Overgrown Oak Tree Trimming W/Handtools | Another Avoidable Mistake

  • Oh yeah, and I almost cut off my thumb.
When your oak tree is so overgrown that you couldn't crawl under it if you wanted to, there is only one thing to do. TRIM IT. As I demonstrate, it is doable with handtools, but not ideal. This job, which took just around an hour start to finish, was done for a friend and for some reason that made me think about it differently, from examining the job to completing it. I took the bare minimum tools, which probably quadrupled my job time, and I didn't fully examine the tree, so I underestimated how high and thick some of the branches to be cut were.
Trimming this overgrown oak tree was done using a set of Fiskars loppers that actually seized up on me after two cuts, a Fiskars hand saw, and a pair of ECHO hand pruners.

id say you did just fine on this tree and it looks good Brad. I'm not sure what the criticism is for from a few commenters. You trimmed it at the right time of the year and you took about 1/3 or less of total branches .I trim trees all the time and most of my customers don't even care if its the wrong time of the year even after I tell them, They just want it done. I don't think these trees are nearly as fragile as most people think they are. A lot of trees will start growing branches from the stump some months after you cut the whole thing down. I'm not saying its ideal to trim a tree incorrectly but i do think they are not nearly as fragile as some of these uptight people may think they are. I recently cleared branches shooting up from about 12 redwood stumps that the electrical company cut down several years ago. These branches shooting up from the stumps were probably 15 feet tall. Redwood bush's. All those stumps are still very much alive.

I used long hand cutters. Put WD40 on blades of cutters before use makes them work easier, and keeps the blade from rusting. My neck and arms started hurting. You can't use a chainsaw because most limbs are too small to cut. So I clipped as much by hand. Now I got a few limbs to cut with a saw. But I might use a old hand saw to cut 3 limbs. My oak tree is in a pasture, and I need to mow under it. The limbs were touching the ground.

Looks good as an initial trimming - but he clearly addresses the continued need for more shaping towards the end of the video.

...I say this for those who criticize the job. YES, it could use more "main leader" shaping and more, BUT he had to remove over 30% of the foliage and we aren't sure what the season is. My guess is - give the tree a year and then come back and deal with large limbs and leader determination.

For what I paid to watch this, I think I got some pretty good content.
Nice job, Brad and when we finally leave the arctic zone here in the NE I'm going out to do the same to a couple maples that have been scarring me for years when I mow around them. But I'll probably also make use of my Fiskars pole saw.
    Thanks!

LOL too funny :) I appreciate you watching and commenting! I think with power tools I will just offer it to any houses that need it for free if I am going to be mowing there. Would save me aggravation over time!

What a city you live in. Here where I live, you have to tie up the branches before they will take them. Time to get a chipper!!!!!

Macclenny, FL. We (meaning the city) has big trucks with hydraulic scoops on them that put everything into high wall dump bodies, then cart them to the limb debris site where everything gets burned.
