When I was in college I learned quite a bit about ancient Babylon, and the documents that archeologists have recovered were a real shock to me. They had most of the kinds of mercantile relationships and laws that we have today, including rental agreements for land, etc. Contracts regarding everything from land-transfers to financial loans, agreements for shared ownership of businesses, even special court-systems to adjudicate commercial and contractual disputes. Fun fact...it was the Assyrians that named those people in that region...called "Greeks"
@@istevenr it is true that Greeks took many elements from Assyrians but, seriously, the term "Greek" was coined by the Romans. And "Hellene" derives from a Greek mythological figure. Sorry.
@@maria-kastana When the Assyrian empire was at it's height...Rome was a mere spec in the map, nothing but a small town and a village with a few peasants running around. I highly doubt it.
@@istevenr When the Assyrian empire was at its peak, I dont think that the Greeks existed by the name "Greeks" or "Hellenes". The first known Greek civilisations existed much later AFTER the fall of Assyrians. These were in Kyklades and Krete- and by 15th century BC the Achaeans in Peloponnese, mentioned in Hettite texts as "Akhaiwasa" or something. There was no use of the term "Greek" from eastern civilisations. Not even the Greeks called themselves Greeks. Basically we are Hellenes.
@@maria-kastana It seems a bit of a stretch to call the Cycledes or Minoans Greek. Recalling from my study of the Indo-European migrations, Greek speakers first migrated to the Balkans in the 16th century BC. Those previous civilizations knew no Greek...

It was stunning to me how much it sounded like modern commercial documents.

So sad that Mesopotamia perished, I wanted to see the palaces and it's history!!!
It was perished during the time of mongol invasions but sadly people bringing religion into it.
It perished following the Turkic invasions of Mesopotamia. The Turkic ruler Timur the lame is responsible for the destruction of several ancient Mesopotamian cities like Ashur. The native peoples were still a large ethnic group until the 1900s, when the Turkic Ottoman Empire conducted a genocide against the people, killing almost 1.5 million Assyrians. Modern day Assyrians are a minority in Mesopotamia.
@@kazimahin790 It was not the Mongols but the Turkic peoples. Mesopotamia was largely Assyrian at the time of the Mongol invasions. The Mongol leader's wife who belonged to the Assyrian Church interceded on their behalf and thus the Assyrians were spared by the Mongols initially.
@@38-jishjilson89 we are talking about the year of BC. there was no Mesopotamia during 1200th century. For your kind information the Scythians, overthrew the Assyrian Empire and destroyed Nineveh in 612 BC. After the final victory at Carchemish in 605 BC the Medes and Babylonians ruled Assyria. Babylon and Media fell under Persian rule in the 6th century BC (Cyrus the Great).
Then how did you bring turkic here? Last time Iraq (Real Mesopotamia) was totally demolished to the ground by the mongols.
@@kazimahin790 The Persian conquest only did away with the Assyrians political freedom. As a cultural entity Assyria survived on past both the Arab, Persian and the First part of Mongol rule. The Mongol ruler Hulagu Khan had a Christian wife who belonged to the Assyrian Church of the East. She interceded on behalf of the native population, who were predominantly Christian, sparing them. So the Mongols persecuted Muslims and Jews whereas Christians were relatively spared. Most of the destruction of Mesopotamian heritage happened with the Timurid invasions. The Timurid conquest is responsible for the destruction of cities like Ashur and also the decline in the Assyrian population in Iraq, which until that point were predominantly Assyrian.

Can't believe this 4 minute video by nat geo taught me so much more about the mesomatian history that my school ever did in all these years.
Love Ancient Civilizations. With the big ones, we can see how different theirs were from ours. Knowledge and learning were huge: art, architecture, writing, and science which they shared & spread. Ours, well, we chase gold / money and not knowledge.

The first civilization in the world is the civilization of Mesopotamia Iraq. They invented writing during cuneiform, and also the first to invent the wheel, which is the first means of transportation in the world, and those who invented the law through Hammurabi regulations, the first legal list in the world, the first to provide for the rights of women and children, and stipulates the tax system and laws stipulated by obelisk Hamorbi subsequently stipulated in all the heavenly books of the Noble Qur’an, the Bible
Indeed, we owe so much respect to the ancient Mesopotamians. Great video.

Islam did not destroy the Middle East
Politics destroyed the Middle East
Before the US-led war on Iraq
Iraq was a stable, beautiful, safe country
But after the war, everything changed
Politicians used religion to destroy countries
They stole everything in my country iraq.. 💔

@Ibrahim Alloush are you out of your mind? baghdad only fell after the mongols invaded in 1256 ad , only 800 years ago. Baghdad was the capital of the abbasid empire. lmfao. iraq only lost power in the iron age when persia qonquered babylon and from that up until a few centuries later was iraq irrelevent but it came back hard with the abbasids.
Iraq had alot of salt
Lots of salt -> lack of food -> collapse of sumeria
Sorry, Fam but this land will be given back to Yahuasha/Isa chosen the Black Hebrew Israelites. Those descendants who were sold into slavery by the Arabs and Indegiuous African to Europeans and then scattered to the corners continent.

Would be really awesome if there is a video about Harappan civilization, a contemporary of Mesopotamian civilization. And how both had trade relations via sea and land.

I'm convinced Mesopotamia had a lot of answers about our world that have been lost to time.
Thank you. This was very simple and enlightening. I didn't know my ancestors were Mesopotamians.
Africa and Mesopotamia, my 2 favorite places to learn about... it makes me think about Abraham, nimrod and the garden of Eden
And the ancient israelites
Now I'm eager to know more. Thank you NatGeo. ❤️
I'm working on a video about this right now! They seemed to skip over a lot
Throughout my time at school I loved history but had to learn about Mesopotamia and it's predecessors outside of the classroom. Libraries and niche book stores filled that gap. There was little about ancient Egypt and the other major Mediterranean civilizations as well and certainly nothing of equally ancient China. The history I was taught was Euro and America centric.
Doug Reimer Egypt , Mesopotamia, Europe and those who created the U.S. are all the same race of people. Public schools do not teach American history correct anyways. They call a people who are native to Asia “Native Americans” . Talk about dishonesty
I love this video, this gives all the information about Mesopotamia I could ask for. It's great.

*Mesopotamia, and it’s gone now
ThoseDonutGirls “Gone” It’s ruins still remain and it has made the biggest impact on humanity of any other ancient civilizations, it literally set the basis to the Egyptians and many other civilizations. Mesopotamia is the chosen land. Period.
@Sara Sara I want ancient Mesopotamia turn back. Not a Islamic Mesopotamia today. I'm sick and tired or Islam extremism. If you want to turn back the great culture and civilization rebuild your ziggurats and destroy your mosque.

Yes, I remember seeing videos of your hospitals infested with flies.
@Ali bigern Oh, yes, it always come down to that doesn't it? Blame the rest of the world for all of your problems. While you're at it, why don't you also blame the Akkadians, the Hittites, the Medes, the Persians, the Babylonians, the Saracens and the Ottomans. Mesopotamia is just a giant parade ground for all the bad luck in recorded history.
@Ali bigern I'll accept *a little bit of* blame for things that happened in 2003. I won't take credit for things that happened before I was born, like thousands of years ago. It takes a pretty heavy load of low self-esteem to do that.
