@@shredhead21 neopolitan sorry 😐 ducking autocorrect
Italians woud not consider this as pizza, it's an entirely different type of food, or maybe even an offshoot of what they usually consider pizza, asme with chicage deep dish. It seems that if you put the correct label on things Italians don't seem to get so worked up about the american versions of italian food
edit to add: I wrote this out early in the video, but Mr Z essentially said what I thought he would say
@@prodigypenn What Italians? The Neapolitans? Milanese? Sicilians? Do you speak for all of them, though it appears you yourself are not Italian?
I hate all these comments that claim "Italians" are some monolith. It is HUGELY regional, and Italians very often disagree on what constitutes the same dish. Mr. Z's "not a pizza" means "not the very strict Neopolitan definition of pizza." This is basically Sicilian sfincione, which was brought over to North America and is very much considered a variety of pizza. Bread base, tomato sauce, cheese.
@@prodigypennthis is literally Sicilian style pizza adapted to the kitchen tools the Sicilian immigrants had available to them in 1940s Detroit.
As a Detroiter, I say THANK YOU for trying real Detroit style pizza. So many people think if you put the sauce on top it’s Detroit style! The pan is SO SO important! Love the reaction!
its not pizza, the same way you detroiters loose your mind over putting ketchup on hotdogs. your pizza is not pizza, I'm not saying it doesnt taste good, but more like a lasagna/casserole

As a midwesterner, Detroit style really is the hidden gem of pizza in America imo - should be much more popular than it is
It’s getting there. I live in Baltimore and I had never heard of it like 5 years ago, now it’s everywhere around here
Yeah, same in Denver
Although I had heard of it because I'm from Detroit

Detroit style pizza is very popular in Korea, too! A restaurant called Motor City sells Detroit style pizza in Itaewon, Korea and people line up 30 minutes before it opens. I was surprised that it was very delicious when I ate it for the first time. I want to visit America someday and try the original Detroit style pizza.🍕
I watched the video's of it being made in Korea and as a Detroit-native I must say that it appears as if your countryman have truly mastered making the Detroit-style pizza. The video's make it appear absolutely delicious!

I love Detroit!
Detroit has been beat up by the media for too long. People do not know that it has been improving the past couple of years.
*As a Detroiter I approve of these pies. I was afraid you wouldn't be getting a real Detroit style pizza.*
The crust is a LOT taller than Buddy's, but yeah, not bad.
@@alittlebitgone for sure taller. Still looks good though.
Buddy’s invented it, but as most pizza, New York perfected it. Lions, Tigers, and Squares, and Emmy Squared took it to the level it’s at internationally today.
@@alittlebitgone looks great though... I know Buddys was the original. But there are a lot of other places here that have Detroit style or you can just ask for Detroit style crust and than get whatever you want on it. Jets is one of my favorite
I felt the same way! Really looks like their doing good work across the pond. 🇺🇸🇬🇧
As someone from Detroit, you have to try Buddy’s, Hungry Howie’s, Vernor’s, Faygo and Better Made chips next! I’m sure all other Michigan viewers would agree that we actually have a lot of Detroit/ Michigan/ Midwest exclusive foods/ brands that are iconic and worth trying! ❤️
Also, a real Flint coney dog, Halo Burger, pasties, Faygo, and Mackinaw Island Fudge.
There’s no soda pop like Faygo - especially the Red Pop and Rock ‘n Rye.
Buddy's isn't the king anymore, honestly it's not that good anymore. Much better spots now
You made me homesick! The only ones I can occasionally get are the pops. I do prefer Detroit coneys, fight me flint! 😂
Buddys and Hungry Howies is two different levels though lol
The end with Mr. Z was perfect! I grew up on Detroit style, so I'm loving that people elsewhere are finally discovering it.

