Why are UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak and his wife under pressure over their taxes? - BBC News

- An inquiry is under way into how details of UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak's wife's tax affairs were leaked to the media.
As a "non-dom" UK resident, Akshata Murty has not been required by law to pay UK taxes on her overseas income. However on Friday, Ms Murty announced she will now pay UK taxes on the overseas income she earns.
She owns £700m in shares of the Indian IT giant Infosys - founded by her father - for which she received £11.6m in dividend income last year.
The BBC's Business Editor Simon Jack summarises this week's revelations

Not really. Plenty of sitting representatives around the globe have done the same, and he is perfectly allowed to do so under UK law.
Few points to ponder - The 700 million is inheritance from her father's wealth who is an Indian citizen. She is an Indian married to a British citizen. She pays her taxes in India for the wealth created there on her share holdings. As per the law of the land if she doesnt get that money into the country they cant tax her for it. If she was a regular non dom nobody would have cared but when you are the chancellor's wife I can see why many are not happy with the arrangement. Most rich people around the world park their money in UK properties which earns the UK government generous property tax. The conversation should be around the validity of such laws. Change the law if it is getting misused by the rich to save taxes.
For the wealthy property taxes in the UK are paltry.
Finally a sensible comment

Why should people with more money pay more tax?
The taxation system in this country is already progressive 20% of £20,000 is far less than 20% of £40,000 so why would anyone earning a substantial amount of money be expected to pay even more, they already pay 40% on any earnings above £50,271 and 45% above £150.000. Seems pretty unfair to me.

We have to reform democracy, stop political campaign of millions of money from corporations interest, change their names for public servants give them minimum to medium wage maximum, take only people who's interested in having no private finance and disclosure of how much they make so we have control and keep a watch of corruption, stop with the circus debate on parliament, we vote for the issues we face, stopping misleading the public about right and left wing politics, remove the party system.
We should be able to choose the most smart public servants to work for the country and strengthen it as never before. All the money interest aside. Get the big corporations to pay their fair share of tax, change for better. It has to be a revolution. Attract only people who feel interest for making a better country and governance and put aside money interest, those on money should go into business. It would be like creating a new system of governance.
This thing would be like putting a limit on what government body representatives can earn max so limiting their power and we could turn the wheel round either ways easily when at the same time have more say on the things that affect the country. Those on gov representatives unsatisfied with the system could donate part of their wealth to keep on government if they like, but that would have to be on the watch so not to exceed a certain limit and also their work ethics, not to say the least our vote. It can be and should be fairer to everybody. Democracy is dead the way it is, doesn't serve us the majority and we're approaching more uncertain tension times as never before with climate and wars, we've got to change to survive...
I find the green card the most disturbing aspect. The fact that the second most important job in our government is held by a self-avowed citizen of another country! Doesn't matter which country (America in Sunak's case) - he is evidently not personally invested in the country he is co-governing! This simply would not be allowed in that other country.
Cue the PM himself - not born here, born in America, where the head of state must be a born-citizen, and where the owner of a media corporation must be a citizen (which is why Murdoch took US citizenship.) We allow in Great Britain things which America does not, and I think it's scandalous.
He isn’t a US citizen.
I agree. The green card in the US should have been surrendered when Mr Sunak first presented himself as candidate for the UK Parliament. Whatever be the legal position, this was the right moral position for a person who wished to represent the citizens of UK.
If his wife is still an Indian citizen, (a non-resident Indian-NRI in Indian legalese), she cannot vote in the UK, can she?
Like all taxpayers, politicians too must not evade taxes. Voters go a step further. They distrust politicians who avoid taxes by legal methods like any other taxpayer. David Cameron was rightly criticised for similar behaviour. Akshata Murthy has done the right thing now in offering to pay UK tax on her global income.
Obtaining a green card does not grant you citizenship. It is merely documentation that allows a person to work in the US.

This is actually why non/dual citizen/residents and those with non/dual citizen/resident spouses should NOT be important government officials. Period!
How can he be allowed to continue, not only for his wife’s tax or non tax position but being a green card holder for another country. It's mind-blowing to me that people of unimaginable wealth want to game the system so they can have millions more. There surely must come a point where you've covered all your outgoings (homes, holidays, fancy cars, school fees, staff etc) where you run out of things to spend your money on. And yet these people use every trick in the book to ensure the cash keeps piling up. What a morally bankrupt way of living.
It is called, "Greed".
As people tell me. The rich stay rich because of this.
The Chancellor's wife is now agreeing to pay tax on her income from abroad even though she does not have to according to UK tax laws. Change to tax laws and the rich will all move abroad and taxes will need to be higher on the rest of the country. Get real.
@@malcolmalexander5246 Because she was court exploiting the law. Considering the position her husband is in, they really shouldn't. Your argument holds no weight. The Queen has quite a bit of power yet when Bojo told her they'd make an exception so she could have a proper funeral for her husband she said "No. If everyone else has to suffer, then I don't want special treatment".
They want to pass on as much as possible to their offspring.
legal and fair don’t necessarily equate to the same thing, especially when scrutinizing our elected officials who write the rulebook.

