  • These shrubs and hedges are preventing access from the garage and front walk path, as well as completely blocking two front windows! Can a battery powered hedge trimmer cut them up, or will I be left explaining to the homeowner why I couldn't finish the job?! And just how long does a battery powered hedge trimmer last? Link to the ECHO trimmer I used: amzn.to/2DIMaP3 Will the Variegated Chinese Privet get the best of me?!

    I say, rip those puppies out. Plant something that will stay small.the builder of my house put in something rediculous like that, as soon as I saw one that was 20 ft high I knew it needed to go. Ain't nobody got time for that!

      @@ceedaddy The problem with that is that they still need trimming, and they smell like cat piss. The people who built my house planted these things all over the place, and they stink so bad I am contemplating ripping them out. Plus, they are damn huge, and I, as a 5'5 woman, I need help trimming them. They are still better than the monstrosities in this video, but they are not without their flaws as well.

    Really good job. It’s great to hear you talk about managing the customers expectations regarding the final look of an overgrown shrub. It will look pretty rough after the first cut and that it takes time to let the leaves bulk up again. Thank you!

    I live in Indiana and I just pruned mine back that were hanging halfway over the sidewalk. They look horrible. I do not own the home just rent it however the owner gave me permission. My wife is absolutely livid on how terrible they look right now. I laughed and stated they will grown in full or else how would they have gotten so big. They also had no shape which I dislike a great deal. But I will have to listen to her for maybe 6 month to actually next year but it is all good.

    I still can't quite fathom the degree of which people will let their properties get too. I rent a very rural little house on a 1/2 acre of "maintained" land, and I went and bought an edger, hedge trimmer, blower, string trimmer and ride on mower just so I could keep the maintenance up as it irks me so much to have a rough property...

    I was amazed to see that beautiful Palladian window hidden by that ugly shrub. It if were my house, I would just rip them out completely. I would plant some nice border flowers to accent the beautiful house instead of hiding and shutting out the light. In fact, I did have a shrub that was hiding the gas meter. I used a 9" pruning blade on my reciprocating saw to cut off completely. I chopped it up and left it on the curb for yard pickup. Made the house look much nicer.

    • @sparky6086
      @sparky6086 3 года назад +2

      Would've been best to cut them to stumps. It's hard to kill bushes, even if you try, and the stumps would quickly grow, almost as if new ones were planted.
      This would be a happy medium between expensive complete removal, and the just enough to not do the job/just enough to piss off the neighbors, which this video shows.
      Also, leaving them tall and out of proportion with the house leaves the house with that "abandoned" look, which it began with.

      We had yuccas at a rental we lived in, in Melbourne, Australia. We let them grow, when they reached the roof, we lopped the tops and planted them. By the time we left, it was a wall of yucca over the front window. When the yuccas were small and sparse when we first moved in, the front room would reach in excess of 50 degrees C in summer. It was bloody hot!! Leaving them there may be a shade thing, and it will help to keep your house cooler is summer. But yeah, you’re supposed to trim them for the winter to let the light in!!

      I could not agree more, they should never be higher than the lowest point of the window trim, and at the corners they should be at least three feet below the soffits/eves, I have seen rats use trees and large shrubs to access the roof/attic. An apartment building I lived in I could hear rats in the attic, the management cut the trees back away from the building by about 3-4 feet and when I went out that evening on my balcony for a smoke I could see DOZENS of rats in the tree looking up at the roof like they were trying to judge whether or not they could make the jump. There was a dead rat on the ground the next day too, tried to make it and failed. Landed on the patio below my apartment.

    I've used an electric B & D trimmer for years. It's been a workhorse but I no longer am, and wanted to make my job easier. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG Around the corners, the small side yard etc. was a pain to run the cord out to, so I bought this thinking I'd use it for touch-ups and hard to reach places. Well, I haven't used the corded one since!This is so light weight and so much easier. It has all the power I need because I start wearing down after about 20 minutes and I haven't run out of battery yet. It takes about two hours to charge. I've used it about twice a week for a month and still have line left too. My favorite feature is the blade inside the shield that keeps the line trim to where I don't even have to think about it. You can see from my pic that it's been heavily used and I probably should clean it more often. Very happy with it.
