      Yes, they had songs about all sort of wars all around the world and time periods, not only the World Wars or wars in Europe. For example, one of my most beloved songs by them is " Shiroyama " - the story of a Satcuma rebellion in Japan at the end of the 19th century. At the end of that rebellion a highly-advanced (for that era) Japanese Imperial Army faced the 500 last samurais, who's only had swords and flintlock muskets. They have songs about the sweedish king Carolus XII, about the sack of Rome in 1527 and the siege of Vienna in 1683, when the Osman invasion of Europe was finally stoped, just when THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED. And a lot more...

      Indiana is planning to do a large live stream hour by hour documentary on the Pearl Harbor assault and what happend will be delved into with great intensity.

    For the weirdness of the Germans referring to Bismarck as masculine, I believe the reasoning was twofold. Firstly, it was named after a male figure. Secondly, I *believe* it was to have further force projection - that the male reference would be scarier than a female one. 1

    • @YuzumiNoya
      @YuzumiNoya 4 года назад +2

      And you are right with that one.
      It was mainly Jargon on the Ship to call it a HE, because it would strike higher morale and might calling your Ship as a mighty HE rather than a SHE.
      The correct Historical and Naval term would still be SHE though.

    An interesting though morbid note, the commander of HMS Rodney, Sir Frederick Hew George Darlymple-Hamilton had a son, North Edwards Frederick Darlymple-Hamilton who was aboard HMS King George V serving as a gunnery officer responsible for main battery fire control during the battle with Bismark.
    With Bismark fatally damaged and effectively a burning wreck KGV had stopped firing, he watched through his range finder the ship his father was commanding continually pummel away at Bismark with everything it had. clearly able to see men abandoning ship he wondered why a cease fire was not ordered and the men left aboard were not allowed to abandon ship. later learning the his farther orders to 'keep firing until she is no more' north later stated in his memoirs that he was never able to see his father the same way again and that it created a distance between them for the rest of their lives.
    Another note, as Bismark was settling into the water and beginning to list Rodney closed to within a couple of kilometre of Bismark and dropped a torpedo, this torpedo hit Bismark and is the only instance in history of one battleship successfully torpedoing another.
    ultimately the torpedo strike made little difference to Bismark's fate as he received many torpedoes that day. it is not often reported that it was the crew scuttling by opening valved and intentionally flooding the engine rooms that finally sent Bismark to the bottom of the Atlantic and not the battle damage and torpedoes. when the wreck was discovered in 1989 his hull was found to be in remarkable condition with only 8 breaches all above the waterline. multiple large dents where battleship calibre shells had struck and failed to penetrate were noted across the belt armour showing the structural soundness of the ships design.
    yes the Royal Navy crippled the ship and destroyed her fighting capability but the crew fearing her capture decided to sink Bismark. Though he likely would have eventually gone down regardless.

    • @ericlanglois9194
      @ericlanglois9194 4 года назад +1

      Bismarck was not the only ship referred to as male, all German naval vessels were referred to as male, it's a cultural thing.
      Also, Bismarck's guns were fairly standard fare for it's time, the Americans had 5 battleships (including 3 Colorados from the 1920s and 2 North Carolinas) that had bigger guns and would go on to commission another 8 (4 South Dakotas and 4 Iowas) during the war. The Japanese had both the Nagato (2 ships) and Yamato (2 ships) classes with bigger guns and the British had the Nelson-class (2 ships).
      The only thing that was impressive about the Bismarck was it's speed, that was also it's biggest weapon and the reason the British feared it, with it's speed it could easily go around sinking convoys and be long gone before any meaningful fleet could intercept it. It's armor was also pretty good for it's time, which is one of the reasons it took so much to actually bring it down.
      Also the video's description of "Largest battleship ever built" is just a plain lie, both the American Iowa-class (of which 4 were built) and Japanese Yamato-class (of which 2 were built) were bigger. In fact the Largest battleship title actually is held by the Musashi, Yamato's sister ship by a slight margin.

    world war 2: after 3 minutes of battle the german battleship bismarck sank the hms hood (the mightiest battleship of the british empire during that era, back then called "the mighty hood") after a penetrating hit of a 2000 pound shell into one of the midship anti-air shell magazines. the whole section exploded, breaking the hood litterally apart midship. only 3 men of the 1700 crewmembers survived. the bismarck was commissioned 14th of february 1934 under the command of captain ernst lindmann and had a mission to raid the shipping lanes to great britain. in the battle with british swordfish torpedo bombers the bismarks rudder was hit and stuck in place. afterwards it was hunted down by a british fleet, pounding all they had into it, sinking the bismarck. it was 250 meters long and had a crew of 2000 people. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_battleship_Bismarck

    Funny how the brits partied like they had won a fight... From the german perspective, so many brits died only to achieve one single take down...
    Imagine you are so bad shooting, that you need 2800 shells, only 400 hit and it needs to get destroyed by its own crew at the end... Not to mention the loses of your own ships.

