From Day #1 I predicted that she would win first prize. She left a deep mark and was the most memorable contestant in my opinion - she had that "it" "wow" factor that many other players did not. She was also smart with her repertoire selections. I'll never forget her contemporary piece in the semi finals. And her INCREDIBLE Paganini no 5 interpretation unlike anyone Ive ever seen.... And closing with Lalo was a wise decision. So many wise decisions paired with her outstanding skills and deep level of musicality, she DEFINITELY deserved 1st prize!

Nik, I really can’t tell what kind of person you are. Sometimes you say smart things and other times you act like a complete man child. You truly are something else. Your violin playing isn’t bad but you’re def not in the position to be criticizing Simon and Hana (buddy i saw what you said in the livestream and I gotta disagree with you, just because you find technically advance musicians and highly mature selections of repertoire to be boring doesn’t mean that they are, it just means that you’re unintellectual and have a short attention span). I’m sorry but I’m not going to let you say that crap about Simon and Hana because they worked their asses off.

In general, Mozart and even Lalo are more to my taste than Lutoslawski, but I was transfixed by Dueñas' performance of Subito. From her fiery opening, her often staccato performance is a tour de force of technical virtuosity. And despite the fire, she often has an almost relaxed attitude, and seems to be having fun as evidenced by frequent smiles even during dramatic passages such as 3:30-2:30 or so. The fun suffuses her playing, which, while often staccato and dramatic, is never harsh.
She is equally at home playing a Mozart andante, too. In this slower and softer piece, she often projects a calm that enhances the peacefulness of much of this piece. Her performance has a quality of, and inspires, a quite, simple happiness. That quality is inherent in music of Mozart such as this, but it takes truly outstanding musician to bring it out, I find. Her pitch-perfect ending is a gem that leaves a feeling of contentment.
The beginning of her Symphonie Espagnole somehow kept making me think of guitar music, even though there was little pizzicato. While this piece has plenty of excitement, such as around 17:30, it also has soulful moments, such as from 18:38 or so, that set it apart from the other two works.
All three pieces together are compelling combination from a superb musician. 🤩 😍

I saw Lutoslawski conducting works of his in Madrid in 1990 or 91. His Concerto for Orchestra in the second part and a couple of shorter works (Jeux Venetiens and something else) before that. And in April 2024 I saw María Dueñas play the Violin Concerto No.1 by Max Bruch in Oviedo, with Paavo Järvi and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. The moment she started playing I began trembling--it was almost more than I could take. The sheer beauty, perfection and intensity in such a quintessential 19th century work was quite shocking. I had read about her, but I never expected so much from Bruch.
Some day, if I'm lucky, I'll witness her playing the 1st Violin Concerto by Shostakovich.

I would link you to the recital they gave as part of the entertainment between the semi final and final, but the Menuhin Competition have taken it down (today in fact).
Chloe's contribution - which was especially incredible - will be re-posted on the Menuhin Competition's channel tomorrow. (I think Christian's won't be, however, perhaps because of his record contract with Decca.)

Genial. Paganini in a skirt. The world stops for a moment while she plays. Big hugs from Czech Reupublic.
