    Ok, here's my experience: under most circumstances any directional antenna will outperform any omnidirectional antenna. Most circumstances.
    When a radio signal is refracted from the ionosphere, the polarity changes. When the dual-polarity antennas like the PDL2 and Moonraker came out the instruction manuals advised operators to switch polarities to see which one worked best.
    I have a Penetrator at 25 feet. In the back yard I have a Cushcraft R5 vertical at 10 feet. On ground wave, the Penetrator is at least 2 S-units better than the R5. With skywave signals the height advantage goes away, and although the R5 is a halfwave antenna the higher radiation angle often results in it being stronger than the Penetrator. The Penetrator seems to have a direct line to South Africa, but the R5 does much better to South America. It's higher radiation angle is better able to clear the 1250' hill immediately to the south and west of my 1080' location. The Penetrator does better to Europe...most times. Sometimes the Penetrator will reach into the Middle East, sometimes the R5 runs the table across Europe and Russia.
    The answer? Put up the most aluminum you can and enjoy the ride.

      @@parkerriverrat1 That's a good antenna. Modeled after the 1970s Avanti 5/8, it puts a lot of aluminum into the air. I'm happy with the Penetrator because I don't have to worry about burning up the matching coil but it doesn't seem to work as well going south as the Super Magnum did. When I moved here in 1986 I put up a 30' TV tower and a horizontal 4 element Yagi tuned for 10 meters. Paired with a converted TRC-457 it worked quite well, even at 15 watts.

    Doing it's job and it's great you got it up on a rotator. Always favored "Loop" elements over parasitic (yagi) ones. They are better performers and much quieter. Your 3 element delta loop likely gives you some dbd gain. Your also getting rid of qrm via the backdoor. The silver rod .. Is that the half-wave you got that's made in the UK? Just me, but I thought it and the v58a were both decent performers.

    How does the maco vq3 compare to the v58?

  • @Optimus2179
    @Optimus2179 4 месяца назад

    The vq3 winning is a no brainier vs the vertical if the people your listening to are horizontally polarized.
    If you are listening to someone on a vertically polarized antenna the VQ3 will suffer greatly.
    Better to have both options than only one.
    Your area might be kind of unique because most areas where CB is popular for local chatting, omni-directional verticals are usually the antenna of choice.

    John, you know as well as I do that a beam will beat a omni directional antenna hands down. The signal on the transmit is concentrated in the direction that it is pointed. Also a beam only picks up the radio signal from the direction it is pointed. With a concentrated signal in one direction it increases the gain quite a bit. hope you Barbra, and you son as well as his family have a good Christmas, Miss those old Christmas nights when we used to jump on our Christmas presents showing off and playing with them. When we were all younger and you were living up here with your small engine repair business.

    Hey, long-term viewer here, always enjoy ur vids; HOWEVER, this "A-B" comparison wasn't really a valid one; that is, for a true "vertical vs v-Quad" comparison, u'd have to at least know where the station's located, ir at rmthe very least, k iw their state, so u can turn ur v-Quad in that direction, ti have the most rx gain pointing that direction BEFORE beginning comparing it to the vertical; otherwise, it's really not legit, just randomly choosing stns when ur v-Quad may not even be pointing in that general direction; so please, at first, at least listen long enough to see where someone's located (or their state), turn the antenna THEN compare; at keast that's that's what I do when comparing my 2-ele v-Quad to an IMAX vertical I have at the top of a tall tree; was still an interesting vid but cudda' been more convincing, since we already know that verticals always pick up more noise vs horizontally polarized ones! 73 & HNY! 😃🇺🇸

    Test the beam against one of the 5/8 aluminum ground plane antennas. An Antron type antenna is not the best vertical for the test. I compared one (Antron) to 5/8 GP and the GP was noticeably the winner. When talking locally I sometimes hear a weak signal that the beams, pointed away from the weak signal don't know is there. Of course when I tell them about the weak signal and where it is coming from they can turn that direction and hear it better than me. Beams are good antennas but are not always the best choice, depends on the pocketbook and how much effort you want to invest in maintenance and time spinning them around, GPs suit me best.

      50 years ago, it was common to find a vertical omnidirectional antenna mounted on the chimney, and a beam on a tower at least 30' tall. The vertical was for local people, the beam for shooting skip. Under those conditions, there was no comparison between the two. Back then, the beam gave you the advantage of side and back rejection, and if you mounted the beam horizontal you attenuated the local vertical signals that much more.
