We have more information about the Greek, Egyptian and Roman civilizations that's why. Mesopotiamian history is important so it's taught, but since we lack information about the specifics of Mesopotamia compared to the other great civilizations, then it's only natural that it would be pushed to the fringes of notoriety (at least it is in the wider public sphere).

cool but understand that Babylon wasn't inhabited by one people group like the Assyrians with their cities, the Babylonian and neo-Babylonian empires were controlled by two different people groups (amorites controlled the first Babylonian empire, and the Chaldeans the neo-Babylonian empire), with many migrations happening into the city since it's foundation.
i think it is very hard to understand the ancestral history of Babylon, but i think most people inhabiting Iraq before the arabization of the area were a mixture of the inhabitants since the fall of the neo-Babylonian empire, it is also very hard to know how much the arabization of the area effected the ancestry of the already settled people since it was a pretty important center for muslims during the Islamic empire and could have seen more migrations from Persians to Arabs.
      BTW, are you a christian?

When I was in college I learned quite a bit about ancient Babylon, and the documents that archeologists have recovered were a real shock to me. They had most of the kinds of mercantile relationships and laws that we have today, including rental agreements for land, etc. Contracts regarding everything from land-transfers to financial loans, agreements for shared ownership of businesses, even special court-systems to adjudicate commercial and contractual disputes. It was stunning to me how much it sounded like modern commercial documents.

Babylon and Media fell under Persian rule in the 6th century BC (Cyrus the Great).

@@kazimahin790 The Persian conquest only did away with the Assyrians political freedom. As a cultural entity Assyria survived on past both the Arab, Persian and the First part of Mongol rule. The Mongol ruler Hulagu Khan had a Christian wife who belonged to the Assyrian Church of the East. She interceded on behalf of the native population, who were predominantly Christian, sparing them. So the Mongols persecuted Muslims and Jews whereas Christians were relatively spared. Most of the destruction of Mesopotamian heritage happened with the Timurid invasions. The Timurid conquest is responsible for the destruction of cities like Ashur and also the decline in the Assyrian population in Iraq, which until that point were predominantly Assyrian.

Babylon is the same city as Babylon today
It is approximately 90 km south of Baghdad. There are palaces, the Ishtar Gate, the procession street where festivals are held, the Lion of Babylon, the Babylonian theater, the maze, and others.
As for Baghdad, it is the capital of Iraq and has another civilization that differs from Babylon

Assyria and Persia does not exist in western schools even though these 2 civilizations influenced greece and roman empires in many ways and eventualy the west world, two nations which alot of the so called “medieval European” things ,such as the knight you had in medieval Europe, the crowning of kings, the deepest parts of the cultural, majority of the military equipments of medieval Europe ,the administration system the schools and big part of the medieval science, alchemy, astronomy, engineering and art directly come from. Middle East is actually ancient Europe, its part of the western world and western world is part of the Middle East. it’s history of European civilizations. Those who study history surely know this fact.

Indeed, we owe so much respect to the ancient Mesopotamians. Great video.

Throughout my time at school I loved history but had to learn about Mesopotamia and it's predecessors outside of the classroom. Libraries and niche book stores filled that gap. There was little about ancient Egypt and the other major Mediterranean civilizations as well and certainly nothing of equally ancient China. The history I was taught was Euro and America centric.

Doug Reimer Egypt , Mesopotamia, Europe and those who created the U.S. are all the same race of people. Public schools do not teach American history correct anyways. They call a people who are native to Asia “Native Americans” . Talk about dishonesty

Thank you. This was very simple and enlightening. I didn't know my ancestors were Mesopotamians.
