Premier Guitar’s Chris Kies chills with Band of Skulls cofounders Russell Marsden and Emma Richardson to talk gear, the benefit of expert setups, and why their boards are in constant flux thanks to each other.
Guitarist/frontman Russell Marsden’s longtime No. 1 was his first real guitar-a late ’90s Fender Jazzmaster that his parents got him after graduating high school. It has been featured on all four of the band’s albums and used nearly every night since the band formed. The body and neck on the guitar are original but not much else is as he’s swapped out the original bridge for an upgraded Mastery, put on an aftermarket pickguard designed after the aesthetics of a ’59 Jazzmaster, put in custom-wound P-90s by Monty’s Guitars in London, and updated the tailpiece, switches, and knobs because they’ve all busted over the time he’s owned the instrument.
Originally given to her by Fender as a long-term loan, Emma has no plans on giving this FSR Antigua P bass back any time soon. She has typically played with rosewood necks on her basses, but this Antiqua’s maple one has her seeing the lighter wood in a different light as she feels it makes the instrument more lively and viscous.

It's nice when the musicians themselves go through their gear AND they actually know about the equipment! Not to mention it's a great band!
he seems genuine. not at all pretentious like one would imagine. seems like a good candidate for a couple pints and shooting the shit. love his work as well.
After a recent gig of theirs I hung out with these two and basically got the verbal rig rundown. Very knowledgeable gearheads. Such a cool rig, such nice people. Also they put on one hell of a great show.
One of the best bands around these days! GREAT band! Thanks for the RR!
Mentions Ed O'Brien - Mick from That Pedal Show toots the name drop horn...
Good job, never heard of them and now i am i will buy some albums. cool people.
Yess! Thank you! One of my favorite bands
Such a great band. Saw them at HoB in Chicago in 2012. One of the best shows I've seen.
Very happy he mentioned Wildwood Music in Louisville, CO.
Great place!
One of my favorite bands he has such a good sound, knowing Ed Obrien contributed to it too
Matt Gleeson at Montys Guitars will wind pretty much whatever you want. He's a great guy
Fleeing New York!!!
This Super bassman amp sounds awesome, I played thru it a few days ago - big impression.
@16:59 it happened. a pedalboard actually became self-aware and tried to run away. thought we wouldn't notice, eh.
skynet's Judgement Day is here, y'all
Don't say that too loud ... they're listening!
Oh my god this made my day!!!!
Awesome! Band Of Skulls kick ass
I am surprised that you guys still havent done local h. that would be a really cool in depth review
I love of the Rig Rundowns. Id love to see a RR of A Perfect Circle! (I'm sure I'm not the 1st to say that, though)
I didn't mean to open up some wounds, here,
gentlemen.
Same rig as Pete Townshend has used for decades, two Vibro-kings with the 12" extension cabs.
Any idea what strings Russell uses?
The Hot Cake has an internal Guitar/Bass switcher
The name of the microphones inside the Vibro kings?
listen to each and every word
Yesssssss!!!!! I've been waiting for this one!!!
That P bass, wow!
What is a joz mostu?
This was a good one
I can't not see their guitar player as a young David Gilmour. Great job, Chris.
Gotcha!
los amo
yesss!!!!!
Ronnie Wood rocks Vibro Kings on the road these days.
The last thing a Big Muff does is a " Hendrix thing". I don't think it's splitting hairs to differentiate between a Muff and a Fuzz Face..
What else did you learn? Maybe get a better made Muff style fuzz, like the OBN Haunt,or a Jam Red Muck - that dosent break all the time?
These guys write some interesting songs, but I can't help but feel that there's something missing , - like heart.
hmm, a basist that does not change the strings, hmmm how peculiar c:
+Toxic Potato jus saying, good dead bass strings (particularly flat wounds) are sought after. some people will buy them used because they can still last for years and they get a very consistent and specific tone. especially for garage-y psych rock, think tame impala lonerism esque.
