The Pepsi Contest That Killed 5 People

In 1992 Pepsi ran a contest in the Philippines that ended up killing 5 people.
The contest was called Number Fever, and the idea was simple:
Every evening the news would reveal a winning number, and if you had a Pepsi bottle cap with that number, you won a million pesos.
Pepsi had a system in place to ensure that there were only TWO winners each evening. But May 25th 1992, something went wrong...
Hundreds of thousands of Filipinos "won" that evening.
Pepsi was now expected to pay ten of BILLIONS of dollars in prize money - a debt they claim was impossible to pay.

You know the part of this that probably isn't considered much? Two people who did have the rare "winning" caps never got their money since the 349 was drawn instead of the indented winning number. What an odd twist of fate.
Is that true?; Did anyone get money from this, starting from the beginning?
@@davidshatusky8755 I think what he meant was that on the night 349 was drawn the two caps that were produced for that night weren't called, but I'm not sure there was even 2 caps produced for that night from the sound of it as the system said ot was 349 so it probably just produced two 349 for that day rather than a new number that hadn't been produced yet.
Omg I didn't even think of that. They probably never even knew they actually won lol just threw it away afterwards shaking their head lol
thought the same thing!
When you have specific low volume winners like this or like the Monopoly pieces on drink cups, I've wondered how you make sure the winners actually pay attention & don't toss their Boardwalk piece. One theory I have is they send out the winning pieces to the people that send in for the free play option. Then they know that player is paying attention & knows which pieces to watch for. I remember when I was a kid picking up and looking inside every discarded mountain dew can that I found when they had the game where you added up the numbers and I believe you had it to hit 21. The numbers were printed inside on the bottom of the can. All the numbers were even so the only way to win was to find an odd number like three.
Great storytelling... real voice and telling it concisely without a bunch of rambling.
And no "one hundred and"
I have friends from there. Hundreds committed suicide over it. They were at the end with nothing left, then this amazing event only for it to be taken away & they just.... ended everything for themselves. Very sad

Amazing story. You have the most interesting stuff. I’m amazed that this story isn’t more well remembered.
Yeah
I wasn’t basically born yet when this happend but my mom was. My mother has a photo of her back from the 90s holding pepsi while her tv was on in the background seeing that she got 349.
I wouldn't be surprised if any subsequent raffles by Pepsico and many other companies have a clause protecting them from such errors (and/or the raffle is worded so that even if such an error were to happen, they wouldn't need to pay more than they intended to. In other words, using a wording like "2 million bucks will be divided among the winners" or the like.)
This happened during the early 90's with the cola wars between Pepsi Co. and Coca Cola Co. Prior to this, they were doing the taste test and Coca Cola would wind up to be the supreme brand. Pepsi came up with this ingenious idea and literally pushed them to the top. I was an avid Coke drinker and switched to Pepsi because of this promotion. I also had one of the winning 349 bottle caps.
You won?
@@taz7914 the 349 ones where the ones that glitched, so no wonder he won.

Here is the explaining: ( if you don’t wanna read this whole thing then the reason behind the 5 deaths is because of riots.)so basically many people over the country were participating in this. So people all around the country were waiting for the winning number to be called. Since 349 is not a winning number the company we’re able to print that same number as many times as they want leading to many people having 1 or more of that number. Pepsi then had a meeting the same night to discuss how to solve this issue. They then decided to blame it on the technology and then just came to a conclusion that they would give everyone that won 500 pesos (18 American dollars) which was not even close to 1 million pesos. Many people were okay with this but many people were even more angry then before. After that riots broke loose which lead to 5 deaths. To sum it all up, the reason 5 people died is because of the riots.
I understand the video better now thank you
so people are angry because they got 500 pesos for using forged numbers? man i’m a bit disappointed at my country

I think it's tragic that it all happened over an error although I feel bad for everyone (I know what a big deal that money is and while not as life changing as before, it's still a big amount today), I can't help but think it's dumb. It was an error and the company would still give them everyone some money even though it wasn't as big as before but people still had to start riots over it. It's sad people had to die for it.
I love how this isn't a video. I love it how this sounds like a podcast. Really realaxing.

Imagine the sheer desperation of pinning your hopes and dreams to a number printed in a bottle cap.
Bro I remember I made an old analog horror video because I saw this video and was inspired by it and it’s still my most viewed video.
I remember this as a young elementary school boy those days in Manila. In TV it was seen how Pepsi really propped up the 'Number Fever' campaign, advertising it. I remember collecting bottle caps with my friends and classmates and looking for the cap that has the winning number which played for a million pesos. Then I noticed that the TV and print ads suddenly disappeared. Since I was still naive and ignorant about national events back then, little did I know at that time that people went beast mode about it.
Coca-Cola's still big here in the Philippines and I drink Coke and PepsiCo's Mountain Dew. The good majority of the people are still dirt poor, by the way.
Now coca cola besides Christmas plates 6 caps you get a Christmas plates now 6 caps you get a cool bucket hat for each week like 3. I like Pepsi not sure if they done anything similar but coca cola doing it right.
"A million pesos in 1992 was life changing for filipinos" it would have been nice to have had a conversion amount with todays money/dollars ..
Around 18
I looked for some exact figures on the 1992 PHP exchange rate but for some reason I could only find PHP/USD over the last 10 years.
He says 500 pesos at the time was 18 dollars. $36 = 1000 pesos. 1000 thousands in a million. $36,000 back then. What would that be today? Can work it out with inflation. $150k maybe?
It's approx 76 thousand current us dollars
This world is rapidly passing away and I hope that you repent and take time to change before all out disaster occurs! Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could. If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20.
Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13 over the course of 1260+ years. Revelation 17 confirms that the beast is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God.
Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!
Longest 5 minutes of my life. Best five minutes ever spent.
It reminds me of Pepsi's Seven Dwarfs promo....only six dwarfs can be found...the most elusive crown was Sneezy!
