Starting Aggressive Inline Skating at Age 62 - Bad Idea?

- I have recently starting learning aggressive inline skating with my son. Its been painful, but super fun and a great way to spend time together. If my body can survive this initial learning phase, maybe I can develop some real skills. Is it a bad idea? No Way!
Before trying aggressive skating, you should become comfortable on the blades themselves. Practice until you can confidently street skate and then move onto tricking. I commend you Sir. I hope you never stop.
Great advice and exactly what I have been working on lately. At my age you feel like the "over the hill" clock is ticking on you and its hard to work for incremental improvements when they come so slowly, but they are coming.
I do aggressive inline for over 25 years and i know how hard the first time is
. You know how to fall and thats one of the first things you have to learn .
You are doning great 👍👍👍
You experienced guys make it look so easy! I am making progress and that makes me happy. My falling is getting a lot of practice too, but it's just part of the process.
Don't look down, you're going to go wherever you're looking, so don't look down. Keep it up, you're off to a good start. ✌️
This is seriously so cool. I wish more parents would join in like this with their kids, it's a huge win-win for everyone.
Thank you. I try to be an example to my kids of physical activity and healthy behavior and not just sit on the sidelines and try and relive my glory days thru them. The whole purpose of starting this channel was to challenge other older adults to do the same and show them its totally possible no matter what your age.
I started five years ago at 49. You're doing great 👏👏👏
I enjoyed this one greatly my man. New Subscriber here. As a father, and one who is pushing 40, thoughts about these exact things come to me regularly. At 37 I can guarantee the skills, coordination & balance are all still there to inline skate. I also did it regularly as a kid/teen. But how much longer before it doesn't come as naturally anymore. The only detriment to aging I've noticed at this point is the need to stretch more in the mornings and injury recovery seems to have slowed slightly. I give you big props for doing this at 62...however, watching you has cemented my belief of staying active helps you age slower & tighten up less at the joints.
Definitely stay with mobility and quickness training. I have run long and slow for so many years, its a tough road coming back to anything that requires quickness and mobility. I have a bad knee from a motorcycle accident when I was younger and jumping is extremely painful, but I am working on that. Don't slow down!
@@theaverageoldguy Being young and wild definitely doesn't age well. Lol. If only we knew how we'd feel later in life...probably wouldn't make a difference, hahahahaha.
at 62 you are taking those falls like a champ
Impressive! I can see how moves with stronger impacts like dropping of a box or jumping could be really hard at an old age, but you did great with the ramp and just flowing around the skatepark is super satisfying. Keep it up!
I’m “only” 42 but i have to recommend that if you’re going down this path: thick hip pads and elbow pads. If you start doing lots of rails and sharp ledges, shin guards.
None of that is overkill in my opinion, but rather just base necessities. Aggressive inline is generally a sport of the youth/young adult. Why? Bones are less dense, quicker reflexes to ‘save’ themselves from worse injury, better energy reserves, etc etc.
FWIW
All great points. I did (quickly) get a pair of padded shorts and use my motorcycle elbow pads now at every session in addition to helmet, knee pads and wrist guards. My level of "aggressiveness" will always be well below that of younger skaters for the very reasons you mentioned, but it has given me the motivation to start some mobility/agility training to try and improve those. A lifetime of running and cycling (and sitting at a desk), though great aerobically, has left me sorely lacking in those areas. I'll never be 30, or 42, again but can hopefully make some slow and safe progress. I really enjoy the energy of the young skaters (almost all skateboard) at the local parks, and the time with my son is priceless.
@@theaverageoldguy glad to hear these points, esp time with son. Complete empathy as I wouldn’t trade time at the parkour gym or climbing gym with kids for anything; even if I’m just lightly moving with them. Cheers!
Awesome to see you having fun on blades! Great work going fakie (backwards) so early into learning. When you go backwards it’s super important to turn your head/shoulders/hips so you look where you are going! The main thing I say to anyone learning is bend your knees, bend your knees and oh yeah, bend your knees! There’s a huge amount of squatting involved and a low centre of gravity will drastically reduce injury when falling. If you watch someone like Franky Morales and see what the super squat style is all about!
Great advice. Several viewers have said that as well and its funny that I feel like I am really bending my knees, then when I see the video, its totally different looking. Same with looking backwards, I have lost so much thoracic spine mobility that twisting is tough, but I am working on that with some mobility exercises. I hope to get a video up soon on that to help other older adults who may not have realized how much mobility they have lost.