      Actually when the Bismark was commissioned in Aug, 1940, it was the largest warship of any kind in service anywhere in the world. The Japanese Yamato and sister ship, Musashi, were not completed until late 1941. Both were much larger than Bismark and her sister. The US largest battleships in 1940 were shorter and 6000 tons less than Bismark. The Iowa class, which were bigger with heavier armament, did not enter service until 1943. Still fortunate for the allies that one little Swordfish made one very historic torpedo hit on Bismark's rudder.

    Uk, US and japan all had aircraft's in the second war carrying torpedoes. Pretty sure some of the ships on Pearl harbor got hit by torpedoes dropped from Aircraft's. Midway that he refers to is the battle between USA and Japan in the battle of Midway. Its from their album Coat of arms
    I don't think they have a song about Bunker hill, but they have 3 about US in the war;
    Midway as mentioned,
    82nd all the way
    and
    Screaming Eagles about the 101st, 1

    • @AO968
      @AO968 4 года назад

      If I count all songs about US and war in general, the number gets higher:
      - Reign of Terror (First Gulf War; coalition led by USA)
      - Panzer Battalion (Iraq War; same as above)
      - Purple Heart (speaks for itself)
      - Nuclear Attack (bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki)
      - Midway (Battle of Midway)
      - Screaming Eagles (101st Airborne Division)
      - To Hell and Back (Audie Murphy)
      - The Lost Battalion (US 77th Division in the Battle of the Argonne)
      - 82nd All the Way (Alvin York)
      - Devil Dogs (nickname for the US Marine Corps)
      Unsure whether to count:
      - Into the Fire (Vietnam conflict. US not solely involved, but probably most well-known aggressors)
      - Soldier of Three Armies. Törni was originally Finnish, but ended up being involved with the Green Berets and changed his name to Larry Thorne, so maybe(?)
      - The Last Battle. It was a rescue mission in which the US and Germany fought together against the SS to liberate some prisoners. Probably counts more as a minor engagement than anything else.
      So, I come to at least 10 songs involving the US directly, and more if the criteria are very broad.

    they have wrote songs about all sorts of stuff. including Audie Murphey (To Hell and Back) NATO peace Keepers (Light in the black) and others their latest entire album is about WWI. They also don't shy away from difficult subjects like the Falkland war (Back In Control) and the Holocaust (The final Solution). 1

  • @coyotej4895

    He did make a mistake, the last and most accurate scans and visuals of the Bismark have found NO evidence that would support the notion of the British sinking the ship. In actuality the trapped crew within detonated the scuttling charges so the ship would not be captured. In doing this they knew they where sealing there fates but to there immense credit they did there duty. This is backed up here; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_battleship_Bismarck The man that found him (Bismark) and the Titanic and is one of the worlds leading authorities on the subject of how and whys of ship wrecks reported to the US and Royal navies the flowing; Our survey found no underwater penetrations of the ship's fully armoured citadel. Eight holes were found in the hull, one on the starboard side and seven on the port side, all above the waterline. One of the holes is in the deck, on the bow's starboard side. The angle and shape indicates the shell that created the hole was fired from Bismarck's port side and struck the starboard anchor chain. The anchor chain has disappeared down this hole.[137] Six holes are amidships, three shell fragments pierced the upper splinter belt, and one made a hole in the main armour belt.[138] Further aft a huge hole is visible, parallel to the aircraft catapult, on the deck. The submersibles recorded no sign of a shell penetration through the main or side armour here, and it is likely that the shell penetrated the deck armour only.[139] Huge dents showed that many of the 14 inch shells fired by King George V bounced off the German belt armour.[140] Naval historians William Garzke and Robert Dulin noted that the British battleships were shooting at very close range; the flat trajectory of the shells made it difficult to hit the relatively narrow target represented by the belt armour above the waterline, as shells that fell short would either ricochet up into the superstructure or explode on striking the water.[141]
    Ballard noted that he found no evidence of the internal implosions that occur when a hull that is not fully flooded sinks. The surrounding water, which has much greater pressure than the air in the hull, would crush the ship. Instead, Ballard points out that the hull is in relatively good condition; he states simply that "Bismarck did not implode."[142] This suggests that Bismarck's compartments were flooded when the ship sank, supporting the scuttling theory.[143] Ballard added "we found a hull that appears whole and relatively undamaged by the descent and impact". They concluded that the direct cause of sinking was scuttling: sabotage of engine-room valves by her crew, as claimed by German survivors. As to Why this matters, Its not about who did it, its about the courage and respect for the men and women who serve and the accomplishments we as a race have aspired to. To all who serve regardless of nation or branch, from me and mine, We thank you for honoring us all and hope beyond all hope perhaps, that nun of you will ever have to experience this type of horror again.

Sabaton covers battles from ancient Greece (Sparta) to the 1st Iraq War (Panzer Battalion), and yes they have a song called Midway. oh and they almost dies while shooting the video for Seven Pillars of Wisdom when they got into a car accident in Tunisia.

