This game is like a tome of tales or fables. This game is like a ginormous cave system, luminous, with lakes where you see different reflections of yourself. This game is like talking with your friend when everybody else is having fun at a night party under the stars that only you two see. This game is like the very first time that someone whispered in your ear. This game is like playing a piano not to impress, but to share a truth about you that can't be named. This game is like a piece of coal, black like night, but glistening like day. This game is like sharing a self-made recipe for a sandwich that sounds so ridiculous, but in practice is otherwordly delicious. This game is my most favourite game ever.
Good review. I have always loved indie games, so I instantly loved this game, BUT i used to be a devote fundamentalist Christian, and some of the dialog made me think it was going to bash my faith so I put the controller down. But I picked it back up during covid thinking my gripes were petty and I needed to have a more open mind to opposing worldviews. Well, being out of work, alone in my apartment, i finished the game. And for me, the story is just as special as the physics, special game dynamics, music, puzzles, and art style, which are all so excellent, bc the dialog was a very fair "debate" about religion from both perspectives and it helped me to take off the blinders i had with my faith. I cant stress this enough. This quirky small relatively unknown indie game changed the trajectory of my life. I dont know if my life is better now. It is probably both better and worse, but i am forever grateful that i feel closer to the "truth."
You did a great job of selling it, and I appreciate you not downplaying its flaws/quirkiness. I'm generally of the mind that we need more weird games, and that those are my favourite sort of games, but then-yeah, after hearing the great soundtrack, I see the weird character portraits and themes, and it's hard not be a little turned off... I kinda forget how much effort it takes initially to fall in love with weird games, it's good to be reminded of that and not just gloss over it. The things you said about how you didn't end up finishing it on your first playthrough, and how the things you hated became charming... how you would've called it one of the worst platformers ever made and now its one of your favourites-that feels pretty familiar to me as someone who's second favourite game of all time is Rain World lol. Honestly, that's what has me the most excited about the idea of playing this. Well, also the mechanics and exploration looks fun.
This game and rain world do share a lot of similarities, the more I think about it (although the 2 are also very different). Nonlinear exploration, long "empty" sections, lack of permanent upgrades, camera that moves from screen to screen, atmospheric sounds only in some locations and music triggers in others, fast travel that uses a consumable (disorder vs passages), and maybe more
Absolutely love this game. You’re right about the character models but it’s funny, after playing the game for so long I just see them as charming now. Edit: lol, you use “charming” too. It’s such a cozy game
IMO, the word cozy gets thrown around too casually in game talk, but it's kinda the perfect world for Kyntt Underground. There's just something so warm and comforting about this game that I've never gotten anywhere else.
I didnt realise this video only had a bit more than a thousand views! It was in my watch later playlist for a long time and i thought it was something pretty popular with how bright and clear the thumbnail and the title are. Wow. RUclips really hides good stuff and barely shows it sometimes. This game looks pretty unusual at first glance, as it always is with games you havent seen before. But it also looks interesting and the atmosphere seems to be very nice and cozy. I might download it at some point. Thanks for this video :)
I remember playing it on my PS Vita when it was free in PS Plus. I was 11 years old and luckily there werent much games on the Vita, so I gave everything a try. Knytt Underground was so much fun and the way you describe it in the video is exactly the way I felt when I played this game. Such a great experience! I also remember that it was USK 0 or 6 (age control) and they still used words like 'asshole' or 'bitch'. It kinda shocked me, that the age rating was so low here in Germany. They 100% didnt look at the dialogues.
I was wondering if you were going to say anything about this game after how many times you used it's amazing music in some of your Rain World videos. I literally just pulled this game off of Steam looking for other metroidvanias to play. And I saw the art, and said, "Yea, that looks pretty ugly." But what changed it all immedately when I played it is that one of those horrific drawings, the first one that spoke to me was the dev himself. It wasn't beginners forgiveness anymore that made me think it was alright. It was realizing that as poor as it was, it was consistent to the point of really saying it was a passion project the dev wanted to do, and it being like that next to such beautiful backgrounds, music, and atmosphere made my brain think of it more like the old pixel art days of filling in the details yourself, but without the retro feel of dealing with pixels. It feels like self-made mediocre clip art, that somehow throughout the whole game just meshed so well with the weird story it was telling. I also liked the religious versus science approach. It's a last of its kind that doesn't berate the player for standing on one side or the other but instead lets the player decide what to do. You are open to disagree with them on what you think about life, and still learn something from them. I didn't pursue much more than the "true ending" secret, which to be honest, as passed off as it was, it still made me appreciate it. Especially after realizing there's several other secrets I've never found. It's almost like the dev saying "Oh you thought you were going to get a big ending with a carrot on a stick? No, you will find the story yourself. That's why I made it."
Thanks for the video! I'm gonna check out this game! I love this kind of games that are "hidden and underground gems". It's such a mysterious world no one is looking! I know some really good but obscure titles. Do you want a recommendation?
Cilia my beloved
it is actually one of the greatest to ever do it isn't it

@@LimeCultivist haha oh yeah, interesting! knew there were some other things but I couldn't quite put my finger on them.

The game is in my wishlist since the first time I heard the soundtrack from it in your videos
Nice to hear you again btw

Wow, they definitely didn't look into it much before rating it. On steam right now it's rated M just because of the language
Thank you so much for making this video.