@@theaverageoldguy it’s not bad at all you are doing great. But there is a sort of brain re-wiring that takes time so when you feel afraid or panic, rather than stiffen up you relax instead. That sounds like a great video. Sitting in a deep squat is super helpful to loosen hips, and strengthen ankles/knees etc.
@@HJJallday You are so right about the brain re-wiring. I whitewater kayaked for many years and the surest way to flip in a rapid was to panic and stiffen up. I still remember vividly the exact place I was when it finally clicked, and my kayaking ability (and fun) began an exponential improvement from that moment. I am getting much more comfortable on the skates as time passes, and hopefully the same thing will happen.
This is awesome, I’m 40 and just starting out myself . Look forward to more videos on your progress.
I want to learn so bad!!!! I thought I was to old and I'm only 29!!!! Thanks for the inspo!!!! I can't wait for you to be able to do the sickest tricks because I know you will!!!!
I'm 26 and started a month ago, its been great fun just skating around my neighborhood!
I have pretty good balance but only took me a few hours to get rolling and having a great time
update us if you get into inline skating!
I got back into it at 35 and I thought the same thing; I wish I had gotten back into it at 29, hope you haven't let it stop you!
Greatest video from a small RUclips channel I have ever seen, bro U deserve 1000000 subs instantly
Nothing but respect for you, keep it up its a very enjoyable sport
Hell yeah dude, I just found your video. I hope you keep at it, hyped to see!
Thanks! I have made some good progress over the months and am much more comfortable on the skates. My son is light years ahead of me at this point, but once I gave up on trying to keep pace with him and go at my own speed, it has been great!
Hey man this is great you've got the right idea just having fun with your son while entertaining personal challenges only thing I would say is upgrade wheels and bearings will make a world of difference those boots will do fine for a while so just get some quality wheels and bearings and enjoy man and the fact that your doing it together w your son is beautiful man God bless you guys
That's a great suggestion. I have changed the skates and put some small anti rocker wheels on the middle 2 axles and that has helped my stability dramatically, especially skating backwards, but now I feel like I am skating in molasses sometimes.
Jesus this has Been one of my favs. I love the beginning feedback as to what will be watching and I just enjoy watching you two practice and spend time together! I was never able to do anything like this my dad and it just warms my heat.
It has been a great way to spend time together and have fun. We have also made a lot of friends at the local skatepark and always look forward to going.
This is amazing. I want to keep seeing the progress you both make. Instant subscribe right here.
if you're only doing it a month you're doing very well. Ive been skating my entire life. better budget skates, will be more solid, and could be more comfortable. But make the time investment before you pick those up. Id suggest skating enough to require new wheels. going to the skate park and learning ramps is going to consist of a ton of falling. growing up they said that the only sport you'd be taking more bumps in was boxing. It'll make a young person tough. Id suggest parking lots and paved bike paths for exercise and to understand balance and gain strength and confidence. going backwards is easy when you come from a hockey background, I think its because of the way you hold your stick to the ground and where you place your attention. low center of balance is key with a lot of the stuff you're trying to do on those things. you look great for 62 I hope you stay with it and keep having fun with your son.
I grew up skateboarding, so I know all about the bumps. I will say it was not that much less painful when I was young, but the effects didn't last as long!
@@theaverageoldguy yeah I heard that. I skated off skateboarding back in the day, but I had years of hockey background, so when I eventually tried on a friends aggressive skates I traded and couldn't stop for years. It's still my favorite. My favorite thing about rolling over a board was the fact that we are more rare than skateboarders and everyone is really friendly because of that.
Awesome job, man. I would have loved if my dad joined me when he took me to the parks. Welcome to the community.
Im in my mid 30s I simply cant get into aggressive skating because serious injury would put me out of work for too long…. But i very glad I got back to inline skating, a physical activity still available at ANY age.
You are right about that! My aggressive inline is not so aggressive as I imagined it would be, and I have had a couple of injuries that took me out for a little while, but overall I am still having a blast with it and continuing to improve. The main thing is to find something to keep you active and try and avoid the decline that comes with aging, and it sounds like you nailed that!
You’re a legend. Keep it up 💯
Amazing. Keep it up!! Looking forward to the journey, its inspiring to see your drive.
Great job dropping in!
I suggest start with Rec, then Wizard, then maybe Agg once you've fluid and it's second nature.