      Why would they learn about a ship that played a tiny part in the war? Schools don't have room in their curriculum for minutiae details most history classes cover multiple eras and conflicts, the wars and eras they do cover they only talk about the main events, for example, Normandy, Battle of Gettysburg, slavery, pilgrims etc. The only way you would learn about the Bismark or any other specific part of history is if you go to college/university or learn about it yourself outside of your particular schooling. Here in Norway we never learned about the Bismark and I doubt the Germans would learn about the American civil war in school.

      The whole American Education curriculum in Geography and History is either about the own country or, in case of wars, it's showed by American perspective. They barely mention the names of other countries involved in WWII, usually using the term allies. They just mention names of planes, ships, militar members of USA Army, Navy and Air Force.

    Here's a sentence but the one is further along at the end of a paragraph not the sentence(~_^)
    I sub to Sabaton History and the WW2 channel (The Time Ghost people) and they started but sold it to a different publication company The Great War (where most people know Indy is from TGW) and during the WW1 stuff they eventually did a colab with Sabaton about their latest album. Not long after that is when Sabaton HIstory was announced, with either Per or Joachim telling stories about where the songs came from, Indy doing the history the song is based on, and especially when Joachim is involved, really weird funny stories.
    If you were not trying to do reactions, I'd tell you to binge out on the Great War (weekly "News" updates of World War one from start to fininh and beyond (they still put out videos of just after the war with a different host) the Time Ghost Between Two Wars series, and they've started the WW2 a bit early (WW1 was done as a look back 100 years ago) deciding it didn't need a round decade so it is doing May 1941 right now.
    But then you'd not have any time for reactions let alone editing them to put out(~_^)

So if you don't name a ship Queen Elisabeth, but Bismarck it's obvious that it's gender follows the gender of the male politician from whom it has received the name. 1

    • @SweetLotus81

      @@speedygonzales7147 You are right, the battleship was named after Otto von Bismarck, his granddaughter even attended the ceremony and throw the bottle to name it "Bismarck", but no matter after what person a ship is named typically it is or was referred as a "she". It is an old naval tradition which nowadays seem old fashioned and sexist, but is still used by many sailors. One of my uncles served in the German navy until he retired and he called all ships "she" no matter what name they had.
      But, the captain of the Bismarck, Ernst Lindemann instructed his personal adjutant to refer to the ship as "he" rather than "she"; Lindemann considered the ship too powerful to be referred to as a female. So while many people in the time of the battleship Bismarck referred to her as a she, both ways are right, she and he, most of the ship's crew named the ship "he" because of the captain's wish.

      @@SweetLotus81 you are right. I have used myself the female gender for the Bismarck ship. After knowing of the preference of the captain to avoid the mistake, which it isn't really a mistake I used the Terminology: "Der Schlachtkreuzer Bismarck". The gender in Germany is build by the last word if you use combined words. Kreuzer is a male form of a ship class. I live in Germany by the way, and your uncle was perfectly right.

    At the beginning, Indy says "Germany's Bismarck was the largest battleship ever built." He must have meant the largest at the time of launch, because Bismarck's sister ship Tirpitz, launched the next year, as well as the British Vanguard, the four American Iowa-class, and the two Japanese Yamato-class were all bigger.
    Also, Bismarck's 380mm guns were not the biggest in the world, just the biggest on any German ship. The Japanese, Americans, and British all had battleships with guns of 406mm or larger (including HMS Rodney, one of the ships which helped destroy the Bismarck). The main advantage of the Bismarck was that he was faster than all of those until the Iowas came along, and so could avoid fighting them.
    Generally speaking, the Bismarck wasn't really that great of a design. Both the US and Britain managed to build similarly capable battleships on significantly less displacement. The King George V-class battleships and the South Dakota-class battleships were a good 7,000 tons lighter, but one of them could have stood up pretty well against Bismarck in a fight (at least once the King George Vs got the bugs in their guns worked out). They were just a little bit slower.
    Drachinifel has a really great special on the voyage of the Bismarck, which goes into a lot more detail. ruclips.net/video/n69kV4gVoDw/видео.html

    Vietnam has been covered already, I think several times.
    Generally the US gets about as much cover as everyone... Sweden a bit more (of course Sweden *was* the supreme military power of Europe, which at this time meant the world, for a while following the Thirty Years War) with Germany a close second but I suppose that's because we fouoght all the world (well no everyone the first time... but the first time was when everybody was about as evil as everybody else ;) ) two times and lost *spectacularly* ... well if you're at war with 200+ countries and your leadership regards the whole war as projection of internal politics... well... oh and is full of genocidal assholes.. that also doesn't help ;). I'd say the US shares or closely follows German in topical frequency, again, similar reasons, just for the second half of the 20th century with Germany clogging the first half ;).
    Best regards
    Raoul G. Kunz
