- Rob Ferretti of Super Speeders gave Matt a 1992 Volvo 240 and, even at free, it's so awful he doesn't want it. Nevertheless, the opportunity for rallycross was too hard to pass up.

I hit every dirt road I could find in my old 87 240 volvo. They love dirt. Did well with all 114hp a super bad clutch, broken motor mount. And never had an oil change the 2 years I had it. I would still have it to day, if I new that it had 2 fuel pumps on it. Cuz of that car. I'm volvo for life.
Dude, I'd definitely keep the aesthetics like this, swap in a 2jz, nice turbo, nice wheels and suspension, and BAM! Sleeper Volvo station wagon.

I'm surprised by the dislike of the 240, it's the lego car, it was used in racing, so you practically get suspension parts thrown at you when you own one, so it can grip well, the engine bay is large enough to room a BMW V12 with turbos, the stock engine has in the past been tuned upwards to about 1000hp so you wouldn't really need a swap if you didn't want to, they're RWD, and they're fairly light compared to most modern cars at around 1300-1400kg. So besides looking like a brick, they're fun cars...

A Volvo 240 is like a Nokia 3310; it's nearly impossible to kill.
YouDontWannaFightMe Indeed.. We had a 1980 244 GL in the family for many years. My dad bought it in I think 1990, passed it on to my brother in 98 who then passed in on to me in 02.. Sure it started rusting in the end, but the amount of abuse it survived from all three of us is simply amazing. It was only the rising fuel prices and the cost of a respray (if we restored it) that killed it.. It was still starting everyday and purring like a swedish kitten.. :P

It's like a 90's civic, it either rusts into the ground or you get bored with it. The secret to te second problem is a swap in both cases.

I just said an LS because Americans love it. But if I was going to do a swap on one of these for myself I would probably do a T5 or T6 engine, which ever fits best. Get a really good 6 speed standard, I would need a new diff and driveshaft then get all new suspension that's fully adjustable. Bigger breaks and wider tires. Lighten it a bit then scare Porsches and Corvettes at track days. I wouldn't be leaving the T5 or T6 stock

CaliMeatWagon Gaming I know more about Subaru's. So I don't know if that would be possible with a Volvo. I know on a 1995 Legacy/Outback you can take newer WRX parts and engines and put them in like a 1995 Legacy. I have the feeling that Volvos aren't that way

To be honest I would have bought that and drove it would have made a great beater/junk hauler.
I've done more offroading in my (slightly nicer) stock '93 240 wagon than most people who drive lifted trucks have... and it hasn't skipped a beat.

There's a (jackass) here near Seattle that swapped a 5.0 coyote engine in his. It was brutally fast. I say jackass because when leaving a meet one day, he sent two different cars off the road, injuring the two passengers in one.
just needs a tyre swap and is good for another 150k miles :)

zloychechen5150 that's probably what this wagon has, my 940 has 4.10 gears but it's still painfully slow - unless I'm going downhill with a tail wind, then it actually goes pretty well

Swede here coming to confirm;
This is actual a real problem in Sweden if you don't lock the diff down, hence almost every Volvo 240/740/940 in Sweden has a locked diff in some shape or form.

A friend of mine had one of those (sedan, but the same otherwise) in high school and I had the immense displeasure of driving it once.
Since then I've driven a thrashed out 86' Corolla, a poorly modified 92' Charade, a VN Commodore, an 80 series LandCruiser, an 04' Forester, a 91' Hyundai Lantra (at various levels of decrepitation), a 96' Mazda 323 1.6, an unidentifiable van from the 70's lovingly referred to as the "Bongo Bus" and a Bobcat.
To this day that Volvo is still the slowest and poorest handling car I have ever driven..

Buy a shitbox. Get sponsors to do a engine/drive train swap, suspension, tires, the works. Make it like a Corbin zero-fucks-given sleeper.
Road trip it to various tracks and drag strips. The lol's may be worth it.
I have boughten won for $100 from a friend. It was his mother car. It was ac1989 Didn't look much better than this one. Then I had a 1992. Got it for free, the owner put in a aftermarket stereo. I took the badge off the grill. I also tinted the windows. I put some Chrome Rim covers on. And I put a silver design sticker on the side to give it a little more Style. It was like a tank undestructable until I smashed it into an SUV because the girl was plastic and it went right through and busted the radiator, I'm sure if I hit the SUV with my bumper I would have been okay. The car was low that SUV with higher so that's where it hit. The car was toast. The brakes were too lite for the heavy car. The car drove okay but it was underpowered everybody loved it. People used to cut me off and I had to say your car is going to fall apart if you it this tank.
I paid more for mine, but got a straight body and a 5-speed.

I just bought a 244d 1991 4dsd 5 speed I love it! There is alot of cool parts for this car, turbo kits and 16v swaps not to mention built well with strong engines they can keep up with the best of cars.
Volvo 240 is a good rally car, and I heard your buddy said if was the 160 hp model. Throw a boost controller, and some springs on it, and lock the diff, you be ready to go. 💪
Matt, I think you started a new revolution. The world will be such a better place with no stinky tires. No more tire pollution, no more smokey tire burnouts (because fiery rims burnouts are so much cooler). And no more international tire companies filling their pockets with the poor's money!
It's horrible that this "car guy" repeatedly rags on the Volvo. 1994 and older Volvo's are extremely solid in their build design, extremely easy to work on, and can put out a surprising amount of power with any of the B2xx series engines that came in them. But I understand, this show is more about that mad JDM VTEC Yo!

Got a black 240 GL with T5 transplant in it. 380 hk on the rear wheels. It is awsome. The sound from the T5s are amazing.
My parents had one growing up. Too bad yours is automatic they absolutely suck. We had out manual 240 for 240,000 miles before we had to take it off the road due to rust. Mechanically the thing was a beast.

There are tons of these, vovlo 740 and volvo 940 in the winter, here in Sweden. And they are actually quite a bit of fun in the snow :)