No no no
This is how rich get away by not paying taxes.
she is paying tax but in india.......why would she pay tax in uk if she is an indian? she just lives there because of her husband
All you news outlets knew about this stuff long before we have become aware of it, so why now? I believe this government has to go without a doubt🤬🤬
Hmm
Interesting to see which inquiry into activities surrounding this Govt. reports first:
Sunak,Partygate,Sue Gray,Metropolitan Police,Grenfell……the list goes on….and on…..and on !!!

They don't pay tax in UK, and just enjoy the luxuries.
He is holding Green Card, or American passport, so, he should not be in charge of British finance......
Depends on the law of the land. Green card is a visa not passport. Britain allows dual citizenship.
But you do not automatically become a British citizen when you marry a person from the UK. You need to apply as the spouse of a British citizen. India doesn't allow dual citizenship. So one has to drop Indian citizenship if they get one from another.
Stop being envious.
@@thehawkseye3412 Because India knows you can't be loyal to two countries. Meanwhile UK is getting scammed by these double agents
A more interesting question is how did someone who's more a US citizen than a British one run our country for so long before we realised? And how are there at least two members of the cabinet who are so loosely connected to the UK that they don't feel that they want to pay tax here - and no-one knew until now? The next interesting question that the media can look into, if it can be bothered, is the 'tax status' (and indeed the real nationality) of those bankrolling the ruling party. It's starting to look like the UK is run by the global super wealthy for the global super wealthy.
Britain allows dual citizenship and allows them to be MP. Boris Johanson was citizen of USA too. Rishi only had a visa ( green card is a type of visa which allows one to live and have a job but it's not actual citizenship) and reports say he dropped it. Green card only means double taxation so having dual citizenship unless both countries involved have some treaty about taxation.
I find this drama hypocritical because last year some new zealander youtuber got in trouble over his visa in India. He claimed to have dual citizenship and Indians called him out saying India doesn't allow dual citizenship so he could not have one. Since he was some blond guy, foreigners flocked lecturing how backwards India was not issuing dual citizenship. Now British are acting as if it is a surprise for them.
And did you know that any common wealth citizen living in your country can vote in elections? Imagine that?!
@@krazykirl1129 Well they have the provision as they like to think of them as their subjects. British parliament gave India dominion status not freedom.
Besides, all legally resident foreign nationals can register to vote in UK, it seems. EU nationals were also on the list.
Thought he was born in Southampton, England to parents who emigrated from East Africa, Educated at Winchester and Oxford - after that went to an American University and had a home and worked there ... I believe he is British and very well qualified in the finance field.
Now lets get down to what people are accusing him of doing, and let them prove he has done wrong.
Don't say there was scope for him to have done wrong, prove that he has actually done wrong.
@@pharveyrice The point seems to be not whether he's done anything wrong (he hasn't) - it's the fact that the rules look like they're written specifically for his type. And his type is insulated from the laws and taxes they are responsible for formulating.

Let's be clear. Infosys is an Indian company founded in India. She is an Indian citizen by birth. She is not using some tax haven neither is she getting a new citizenship to flirt around the laws. What she has done is both perfectly legal and ethical.
Not true, she should go live in India if she is Indian citizen. She has been living in Uk for decade and using Indian Citizenship to dodge tax
If its not against the law, why has she been pressured by the media to pay up. He does t need his pay from the public, how about he works for nothing to help this country out.

I get that it’s legal, but optics-wise, it’s just a bad look to be raising taxes on ordinary working families while presiding over the biggest rise in living costs in living memory, saying you have no choice bc the public purse needs more money. Meanwhile, your own household is jumping through hoops to avoid paying into the public purse you so desperately claim needs more money.
Whether it’s right or wrong doesn’t negate the fact that, PR-wise, this just looks bad for the Sunaks. 😬
Exactly. They had a choice, and they chose that which was financially beneficial to them, rather than the country.
The 700 million is inheritance from her father's wealth who is an Indian citizen. She is an Indian married to a British citizen. She pays her taxes in India for the wealth created there on her share holdings. As per the law of the land if she doesn't get that money into the country they cant tax her for it. It looks bad only because it's Britain. They are used to getting money from everyone.

I understand there’s a cost of living crisis but is that really how low the UK has sunk to, effectively asking a non-British citizen to pay taxes on money which she has in her home country.
A US green card holder generally must report and pay tax in the same manner as a United States citizen, . Which means that they must report and pay US fed tax on their world-wide income and file a Form 1040. Regardless as to where in the world they are living. I wonder if the Sunak's paid their US taxes as US resident Green card holders on their world wide income
nobody cares about this issue, only the bbc.
@@chinchin9757 I think the US Internal Revenue Service might take an interest. After all they had multi millions of income possibly undeclared to the US Internal Revenue Service as green card holders
Sunak had dropped his green card already as per some reports. Besides they are after his Indian wife's money and mad that she is a non domicile and her money is earned from her father's Indian company thus taxes might be being paid in India.
@@thehawkseye3412 He kept his green card until very recently, and nothing has been said if his wife has given up her green card or not. Regardless both of them were subject to US fed tax laws during the time they held their green cards....
