IS THE 3 WOOD DEAD? // Getting the Right Gapping with 5 Wood, 3 Wood or Mini Driver

  • Today, Ian is in the bay to test out if a 3 Wood still has a place in the modern golf bag. For some it will always, but with technology changing quickly and only 14 clubs allowed. It does raise the question if the 3 Wood has more or less value than a 5 wood?

    Just removed the driver out of the bag, for I love how consistent the Mini driver is, and replaced my 3 wood and now have just the mini and a 7 wood! I can carry the 7 wood 240 off the ground and 260-280 is my mini driver off a tee! Do not see why I need to change or add another club that I don't feel confident enough in!

    • @rexdiamond
      @rexdiamond 23 дня назад

      I'm moving in that direction too. I'm inconsistent with my driver and the mini driver is very close in distance but almost always straight down the middle so I'm gaining strokes off the tee using it instead of the driver. Currently I'm mini driver - 5 wood, but am looking to test some 7 woods to see if that's a better gap and more accurate. I've got to say that the mini driver is something special.

    Actually my 3 wood is my favorite club in the bag. One of the most consistent for me off the tee and second shot in like par 5’s. Golf will and always will be subjective.

    I don't understand the concept of calling a 10.5* lofted mini driver a 3 wood replacement. 10.5 is driver loft, regardless of what size head it is or if you're hitting it off the deck. And delofting a 5 wood to 16.5 * means it's a 4 wood, so it's not 5 wood loft anymore. I do agree that most amateurs don't need a 3 wood. They'd be better off with a 4 or 5 wood, 7 wood combo and let's face it most of us do not play from 7K plus yards on a course.

      Mini drivers come in 11.5 and 13.5, so the one they have is the lower model. The larger head makes it a good off the tee option that you can still hit off the deck.

      Same concept as the higher MOI irons, no? Add mass low and behind the ball and you can de loft slightly. Suddenly a more forgiving club

      I put a Callaway 16.5 high loft 3 in the bag and it works very nicely off the tee or the deck. I am 75 yrs old and I get 165 out of it.

      I agree with you but they do offer a 13* mini driver which I’ve hit better than my 3 wood. But I play a 10* driver and a 5 wood. No 3 wood. Most would be better off with a higher lofted driver and 5 and 7 woods. 🤙🏽

    I go driver, 5 wood, 7 wood, 5 iron. For me and my swing speed the gaping is perfect. My confidence in those clubs is very high, so I haven’t played with a 3 wood in over a decade.

      4w/7w is the move for sure. I love both of those clubs so much. I go into 5i though. I couldnt hit my 4i if my life depended on it, but its theoretical distance is very similar to my 7w

  • @justinstephenson9360
    @justinstephenson9360 2 месяца назад +10

    for those of us with average swing speeds the 3w is, for most people, dead and has been for a while. We just do not have the speed to get enough launch consistently. My 5w carries 210 yards, I can shape it and (sadly needed too often but that is another issue) I can use it for a little choppy shot to get the ball out of the trees, below the lower branches and then run out

    • @BigDawgCAM

      I would bet ~50% of golfers couldn’t get more distance on average out of their 3w vs their 5w. I would love to see people hit the brnr mini off the deck instead

    I’m mixing it up this year. Used to go driver , 3 wood and 3 hybrid. But took out 3 wood and replaced it with a Chucky 2 iron for a back up off the tee. Doesn’t go quite as far as 3 wood but consistency is significantly better. Also has a lower ball flight, and even though off the deck goes a similar distance to hybrid, playing a sw Scotland links course the lower and highly ball flight option is a nice tool to have.

    I'm a mini convert. Rarely hit 3w off deck and when I need less than driver, the BRNR is way more forgiving from the tee. From the deck, 5w is easier to get up than 3, and a bit less spinny and a little longer than the 7w.

    Fitting in west Texas we sell a lot of 3 woods as they need to keep the ball flight down and want a lot of roll out because of the 30-40 mph gusting winds out there... sell lots of 5 woods in the dfw area, need a little more height and distance with the softer and plusher conditions.

      This is exactly it. It all depends on what conditions you play in. I used to play a lot of links golf in Scotland. Good luck launching your 4/5/7 wood into that 40 miler ! But on modern inland courses carrying over deep bunkers the higher lofts are great.