I’m from CA and they had Detroit style at some places out there but they didn’t call it that. It’s a great way to make a pizza
As a Michigander, I feel so happy that they are enjoying this pizza style. Come to Detroit and try the original!
Being a Londoner, I was pleasantly surprised to find this Detroit Pizza spot just a 20-25 minute drive from me - big thanks for the tip, Jolly!
Last year, while visiting family in Detroit, I was initially hesitant about their renowned square pizza. But, after sampling pizzas across Europe, including Italy, and various US cities like Chicago, NY, and LA, I'm convinced that Detroit's distinct style is the best. The blend of flavours and that crunchy, cheesy crust is unmatched! And for the record, I'm team pineapple on pizza!
The chefs at these restaurants have to love these guys. Their reactions are so pure. Has to make a chef happy seeing someone react to their food with joy.
As a Detroiter, it's wild to see our Pizza on here! You guys need to come here and try local pies. I recommend Loui's, Green Lantern, Grandma Bob's, or Michigan & Trumbull.
Loui’s and Cloverleaf!
Them Green Lantern subs though……
Shield's in the Maccabees building is really good, too.
I’m from Chicago and am sad to say I never heard of Detroit pizza. It looks amazing and I definitely have to try it!
Watching this made me crave Grandma Bob's from the other side of the state.
Sicilian girl here! We call this pizza style “sfincione” and grandmas still make it 🥰
No offense but I doubt the formula is the same. I had sfincione from a Sicilian place and it tasted nothing like Detroit Pizza. Bread is much worse and it doesn't have the outside caramelized cheese, not the same cheeses. It was so much worse then Detroit Pizza I was tempted to give it back and ask for a refund due to the level of disappointment. Like I was having an existential crisis due to how disappointing it was.
@@nicholasjh1 oh I’m sorry you were having an existential crisis over pizza 😭😭😭
Must have been the original product which developed into nowadays Detroit Pizza over the years 🍕
I feel the big difference between Detroit style and Sicililian is that Detroit always has lots of crispy cheese on the edges which is the best part. Never been to Sicily but comparing to that style in NYC.
@@nicholasjh1 I mean...Detroit style pizza literally originated from Sicillian style pizza. They are obviously different, but they are two of the closest styles of pizza. No need to be over-dramatic and rude about it. But yes, they are not the same, and are made differently
The couple who invented Detroit style pizza were Gus and Anna Guerra who used Anna’s family’s “sfincione” dough recipe. So you are spot on. The big difference between Detroit style and Sicilian style is that Detroit is cooked in pans that are more similar to a cast iron skillet vs a cake pan. It causes the edges to Carmelize while the interior stays airy. This is a pizza inspired by Sicilian cooking with a Detroit twist, hopefully you have a chance to sample our cities love letter to your style.
HAHAHAHA I love that they were so determined they hauled the pizza all the way to him because they were determined to hear his thoughts on it RIGHT NOW
A thing to note, if you came to Detroit to try the pizza at Buddy’s (probably the most classic place people will recommend) they use Wisconsin Brick cheese.
They need to go and sample Buddy's, Shield's, Sorrento's, and Cloverleaf for a true test of Detroit pizza.
@@mariannedelano7983 Can't forget Loui's. Though they've been hit or miss since the pandemic, when they hit they hit harder than the rest
@Jagermaster13 I used to live on Shields Street in Detroit in 1984/85. I was close to Buddy's but across the street from Shield's. I preferred Shield's. I also lived near Loui's but only ate there once in like 1992. I wasn't impressed. I live a couple of miles from Sorrento's and Cloverleaf now. I prefer Sorrento's a tiny bit over Cloverleaf. I should probably try Loui's again though.