Hey your giving me hope to keep on skating with my 52^^
I also think the mobility issue is when being scared to fall. When i learn people to skate, i see how stiff they are trying NOT to fall, but those causes more chances of falling then being relaxed. I noticed this myself when learning myself to ski, i was almost always falling and scared until something clicked, took about 2 hours of slow practice until my brain clicked and I could go down a blue slope at full speed. From begin scared, going down pizza-style, i was doing parallel skiing and braking. Btw I'm +40 :D
You are exactly right, fear always leads to stiffness and lack of flow, and that leads to more falls, or crashes, or flips depending on your sport. Been working hard to get more comfortable on the skates at the parks and am falling less, hopefully that will continue!
Nice job! Maybe this is a mobility thing, like you mentioned, but if you can look over your shoulder while skating backwards by blading your hips and shoulders in the direction you are going, it may help you avoid some falls. It feels awkward at first but helped me a lot
I still exercise regularly to stay in shape. As I grow older, I focus more on cardio and less strength training.
My whole family got into roller skating a few months ago.
Don't back off the strength training too much. Maintaining muscle mass as we age is critical and gets harder and harder as the years go by.
I'm 33 skating regularly for almost a year and i'm still too afraid to try aggressive :) I hope i will be as cool as you at 62 :)
I'm afraid to skate on the streets because my stopping ability is still awful! At almost 63 now, "aggressive" takes on a different meaning, its more about just having fun in the skateparks and progressing at my own pace. My son has gotten light years ahead of me since this first video, but I really enjoy making the progress that I do. As long as you are enjoying your skating, that's all that counts in the long run!
This is actually awesome, I hope when I’m your age I have the courage to try new things like this. Plus great memories for your son, amazing Job
Subscribing so that I know how blade when I’m in my 60s. Keep it up!
AWESOME job, need a good pair of hockey shorts with hip, tail, & thigh pads IF you don't want to waste time healing. Increases confidence on the tuff stuff too...😝🤙
It didn't take me long to figure that out! I got a pair of Bodyprox padded shorts from Amazon and they have helped a lot, as has practice. I fall a little less these days and taking the falls better, so good on both sides.
Getting back into Blading at 42. Subbed to see your progress. 👍
Bout to be 38 and getting my legs legs back used to the blades everyday lol. Keep it uppp
Plenty of good advice already, so I'll just add a little quality-of-life tip: Get rid of that squeeking by put some wax on your skates anywhere there's plastic rubbing on plastic.
Took me two decades before i heard that one!
Definitely going to give that a try! Over time they have become even worse, I'm not sneaking up on anyone that's for sure.
Ur the man I hope I will still rip skate parks at his age well done brother
RESPECT!!!
I can't believe you took all those falls like that at 62 great job
Dope! I started from scratch this year. @42
Awesome! Hopefully your progress is faster and less painful than mine!
@@theaverageoldguy The progress may be faster. But the pains there I promise haha. Love to see what your doing. I also skate with my 16yr old.
Amazing skill for a beginner of any age a true inspiration to anyone wishing to get into skating i look foward to seeing you progress mate good luck hope you keep it up 👍
welcome back to inline skating!
U did better than I would
Super!!!
I admire you. My advice would be to get a teacher. People who started a long time ago and maybe has skated for more than 25 years will make you progress in a much safer way than just trial and error. Good luck!
I would also recommend to go to the gym and strengthen your muscles to keep your joints safe. I sprained my ankle grinding because I remember how to do it but after a very long pause (23 years) my body was not ready for it...
Great advice. I do strength train and have all my life. Strength and endurance are not issues, but my balance and mobility have taken a turn for the worse as I have gotten older, and old injuries are taking their toll as well.
you're doing Great!!! Cant wait to see your progress.
This is so cool!
Inspiration. I hope I’m still aggressive skating at your age . 39 and been skating for 25 years and I’m feeling the pain from it 😅
Amazing. ❤
Great video! Where is this skate park located? Looks fun.
This one is in Thomasville North Carolina. We skate mostly at the Lexington NC one now. This was a great park to learn on and I occasionally still go there to do stuff on those 3 foot ramps, there is nothing that small at our main park.
Practice. Practice. Practice. Remember, OGRE…..Old Guys Rule Everything.
You got that right!
Ok 😊I see we’re u going I would recommend u roces m12 for u good flex an it will bond great to ur feet to give u batter movement
Well done dude. Gift advice: butt pads and thank me later. From a 40yr old to you :)
Yea, didn't take me long to figure that one out! I am doing a better job of staying off my butt, but the pad is invaluable when it does happen.
Stretch before and while your skating learn slalom moves .it will make you beter.
how many have made fun of you for having a bicycle helmet instead of a skateboard helmet?
Enough that I eventually got a skate specific helmet.