Even playing at fairly long courses I’d imagine a lot of folks can get around just fine with 3/5 wood off the tee all day (they are hot these days!). Takes off a little pressure with the big stick. The ability to modify the launch with the little slider is fantastic on new TM woods. I know this may sound silly, but don’t you all think it gets a little boring hitting driver/wedge over and over again on par fours…?

    My go to bag is my light stand bag with 9-10 clubs. I play for recreation. I have focused more on my short game clubs, my current setup is: putter, Cleveland SS Chipper, 56, 50, pw, 8i, 6i, 5h, 5w and driver. I like the SS Chipper because of its bounce and wide sole, it is nice have when you play from wet and pudding soft lies as well as around the green. I rather have more choice in my short game than in my long game. Between the driver, 5w and 5h, I get out there close enough to use my short clubs.
    I do have a nice full 14 club bag also, but the light stand bag is easier to grab and go and it have become my preferred way of playing golf. I am a walker.

    Great video boys. The question I have is about Ian's 5 wood: At 16.5* it's probably coming in a bit hot to stop on a green. So if it's a tee ball club, what's the point of the mini driver? Does he have 3 clubs for tee shots? Would going driver, mini driver, 18,* or maybe driver, 16.5*, 20* be better for attacking par 5s? I have similar speed to Ian and I'm building the top of my bag, so just curious why you've gone with those choices, not a knock!

    Slower swing speed here, but I don’t have much shaft lean at impact and have always been able to get away with gapping and height with a 15* to 18*. I only use three wedges so I can carry 3/5/7/9 woods for tighter long game gaps; it’s the gaps with driver to 16.5* to 21* that weren’t as even nor what I wanted to see

    Have a specific question regarding the correlation between vertical launch, attack angle, club loft, and dynamic loft. Is there an ideal amount/rule for the amount of de-lofting that supposed to take place on irons. In other words if you have a 32 degree 7 Iron is there an ideal amount of de-lofting that would show up on dynamic loft? I know you have done videos on the topic but I have been trying to correlate the trackman published data for PGA people. From what I can see on a Trackman it is around 8-10 degrees is that correct?

    Of course on a tee nothing beats the mini driver but I’ll be fun to see the difference from the ground !!! The question also is why would you need two driver if you hit them from a tee ???

    Bought one, took out he Stealth+ 3 wood and won’t change back. 3 wood off the tee gave me a few bad hooks where mini flies straight. No problems off the deck, actually hit it better off the deck versus a very low tee.

    What adaptor is on the Mini Driver? Is it the same as the fairways or is it the same as their drivers? ...Or does TM use the same adaptor across the board?

    What kind of shaft would you place in a mini driver? Same like in a 3 wood? Longer, shorter? Lighter, heavier? Have my TM 3 wood with Tour AD DI 7x and was thinking to use the shaft in the TM Mini Driver.

    So what length did you play the mini driver at, I feel that the only way that I would get much better accuracy with a mini driver compared to driver would be with a shorter shaft, I haven't played a 3 or 4 wood longer than 42.5" in several years.

    I wanted to hate the mini driver but 5 rounds in and it’s probably the best club in my bag. Rocket off the tee at an easy 275 and stunningly easy 250 off ground

    I haven’t bagged a 3 wood in a very long time. I could never justify using it over driver off the tee, and the 5 wood is much better off the turf. I think 4w/7w is a combo that could work for a lot of people.

    I have only 5-wood and the gapping is fine. Carry about 200m, rollout to 210-2015. Driver carry max around 220m and rollout to 230-240 meters.

    Question......If you want a fairway finder why not just take a 12 degree driver, reduce the shaft length to 43.5", add a few grams to the head to get the swing weight back up to D2-D4? You'll have to dial in the right shaft but I think standing over a 460cc head will be even more confidence inspiring than standing over a 300cc head. I'd like to hear your thoughts on that idea.
    It's interesting how sometimes old ideas come back around. I recall about 20-25 years ago, before Tight Lies and Orlimar changed the game, when 3 woods were larger heads with deep faces. Hitting a 3 wood off the tee was a lot easier, and the perfect choice for tight fairways.

