  • The purpose of me requesting they react to songs like these is just to expose them to music they may or may not have heard before, to expand their horizons and to sate my curiosity over whether they will like them or not.
I am responsible for the song choices, what I choose to request so if want to complain about that then that's fair game but if want to complain about Ashtyn or Jon's reaction just remember this is not their channel and by proxy it is very unlikely they will read your comments unless I personally pass the message on next time I speak to them...however I have zero interest in passing on any vindictive, rude or spiteful comments.
They do these for me and I just post many of them here in case other people might also be curious about what they think of these songs too after they send me the videos and I have watched them myself. As mentioned this is not their channel, if you wish to visit their channel it can be found listed below.
Ashtyn & Jon's reaction focused channel:

How Cliff never made it in The US I will never know ! Their loss was our gain. One of the most consistent popular UK singers ever. Still going strong near 80 years old !

Check his wiki page. He had about 8 US top 40 hits, with 3 of them being in the US Top 10. That's not bad in comparison to many other British performers of his ilk.

I find sad that no one here in Italy knows Cliff. There are a lot of very cool songs in his repertoire

Sir Cliff Richard is my favorite singer. He has a channel here on RUclips with most of his recordings on here. He was a massive star worldwide way before the Beatles! He is currently 83 and still performing live. His 1st hit was called Move it, in 1958 ( he was 18), his back up band was the Shadows. He had some hits over here like Carrie, we Don’t Talk Anymore, Devil Woman, etc. He was a major star in the UK, all across Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa and other countries on that continent. His live concerts were fantastic! Some of us in the states know about him and love his music. He also was a huge film star back in the 60’s in the UK & Europe. On top of all that, he is a very nice guy!🇺🇸

This was when Walkman 1st came out! He was 41 when this was done. He is huge world wide…1st started in 1958 at 17 years old 1st hit was Move it! It is still a great listen today! He only had a couple hits in this country because EMI never really promoted him here. He had We don’t talk anymore, Carrie, Devil Woman, Dreaming. But this guy is major huge in the rest of the world. Still is and he over 80 now. His live shows are killer!

Walkman is their correct name. Thanks for the review…I’ve been to between 3-5 of Cliff’s live shows in Melbourne Australia during the 1980’s….his voice was beautiful & indistinguishable live from the recorded versions, plus just a great stage entertainer who spends time speaking to his audience!

@darvinion The Shadows are the Greatest. And they're lovely guys. I love the way Pete Townsend of The Who said: The Shadows were a greater influence than The Beatles in my mind because The Shadows were a working band not pop stars.😀

First of all, great song from Cliff Richard. He’s always been massive in England and although he never had the same level of success in America some early settlers to these shores may remember a couple of hits he had over here, namely ‘Devil Woman’ and ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ in 1976 and 1979 AD respectively.
Secondly, I empathize with your attempt to recollect the names of the various devices used to produce musical sounds in the era of the video. I believe the machinery draped around the ears of the skaters were known as “portable cassette players”. Each cassette player contained a long, thin strip of plastic tape on which as 10 or 12 songs (sometimes more if the tape was very long) could be stored in magnetic form. The sound would then be transferred from the tape through the wires to the ears (hence the term “wired for sound”). Some of your older viewers may even remember times prior to the invention of cassette tapes when the musical sounds would be etched onto circular plastic discs as much as a foot in diameter. These discs would then need to be rotated at very specific speeds on a “turntable” and the sound extracted from them by using a small needle. The needle would transfer the sounds to something called a speaker which you would need to sit or stand next to in order to hear the sounds. The bigger the speakers the louder the sound that came out so as you can imagine in those days the size of your speakers was often regarded as a a measure of one’s status in society. The disc was called a “record”, hence the name of the device containing the turntable and the needle was a “record player”. Early attempts to skate using record players and speakers attached to oneself were universally unsuccessful, hence the impetus to design something more portable. Enter portable cassette players such as the Sony Walkman, etc. Who knows, as the pace of technological change accelerates perhaps one day we’ll be able to skate while someone plays music to us on a telephone connected to our body (with a very long cord, or perhaps no cord at all).

I remember a lot of people in the 80's really liking this song and thinking it was cool. Then sometime in the late 80's it stopped being a cool song and was sorta seen as a joke. Kinda like what 'Ice Ice baby' is today.
People thought it was funny that a 40 year old rich Christian celibate celebrity would be roller skating while listening to music with a walkman. It never got it's cool factor again.