From mysterious Bond-villain sandwich creator to basically their Godfather. He has style, connection, knows everything and everyone, plus he has become the authority on everything pizza, so much so that they share all the bizarre and amazing pizzas they encounter. From calling him all the way from Texas about pickle pizza on a stick to delivering him the new thing they discovered, because they like him and respect his opinion so much (also, I believe Ollie wants to prove him wrong someday 🙃)
This is the most wholesome friendship development I've seen in a long time and it's so nice to see!
So true! He is really one of the boys - absolutely love how Ollie finds every opportunity to slag him off about Italian food and love Mr. z’s steadfast denial that anything is better than Italian food. The cameo at the end was the perfect end to what was such a fantastic video.
A very unexpected friendship. They have truly turned into friends for life
Reminds me of the Really Dough? videos with Mark Iacono (founder of Lucali's pizza in NY, pizza purist) and Scott (hosts the pizza tours in NY). Scott would bring all kinds of pizza to Mark that would challenge Mark's strict definitions of pizza.
Took the words right out of my mouth!
My mom likes to reheat the left over slices on the stovetop in a pan on low for about 10-15 minutes. It re-crisps the bottom of the slice.
Ollie calling a pizza the best one he had in his life MEANS something, people!!!

I think my favorite thing about jolly videos like this is that they love the food so much that they want to share it and have the film crew try it too. It’s not just about Josh and Olly enjoying it. It’s for everyone to experience
Since Ollie was talking about his final meal it would be fun if you two made a video about all your favorite last meals
This is the first time I have ever seen a pizza crust like this since many years ago, when on a very rare occasion, my Italian grandmother (in NY state) ordered from a restaurant a Sicilian pizza from a very, long-standing restaurant/pizzeria. My grandmother never ate out; she always preferred her own cooking, and rightly so. But this pizza was just as it had been for many decades, and it was really wonderful. She explained that no one still makes the base like this. I makes me happy to see somewhere in Detroit they are still doing it that way. It’s very authentic. The toppings were: a special marinara, lots of fresh, Italian seasoning with an emphasis on the basil, a little of finely grated *authentic* Parmesan, extra virgin olive oil (true olive oil) and anchovies slightly rinsed, dried, chopped and baked on top like one of the seasonings.
BTW: It’s also good to see that Detroit, even after the impact of the expanding and steeply contracting economy, still has some of the best American restaurants.
I'm always nervous when I see the boys trying American staples in England because I'm always thinking "ehhh... is this REALLY legit?" but once I heard Ryan with an American accent all my fears were assuaged. (not to say a Brit can't go to Detroit, fall in love with the pizza, and bring it back, but let's just say I've had "Mexican" food in England and it is not right... at all... as I'm sure with a lot of ethnic foods in the US lol)

Yes, it's kind of its own thing. In the USA, we have the New York style and Chicago style as two of the pillars of pizza... but Detroit style is a hidden gem. It's nothing like New York style, and you might compare the thickness to Chicago style except that the thickness is due to the fluffy bread/crust. It's not dense with stuff like Chicago style. And it's really defined by baking in that pan, with the crispness of the outer crust. There's nothing quite like Detroit pizza. It stands on its own.
I've lived in New York, Chicago and California. Being from Detroit, I always felt I was biased. After my travels, I was right all along. Detroit style is truly the best.

I’m also from metro Detroit and I can confirm, Buddy’s is the TRUTH 💯
Agreed Buddy's is amazing. Every time I visit the Detroit area I stop for pizza at one of the locations.
NIce to see there are so many fellow fans from Motown.
I am a fellow fan from Traverse City and I have had buddy’s pizza for my birthday dinner for over a decade!!!
American pizza and Italian pizza are forever different. Both beautifully amazing. But Italians got to get over their aggressive frustration over American pizza and how much it truly is loved. Because it is still their families/ancestors that moved here to even make it possible. So different but both equally so beautiful.
I’m going to London next month!! I was planning to go there!!! I’ll be staying in a Airbnb just a 10 minute walk from there!! 🍕 excited!!
Detroit style is the hidden gem of the 3 American styles. It's like a secret club we enjoy that if you know, you know.
Detroit style pizza is so underrated...and I'm a NYer saying this
Don't take away from NY pizza either...... The US has taken pizza and put some great new twists on it so in all reality, it just depends on your mood and tastes which one fits the bill!
As a fellow NYer I can confirm that the only other style of pizza I will spring for other than NY or a classic Neopolitan is Detroit Style.

