I saw Lutoslawski conducting works of his in Madrid in 1990 or 91. His Concerto for Orchestra in the second part and a couple of shorter works (Jeux Venetiens and something else) before that. And in April 2024 I saw María Dueñas play the Violin Concerto No.1 by Max Bruch in Oviedo, with Paavo Järvi and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. The moment she started playing I began trembling--it was almost more than I could take. The sheer beauty, perfection and intensity in such a quintessential 19th century work was quite shocking. I had read about her, but I never expected so much from Bruch. Some day, if I'm lucky, I'll witness her playing the 1st Violin Concerto by Shostakovich.
So natural and a beautiful sound control with a lot of warmth and color shades. I love this total surrender to the music. This is what music is all about, communicating with timbres
In general, Mozart and even Lalo are more to my taste than Lutoslawski, but I was transfixed by Dueñas' performance of Subito. From her fiery opening, her often staccato performance is a tour de force of technical virtuosity. And despite the fire, she often has an almost relaxed attitude, and seems to be having fun as evidenced by frequent smiles even during dramatic passages such as 3:30-2:30 or so. The fun suffuses her playing, which, while often staccato and dramatic, is never harsh. She is equally at home playing a Mozart andante, too. In this slower and softer piece, she often projects a calm that enhances the peacefulness of much of this piece. Her performance has a quality of, and inspires, a quite, simple happiness. That quality is inherent in music of Mozart such as this, but it takes truly outstanding musician to bring it out, I find. Her pitch-perfect ending is a gem that leaves a feeling of contentment. The beginning of her Symphonie Espagnole somehow kept making me think of guitar music, even though there was little pizzicato. While this piece has plenty of excitement, such as around 17:30, it also has soulful moments, such as from 18:38 or so, that set it apart from the other two works. All three pieces together are compelling combination from a superb musician. 🤩 😍
