For decades, Richard Montanez has been known as the man who invented Flamin' Hot Cheetos.
His legacy was a viral sensation, and millions of people were inspired by his story.
However, in May of 2021, Richard's account came into question after an article was published by the L.A. Times.
Did Richard lie? Was the entire story made up? Who ACTUALLY invented Flamin' Hot Cheetos?

    SMALL CORRECTION:
At 8:27 I mention that Richard worked to develop the "Sabritas" line.
The product line Richard worked on was actually called "Sabrositas", (not the same thing as Sabritas). Sabrositas was a line of products pitched specifically at the Latino market in the Los Angeles area.

Thanks for sharing, I saw the title before watching the movie and I'm glad I watch it afterwards because it was so enjoyable without the knowledge you dropped here! I know these movies about popular products of days past are now a big trend (Jobs, The Founder, BlackBerry, Air, Flamin' Hot) but I guess they're all cashing in on OLD GLORY. We all know Cheetos are bad for our health, and when consumed with Mt. Dew sh*t really hits the fan... But I guess it's nice to be inspired in this greedy corporate mess of a World we've found ourselves in. Also they did tell an inspiring tale of getting your life straight and transcending the places that hold us.
Still, it is written that the truth shall set us free, so a big thank you Zack for setting us free!

The best thing Frito-Lay did for Montanez was not suing him. The movie alone will bring good advertisement to Frito-Lay and I believe that they know that that's why they chose not to sue. But this whole movie and whole story is nothing but a farce packed full of lies, and I truly don't recall reading any article where they defended this man.

In a statement to USA TODAY in June, Frito-Lay seemingly backtracked on what it said in 2021.
The film is "Montañez's story, told from his point of view. His contributions to Frito-Lay are highlighted throughout the film, specifically his insights and ideas on how to better serve Hispanic consumers and engage the Hispanic community, a legacy PepsiCo continues today. We are grateful to him for that, and hope people enjoy the film."
Doesn't sound like they would be ready to sue if they are willing to concede Montañez brought something to the table as opposed to nothing whatsoever.

It could be that they let this guy handle the introducción of "Sabritas" products in the united states, because even though "sabritas" and "frito lay" are the same thing, they are now sold in the US as separate products, probably bc mexican customers would prefer to buy the labels they are accostumed to. The company has no record of who came up with the idea. His remembering of the timeline is off by just a few months. He did embellish the story somewhat - he didn’t make the name but I don’t think he’s purposely lying… let me explain. They kinda took his idea and pushed him out of the process but convinced him he was part of it. They had a whole team testing and modifying the product and another working on advertising. I do think Lynne came up with the name - she was in advertising. The company has no record of who originally came up with the idea. Shortly after this large setup of teams was active they gave him one researcher. You have to wonder why they would do that? Based on what I’ve read I think he created the original hot Cheeto (unnamed at the time) and given his lack of education it was easy for them to manipulate him and push him out of the process. They got started immediately while leading him to think they were working with him by giving him that one researcher. I’m regards to him claiming to create the name I’m unsure if he was so proud of his invention that his mind subconsciously embellished the story or if they gaslighted him the whole time.

Okay, Richard obviously lied. He's clearly lucid and doesn't have memory problems nearly severe enough to misremember something that integral to his life. It sounds like he's just the inventor of Flamin' Hot POPCORN, and a lot of his story could very well be pretty accurate if you just switch out the products. Although that makes it considerably less noteworthy or impressive. I could give him the benefit of the doubt in the sense that it's possible that other people started to conflate Flamin' Hot Popcorn with Cheetos, and Richard didn't want to correct them, so he rolled with it. But in any such case, a lie.

He made flaming hot Cheetos and they were trying to de-credit him and white wash the invention of them

  • @sabrinagiang
    @sabrinagiang Год назад +30

It sounds like the misinformation effect. He was credited for coming up with Cheeto’s Hot Flamin Popcorn. If you mention it enough times in speeches, it condenses more and more. “I invented Cheeto’s Hot Flamin Popcorn” turns into “I invented hot Cheetos” at that point, it’s probably means the same thing to him yet to others, the context changed entirely. So with enough repetition, he’s probably convinced himself that he did invent the entire line.

I agree with many other folks online, Frito didn't touch this for so long because it was good PR. Sounds like either way he was involved in the company to some degree. Pepsi Co wouldn't acknowledge him to any degree had not done some work there. The other guy remembering him for the Latino line seems plausible. So the guy overall developed the popcorn version of Flamin Hot Cheetos and some other products. Originally I thought the whole thing was BS and he didn't even work there. This is more than I'd previously read on the issue. Very informative. Should get interesting again when the movie drops.

to me it sounds like a big corporation eating a small fish. it is his word against them. the secretary could have gotten money to say something else . also other people as well.
When I saw the movie I was thinking, why he dont get monetary compensated , why he only get a higuer position at the work. Maybe the company played their cards good and gave him what he wanted but not what he deserved. For me he seems a naive person, used by a big corporation. And now they are tryiing to take away the credit from him, because they know to support his version would be very very expensive

I know for a fact when I was a kid growing up in Socal the ice cream truck would sell various products like pork rinds with hot spices, little lollie pops with spices on tip, mangos with spices on top.
You see all Montanez was doing was showing you what Mexico has been doing since probably 1800s.
