go with a gap wedge or ??????????
You just answered a concern that I had ,7 wood for me.
I think my next set will probably have a very different club makeup than what's in the bag now .
Thanks for another great video
Enjoyed the vid. I've always gone with a 3/5 wd combo althought the 3 lately has been a 16.5 degree wood. Because hybrids are typically easier out of heavier rough, I am going with a slightly larger hybrid for confidence and believe that I will not lose yardage. Even though the shaft difference 42 v 40, is great, I may obtain better contact with the shorter shaft. We will see.
I now have 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 woods in my bag. They get the ball higher and it stops on a dime. I'm 70 years old and my iron play was getting worse. This was a great cure!!
any issue with running both? I am actually looking at adding the M3 to gap from 5 iron to 5 wood
Great video
What about hitting from the rough. Would you guys recommend hybrid instead of 5 wood because of smaller head and less grass interaction.