    3W at 14.5 and 7W at 21 is a perfect combo for me. However if I was forced to have one fairway wood it’ll be a 4W or 5W.

    There is one hole on my home course where a 3w is routinely attractive. The rest either don’t need it, or demand my very best to avoid trouble. 5 wood / 3 hybrid much more relevant.

    I have a 5w, a 2H, a 2i a 3W. I go back and forth, just can't decide to be honest. In most cases though, I lean towards having the 2H and the 2i in my bag I play the 2H from the field usually and that 2i off the tee if I am not using driver. I have seriously considered playing a 5w though as it just feels easier to predict.

    I carry Mini driver 5 wood, 3 wood reduntant now have to stand on a 3w for 300 yards where as a Mini is much easier to hit 300 then 5 w for 250 carry, I’m debating a 9w addition

    Why not use 3 wood head lofted up at 16 or 16.5 with 5wood shaft length (maybe draw bias) to have the increased forgiveness of a bigger profile?

  • @Pud56
    @Pud56 2 месяца назад

    The question depends on handicap, as a junior I used a 2 wood, it was a weapon strong off the tee, and effective off the deck. Now age 67, my 3 wood, 16.5 degree AiSmoke effectively a 4 wood, is 25 yards behind my driver and super straight, i also carry a 7 wood turned down to 5.5 wood, opens the face up and again 25 yards behind my 3/4wood so gapping works for me, not sure where a 2 wood fits in my bag. 30 years ago, i am sure it would have worked. Lastly, my driver is also a AiSmoke, 9 degree, turned down to 8, i can grip down for a fairway finder, still have the ability to work it both ways, so yet again mini driver doesn’t suit my bag.

    Not dead. Just time and place. I have four options for that spot in the bag. 13.5* or 15* fairway wood or 11.5* or 13.5* mini driver.
    And i will play 18* fairway wood or 18* driving iron.
    Set up depends on weather/conditions, if i need it off the tee or in the fairway, and the course lay out.

    I'm an old guy. I cannot get the distance of my youth. My driver is a 3W, 225yds average. The driver just was not giving me consistency. The miss hits hurt me much less than the driver and made my overall score go up. I have a 5W, 7W, 9W, 11W, 8i-PW, GW, SW, LW, putter. This has helped a lot and with senior shafts I'm getting what I can from the clubs. The fairway woods are easy to hit from the rough. My chipping and putting help me a lot. The ego crusher? Playing the old man tees, but it keeps a foursome moving along and keeps my handicap at 12. Use what suits you best. Also, be honest with yourself. Go have fun. It is supposed to be fun.

    3 wood isn't dead. It's player need/requirement/want/use dependant. I carry a TM Stealth+ rocket for tee use. Its a good 280 club from the tee but I never use it off the deck because I don't have to.

      @@mikerogers1949 Actually - I don't need to. I was on the range since this video and I found gripping down a bit and loft it up to 14.5* I carry my 3 wood around 260. I also carry a TM SIM UDI 2 iron and hat club is a steady 248 carry and I can work it low fade, mid fade and high fade.

    This is where the average golfer needs to be honest with themselves. Yeah sure we all want to play what the pros play. But reality is us average joes just don’t have the swing speed. Loft is our friend. I’ve swapped out the top of the bag. Gone are the turned up 9.5 driver, 15 3 wood and now playing 11.5 turned down, 18 5 wood turned down 3 wood shaft, 18 5 wood turned up 7 wood shaft.
    Absolute game changer.
    What I’m saying is fitting is a must, but do it opening minded to what you need. Results on the course matter the most

    3 woods alive. I just still see it as an option for players who want to attack long par 5 fives on their second shot or play something more spinny and safe off the tee. I’d rather have a 3 wood spinning at 3200 heading into a par 5 then a flat mini coming in at 2300. Again it just all depends on what you want. I’ve personally put the mini @11.5 as my driver replacement 300-310 yards high and straight in the air with about 2500-3000 spin. I like it on my narrow courses where I don’t need that extra 15-25 yards with my driver.

  • @Joseph-fc3pv

    Driver built to favor a fade. 3 wood is easier to draw off the tee or turf and can be setup as such. 7w or 3h is next in bag and should be neutral to hit either way.