Detroit born and raised, our pizza is top tier, thanks for reviewing it
As a southern Italian, the Detroit Pizza in Commercial Street is one of my favorite pizza places in London.
As a Detroit native with Sicilian roots, Buddy's Pizza is the most popular in Michigan. MY FAVORITE spot in SEOUL is MOTOR CITY PIZZA, they have a few locations now.
I love the JACKSON 5, it is absolutely delicious. Detroit would love to have you visit. You should try Motor City next time you are over to Korea.
...OH and get the fried mushrooms, its a classic!
Yes!! Buddy's is the BEST!
Moto city is soooooo gooodd
Dang from Detroit to Seoul…living the dream
I want to travel to Seoul just to do a food binge. Yum! I’m jelly you probably already have experienced it
Come to Detroit. The pizza is on another level and so is the shawarma, coney's and soul food. So much to try.
This fills my heart with joy! A DSP joint in London? Awesome! I grew up on the original, Buddy’s Pizza, and one of its offshoots that is better, Louis.
During Americas alcohol prohibition, Buddy’s Rendezvous was a speakeasy, an illegal bar. Gus Guerrera would serve his version of the Sicilian pie, or granny slice. After prohibition, Buddy’s kept the bar, and the pizza became a Detroit staple.
Much love from the Motor City, and me, just a kid from Detroit.
That may have been the BEST better help endorsement I have heard. Good on you!
Born and raised in Detroit, it’s a shame more people don’t know about Detroit style pizza! You have to come do an extended episode in Detroit. It’s a melting pot where you will find a plethora of different foods from many different cultures and they’re all so good! Greek, Polish, Mediterranean, Mexican, etc if you want it, you will find it in Detroit! Make sure you try Faygo pop (don’t call it soda!), our microbreweries, and our apple orchards (if in season). It’s a foodie’s paradise 🤤
i walk to shell every now and then for some faygo! only pop today you can get for under 2 bux a bottle cold!
granted its a 2 mile walk each way... hell weight loss for my fatass
I NEVER THOUGHT I’D SEE THE DAY!!! DETROIT STYLE PIZZA ON JOLLY!!! 🎉 ppl rave about Chicago and NY style pizza, but the crispy edges on Detroit style pizza is where it’s at
Love Detroit style. Still wanting them to try St. Louis style though...
❤❤❤❤TOTALLY AGREE
I was born in Detroit and have lived back in suburban Detroit since I was 12 (67 now) and I think Detroit style pizza has the fabulous combination of being, both, heavy and light at the same time. 🙌🏻
I absolutely love his laugh!!! Great video!!
I woke up to the joy that JOLLY has a new video! Now, I want to see these two do a food tour through all 50 states.
If I could I would “like” this comment a million times. 😊
I live in western Michigan but have had Detroit style many times. Love it. There some great foods here and it would be fantastic if the Jolly team came here.
Being from Detroit, it's always good to see someone appreciating our pizza. We have a pretty good barbecue scene too.
My wife is from Detroit and has been a long time fan and would love it if you went to Detroit!. She got me watching you guys a few years ago and watching your videos is something we enjoy doing together.
before I even watch, I gotta say this is huge for us JOLLY fans in Detroit lol I’m also shocked there’s a Detroit style pizza joint in London. dope
As a Chicagoan I can agree that Detroit style needs more love. It’s my favorite. 1) best deep dish in Chicago has some influence in pequods does the burn cheese crust. 2) favorite pizza I had in New York was a Sicilian slice at prince street which Detroit style is a form of Sicilian.
If you come to Detroit let your fans know, there is a PLETHORA of food options here, would be our pleasure to show you guys around - Buddy's Pizza, Polish Food in Hamtramck, Middle Eastern Food in Dearborn. Of course Detroit Coney Dogs from Lafayette or American Coney. Better Made Chips, Faygo and Vernors.
Thanks to you two guys, I’m making plans on visiting your country just to try its food. I enjoy your channel very much.
