- In this video I show how to catch Bowfin (Amia calva) in the Florida Everglades. I have fished for bowfin for over 25 years and in that time I have learned that fresh cut bait is by far the best bait to catch these fish. Bowfin are a prehistoric fish that fights harder than a largemouth bass, and bowfin are able to live in places other fish cannot. I also included videos of Oscar, Mayan cichlid, Jaguar Guapote, and peacock bass I caught.
Bowfin (Amia calva) is one of the most unique fish in North America. Bowfin are known as ''living fossils'' since their ancestors have existed for millions of years. Relatives of bowfins lived when dinosaurs walked the Earth, which shows how tough these fish are. Bowfin are one of the most underrated fish, and pound for pound fight harder than an equal size bass. Average size bowfin are around 20-26 inches long, and any bowfin over 28 inches is a trophy sized bowfin.
Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) cichlids are one of the most sought after exotic species of fish in South Florida. Many people travel to South Florida to fish for these fish since they fight hard for their size and can be caught using panfish fishing techniques. Lots of people keep Oscar as aquarium pets since they are beautiful and have an interesting personality. Oscar are native to Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, French Guiana, Ecuador, and other South American countries. Average size Oscar is under 10 inches and any Oscar over 11 inches is a trophy sized Oscar cichlid.
Butterfly Peacock bass (Cichla ocellaris) are the most sought after exotic species of fish in Florida, and many consider this fish as the most popular sportfish in South Florida. People from all over the World travel to South Florida to catch these beautiful fish. Butterfly peacock bass are native to Venezuela, French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname. Average size butterfly peacock bass is around 12 to 17 inches, and any butterfly peacock bass over 18 inches is a trophy sized butterfly peacock bass.
Jaguar guapote cichlids (Parachromis managuensis) are also known as Jaguar cichlid, Managuense cichlid, Guapote tigre, and other names. They are native to Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. Jaguar guapote are usually less than 10 inches long, and any jaguar guapote over 13 inches is a trophy sized Jaguar guapote cichlid.
Mayan cichlids (Cichlasoma urophthalmus) are also known as Atomic sunfish and Mexican mojarra. They are native to Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and other Central American countries. Average Mayan cichlid is usually less than 10 inches long, and any Mayan cichlid over 11 inches is a trophy sized Mayan cichlid.

Wow so many nice fish. It's hard to pick a favorite. Those were nice size bowfins and quality cichlids, the peacocks were really pretty too. But I think my favorite was the small jaguar since it is missing from my lifelist. Good fishing. 👍
Peeling Line Thank you for watching! I am happy you enjoyed the video. The bowfins were fun to catch, along with the cichlids. The jaguar guapote population in the Everglades has increased in the past couple of years, so it is a great place to fish for them. I will watch your newest video later today.
@@Grouperhunter I think it will be the only place I catch them. Unless, they have them in Texas or California.
Peeling Line I will not be surprised if there are Jaguar guapote in other states, since these fish are popular aquarium fish that have been introduced in many places outside their native range. I am sure you will catch them, especially if you fish the areas I shared with you.
Man that looks like so much fun, I really need to get there for some fishing some day. Nicely done!

Fish is my Hobby Official Thank you for watching! I am happy you enjoyed the video. You can put on the notification on and it will let you know when I post a video. The Everglades is a beautiful place thriving with native and exotic species. Yes it is amazing how similar bowfin and snakeheads are, even though bowfin are native to North America, and snakeheads are native to Asia. Peacock bass are one of the most beautiful fish, and they are very fun to catch. I will watch your newest video later today.
@@Grouperhunter the notification is always on my friend

@@Grouperhunter it was good fishing man I watched the first 10 min then had to go but fishing looks great there Are those oscars you catching there and what is the fish with the stripes called
Time Epic Videos I appreciate you taking the time to watch my video. Oscar cichlids have a red ring eyespot on the caudal peduncle, peacock bass have a yellow ring eyespot on the caudal peduncle, and Mayan cichlids have a blue ring eyespot on the caudal peduncle. Jaguar guapote have several black eyespots along the lateral line extending to the caudal peduncle. Please let me know if you have more questions on the fish I caught in this video. I hope to post more Everglades videos in the next couple of months.
@@GrouperhunterThank you for that information regarding the fish identifications I wonder if Oscars were introduced here or are they found naturally here
Time Epic Videos You are welcome. Oscar cichlids are native to South America, they were introduced into Florida in the 1950's. They are one of the most sought after fish in Florida since they are beautiful fish, give a good fight for their size, and are delicious. There are people that travel from other states to the Everglades to fill up coolers with Oscars so they can eat them for months when they go back to their home states. One of the best things about Oscar fishing is that you can catch a lot of them from the shore, since they are eager biters and are thriving in the Everglades.
