It really does make a difference in the life of a trumpeter when those who are more accomplished share their techniques and wisdom. Thank you very much!
I've come to realize that this technique is recognized immediately and accepted by many . Folks usually don't remember your solo but they will remember your tone.
You sound fantastic, Marquis! Thanks for sharing, great explanation on how to do sub-tone! I've been trying to do this for years and after watching your video I figured it out. I'm a bit of a muscle bound lead player, but I've been working on just using just breath attack as opposed to a tongue attack, the last few months and coupled with your advice, sub-tone finally clicked for me today! You have a beautiful sound with or without this technique, but for years I admired Freddie Hubbard's use of it as a player who came up in the 1970's and wanted to add it to my playing, now thanks to you, I now can and with practice it will develop. You can teach an old dog new tricks! Thanks again, Tony Gorruso
Great stuff. btw Marquis Hill was at first playing the beautiful ballad "Again, never" composed by the great bassist Bill Lee. This theme was included in the film Mo' better blues in 1990, directed by Bill's son, Spike Lee, along other tunes also composed by Bill Lee on that same movie. Later on in 1999 the song was released on the CD Free to be of Donald Harrison.
been listening to trumpet for years i never heard of subtone! WOW! I can hear the difference when pro use it such as Nicholas Payton, Roy hargrove,...etc...you can hear that particular style in mo better blues movie with Danzel washington. What a versatile instrument! Your particular sound does come from how you hear it in your head

Looks like one made by Harrelson, I pretty sure Hill has one of them and because Harrelson does some pretty funky custom work on a lot his horns it is likely one of his creations.
When trying to get a unified sound it is bad to have different playing styles. You have to have a good sound to begin with to add other stuff, and these techniques only apply to solos. Doing pitch bends is good practice though.

Love the fact that he played a ballad from "Mo Better Blues" as an example. This movie is a Jazz trumpet player maker for damn sure !
I've heard this style many times, but never considered how it was produced. thanks. very interesting
Christian scott and Ambrose akinmusire use that technique too. Really feels like the horn is speaking
Christian scott truly mastered it

Man, I appreciate your rock solid trumpet sound. Keep up the great work you are doing.
The Meditation Tape EP was one of the best jazz records I’ve heard in awhile. It’s sort of atmospheric too, I love it.
Love it! Christian Scott also uses the same technique, but I think he calls it the "whisper" technique
Yes made popular by cat anderson
Very well presented. Thank you for taking the time to share your techniques.
Thank you Marquis. Beautiful sound.
God bless you kind sir !
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!!!
That video is amazing! Thanks for sharing this very successful explanation for how to produce Sub-Tones!
I don't even play trumpet, I just love this dude's sound.
I didnt even know you could do a half pitch shift without the keys. You are a master sir
Absolutely. Beautiful

Terence Blanchard uses sub-tones a lot
@@alfordelliott6943 it makes sense...he was the one who played 🎺 in mo better blues
Very nice playing! BTW, that famous recording of "Body And Soul" was by Coleman Hawkins, though Lester had a beautiful tone, too.
And the master of sub tone was Ben Webster.
@@gregbush608 Ben Webster used to almost exclusively! It’s everywhere in his playing
Some say there was more air escaping out of Ben Webster’s horn than going through it 👍
thx a bunch Marquis, wish I had the string of notes starting 3'57 into the video, too fast for me to parse out...
Great video. Love that you played that Mo' better song! My Ben Webster records are coming out today...
I have used breath attack only when I practice Carmine Caruso's etude. It's great idea to use it as Prez used. I'll try it next gig.
I like uour tone and technique
Great video , thanx ..
a true master of this “airy sound” is Till Bronner ..

Mo better blues movie so good l love it
VERY good jazz trumpet sound lesson thank a lot
Excellent trumpeter player!!!!!!!
Freddie Hubbard my favorite soft tone player
I could listen to him playing fluffy lines all day long, wish I could do that half as well.
Tnx for the technique marquis!
Thank you
Excellent tips...
Hell Yeah Marquis!!!
Heard saxophones doin this and I had to learn it.
Does the rubber O-ring on the first valve slide bother you guys too?
Does anyone finds more difficult to make subtone in some notes than in others?
That’s what I sound like when I play with chapped lips.
CapAb Artz and the master of sub tone was Ben Webster.
this vid is great
is this technique also used on clarinets?
Thank you!
What do you mean by seep thru?
Marquis, your sound is warm and dark and so very musical. May I ask you if that is a Denis Wick MP?
No, that's a Bach mouthpiece, looks like a 10 1/2C.
@@DrSmallberries Denis Wich not Bach
@@DrSmallberries how can you tell is that size?
@@cardosuxxxxxx he's a magician
Could someone tell me the song he is playing at the beginning?
Max MacGrzl it’s called Again Never. Branford Marsalis and Terence Blanchard, from the soundtrack to Mo Betta Blues.
Cool!! Ty!
That's a beautiful trumpet. Anyone have any idea what that model is?
Looks like one made by Harrelson, I pretty sure Hill has one of them and because Harrelson does some pretty funky custom work on a lot his horns it is likely one of his creations.
It’s a Raw Brass Trumpet (RBT)
Niiice..im practicing trumpet for some years ,but have bad bad bad sound..I decided to stop..frustrating killed me.
So apparently I’ve been playing my trumpet wrong? But now I know it’s not entirely wrong
So ‘air’ is a subtone? Not convinced I want that, but thanks for your input.
Two years ago I did stuff like this and everybodu told me this is wrong. Especially lead players

I guess you speak about Ben Webster's body and soul intro....
Aint you good 😀👍
*Koi Mil Gya* when jaadu arrives in his UFO
Again never 👊🏼
In a nutshell, what Marquis is doing is called pitch-bending. It's like what Miles Davis does as an alternative to vibrato.
What also helps? play on a Monet horn lol
