Marquiss embodies the tradition of Black Classical Music. The intelligence and sensitivity of his approach is amazing. The influences of Roy Hargrove, Nicolas Payton, and Freddy Hubbard and many others are very present in his playing. Although you can hear the past in his playing, as you should, he is beautifully his on. He is an initiate of Black Classical Music.
Today I fortunately stumbled upon the wonderful trumpet playing of Marquis Hill while checking out his video on how to produce sub-Tone on trumpet, very fortunately I must add! He sounds equally fantastic here and I've found a new trumpet idol! Kudos Marquis, you are a joy to listen to as is the WDR Big Band! Nice arrangement and Karolina Strassmayer's alto playing was superb too!
and the arrangement too by Florian Ross is just outstanding! once again a masterpiece! (btw: WTF are these arrogant people pressing thumb-down on such great work??? show some respect, even if it's not the music you like)
Hi Brian, the WDR BIG BAND is the jazz orchestra of "Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln (WDR)", which translates to "West German Broadcasting Cologne" and is a German public-broadcasting institution. :)
Something about this tune (probably the use of Maj7th chords) put me in mind of classic 1970s sounds. I'd love to hear the WDR band take on some Hank Levy tunes from that era! Hank wrote a lot for the Stan Kenton band and was known for his tunes in odd meters. My personal favorite is "Chain Reaction" in 13/8 (3-3-2-2-3). There's a nice version on RUclips by the U.S. Army Field Band, and one that's more "far out" by Don Ellis. The arrangement is bit less subtle and sophisticated than what WDR usually does, but perhaps they could bring more nuance to the sound.
Little too dead sounding for me. Let the trumpets and cymbals sound like they do in front of you. Good levels and recording though. EQ can be subjective.
What do you mean? None of the people in this room are perfectly alike to one another. Some have light hair, some have dark. Some are men, some are women. Some are young, some old. Some have dark skin, some light. Some wear glasses, some do not. And yet, they all have great musical talent, and they perform excellently together. What point could you possibly be making, pray tell?
I swear if I see one more big band video in the studio I'm going to trow up. One of the main reason jazz is dead is because jazz musicians haven't kept up with the times. We consume media so fast. And we need to be visually intrasted also. No one wants to see a bunch of dudes in a room for a music video. You need to tell a story . When you write the song your are telling a story . Now tell that same story with your video. I'm not just being a cenique I truly want jazz to be hear by more people. I hope you see past the harsh comment and understand my point.
Jazz is not dead. This video has received more than 42000 views at the time I responded. It is about the music, not technology. This is something that is missing with the videos of today. Quality can not be compromised or mimicked. It has to stand on its own.
Sorry, but if you were going to create a rock style video with big production values, we wouldn’t get nearly as much music output. If you subscribe with WDR, you are constantly rewarded with new, challenging big band sounds that have great variety and outstanding quality.
If you don't like it, don't watch. The ironic thing about your criticism is that this song is very much modern jazz. 😂 It's just arranged for a big band setting. Marquis Hill flirts with many genres within jazz.
That trumpet & Alto blend perfectly 👍😎
Agree completely, but it's annoying that the pan is reverse to the image (trumpet at the right and alto at the left)
their intonation is on point! perfectly in tune
Holy hell, this is the first time I've heard Marquis Hill, he's outstanding!
Monk Competition winner!!! Former winners are the likes of Joshua Redman
Listen to his albums. Modern Flows Vol 2 is fantastic. And his arrangement of Minority is great too

1:27 when the whole band comes in is amazing, I’ve rewatched it like 50 times
Love the piece musically, and the piano solo is phenomenal!!!
Stunning chart. Thanks for The WDR orchestra for the revival of big band music. Love YOU ALL.
Thank you, Givi!
Agreed! WDR is consistently brilliant. Every new collaboration and video is gold.
@@meezydarko Hey Yung, thank you very much! The WDR Big Band likes to share their production with the audience all over the world!
Ah the joys of playing bass trombone. "Thirty nine, two, three, four. Forty, two, three, four..."
With you on that one, it's fun to play phat, but there's a lot more you don't get to play.
😫😫😂

He has the most beautiful tone.

Marquis Is great! Shades of Kenny Wheeler in syncopation and tonal color. love it.

Not really bro, he sounds very unique, pretty sure he's not trying to imitate that dude

Thank you very much, Agustin!
That tone from Karolina is smooth as butter.
Marquis is no slouch either...🤨
@@iuhoosier1 Yea, for sure. I went to go listen to Marquis Hill live in concert with Braxton Cook two summers ago. Awesome musicians.

@@WDRBIGBAND thankyou. Rundfunk sounds cool in English
WDR puts the funk in rundfunk

Soft and gentle. \(>n/)/

Absolutely an incredible band but a tip of the hat to the camera men!
Billy passed the test
😎 Slava!
fantastic performance!! It's a shame that piano solo had some mic clipping that couldn't be fixed.
Wow that Alto sounds great! What mpc is she using?
Daniel Craig moonlighting as a bari player...
I thought the bass player was sitting on another bass
but why tina fey playing sax??
TOTALMENTE FRIO, ACADEMICO A NO MÀS. NO SE PUSIERON MIS PELOS DE PUNTA.NO.....

Why is the alto soloing with him? His vibe is so nice until she comes in and spoils it IMHO. Let the special guest have it.
Something here is not like the others...

Hi Jack! Are you referring to skin color? What role does skin color play in the music played in this video? We do not understand the question!
alto sax too much vibrato. outing off the mix yo.
Nice
Thank you, - do you know this one as well with Marquis? ruclips.net/video/Mqy3PbRLeQc/видео.html
